The value of computed tomography (CT) in the assessment of pelvic malignancy is well established. However, the importance of scanning caudad to the symphysis pubis to include the perineum has not been emphasized. The CT anatomy of the perineum in the transverse, coronal, and sagittal planes planes in normal subjects and in cadaver specimens is reviewed, and experience in 22 patients with pelviperineal pathology is reported. Three Parma wallabies (Macropus parma) were inoculated with a herpesvirus recovered from a captive Parma wallaby with fatal naturally-occurring disease. Two intravenously inoculated animals died after 5 days and one animal infected via the conjunctiva and nasal mucosa was killed when moribund at 7 days. An additional two wallabies held in contact with the others became infected; they were killed at 11 days, when one was severely affected and one was mildly affected. All had small vesicles and ulcers of the skin of the upper and lower lips, eyelids, anogenital area and adjacent genital mucosa.

Tampons have been associated with toxic shock syndrome, a newly-recognized disease which attacks women of menstrual age and has caused at least 84 deaths so far. A study of the medical literature since 1933, when tampons were first put on the market, reveals warning of possible dangers as a foreign body, as an irritant, as a carrier of bacteria. Today more health professionals are aware of the dangers of tampon use, but they have not yet applied this knowledge to diseases other than TSS. We believe this should be done. Despite the occurrence of vaginal ulcers, mucosal alterations, and toxic shock syndrome, large numbers of women continue to find vaginal tampons an acceptable and convenient method of menstrual protection. Government agencies and consumer groups are aware of the potential problems associated with tampon use and are actively concerned with surveillance and public education. Tampon manufactures have joined in this effort and continue to seek methods of improving their product and decreasing the risks associated with the use and abuse of vaginal tampons.

Four cases of primary malignant melanoma of the vagina in women aged 23, 44, 51 and 65 years are presented.
