Abdominal wall endometriosis (AWE) is a rare condition that usually develops in a surgical scar resulting from a Caesarean section. While commonly seen in the cutaneous and subcutaneous fat tissue at the Caesarean scar level, its intramuscular localization is quite rare. Its treatment options consist of the excision of the lesion and/or hormonal therapies, although wide surgical excision is the treatment of choice in the literature. Wide surgical excision may create a defect in the abdominal wall and may increase the risk of hernia formation and mesh complications. This case report describes t

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to review patient characteristics and intraoperative findings for excised cases of abdominal wall endometriosis (AWE).
STUDY DESIGN: A 12 year medical record search was performed for cases of excised AWE, and the diagnosis was confirmed on pathological specimen. Descriptive data were collected and analyzed.
RESULTS: Of 65 patients included, the primary clinical presentation was abdominal pain and/or a mass/lump (73.8% and 63.1%, respectively). Most patients had a history of cesarean section (81.5%) but 6 patients (9.2%) had no prior surgery. Time fro

Sex cord tumor with annular tubules (SCTATs) is a relatively rare ovarian neoplasm often having a syndromic association with Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS). Other associations described with this rare neoplasm include adenoma malignum of cervix, Turners syndrome, dysgerminoma, gonadoblastoma, endometrial carcinoma, and endometriosis of fallopian tube. We describe for the first time to the best of our literature search the incidental detection of SCTAT coexisting with an endometriotic cyst of ovary. Meticulous histological scanning and awareness is mandatory for detection of such unusual incident

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Endometriosis is a complex disease, one aspect being the existence of multiple staging systems. The recent Endometriosis Fertility Index (EFI) is compared with other endometriosis infertility staging systems and three new studies assessing the EFI are reported.
RECENT FINDINGS: The revised American Fertility Society classification system has historically been most widely used but does not predict pregnancy rates. The ENZIAN classification system is designed to describe more severe disease as an adjunct to the ASRM system, but does not predict pregnancy rates. The American A

Endosalpingiosis and endometriosis represent ectopic growth of the fallopian tube epithelium and endometrial glands and stroma, respectively. Cutaneous endometriosis is a well-known entity, most often presented on scars after gynecological procedures. Cutaneous endosalpingiosis, however, appears to be a rare condition, with only 5 cases described in medical literature thus far. The authors report an unusual case of a woman with combined inguinal endosalpingiosis and endometriosis occurring in the cutaneous scar at the site of previously placed surgical drain, 10 years after myomectomy had been

Endometriosis is the presence or growth of endometrial tissue outside the uterus, most commonly affecting the ovaries, uterine ligaments and the peritoneum. Cutaneous endometriosis is much rarer, and is mostly found at the sites of surgical scars, such as laparoscopies, hysterectomies and caesarean sections. We present a rare case of scar endometriosis in a 33 year-old women presenting to the plastic surgeon as a possible skin malignancy and review the literature.

Most cutaneous endometriosis develops at the site of an abdominal surgical scar. Spontaneous cutaneous endometriosis is extremely rare. We report a case of spontaneous cutaneous endometriosis in the mons pubis region. A 41-year-old woman presented with a mass in the right mons pubis, causing cyclic pain associated with menses. Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy was performed. The smears contained three cellular components: honeycombed sheets of glandular epithelial cells, fragments of ovoid-to-spindle shaped stromal cells, and background inflammatory cells, including hemosiderin-laden macroph

Cutaneous endometriosis is a rare manifestation of endometriosis, representing 0.5% to 1% of all endometriosis cases. It can be divided into primary and secondary, when appearing spontaneously or after a surgical procedure, when it is mostly found on surgical scar tissue. Some etiologies were proposed, but none of them could entirely explain the appearance of the tumor. Differential diagnosis includes melanoma, metastatic nodule, keloid and pyogenic granuloma. Dermoscopic features are not yet well established, but there are some characteristics that suggest the diagnosis. Treatment is surgical

BACKGROUND Endometriosis is a unique entity described in ample literature as the decidualization of endometrial tissues under the influence of gynecological hormones outside the uterine cavity. The post-surgical presence of ectopic endometrial tissue on the skin is known as abdominal wall endometriosis, cutaneous endometriosis, or scar endometriosis. Iatrogenic implantation of detached endometrial tissues at the incision site is the most widely accepted theory for this rare monad. The unspecific scar endometriosis presentation makes it challenging to diagnose. Moreover, it can easily be confus

A 40-year-old female patient underwent surgery at our hospital for recurrent pneumothorax. A defect on the right diaphragm was diagnosed as ectopic endometriosis. However, air leakage continued 2 days after surgery. Chest computed tomography identified a 5-mm ground glass opacity in the right S3 field, suggestive of lung cancer. Ten days after the initial surgery, she underwent curative surgery for both pneumothorax and the lung tumor. The tumor was diagnosed as bronchioloalveolar carcinoma, but no other endometriosis was identified. The patient has remained well with no recurrence of lung can

Uterocutaneous fistula is a rare complication that may follow cesarean section. Herein is described a rare case of uterocutaneous fistula. The patient, a 28-year-old woman with a history of American Society for Reproductive Medicine stage IV endometriosis (Douglas pouch obliteration), underwent a cesarean section at 25 weeks of gestation (twin pregnancy). Postoperatively, the patient returned to the emergency service because of the appearance of pus through the cesarean section abdominal scar, and was treated for a subcutaneous abscess. Because drainage continued, the presence of a uterocutane

Endometriosis is a disease process characterized by ectopic endometrial tissue. Involvement most commonly occurs in the lower pelvis, outside the uterine cavity, but can occur elsewhere, including the skin. Cutaneous endometriosis is a rare manifestation of this disease, with decidualization occurring in a very small minority of cases, almost always seen in pregnant females. Cutaneous involvement of endometriosis may present a diagnostic problem for the pathologist, particularly in the event of decidualization. Decidualization may mimic a malignancy and as a result may result in unnecessary di

Cutaneous deciduosis represents a rare manifestation of cutaneous endometriosis in which typical endometrial glands and stroma are morphologically and physiologically transformed under hormonal influence. The transformed glands and stroma usually take on the microscopic appearance of uterine decidua but may mimic malignancy. We describe two cases of cutaneous deciduosis that presented in the post-partum period, but biopsies were not performed until a much later date. The first lesion arose on the perineum of a 31-year-old female after vaginal delivery, but a biopsy was not performed until 6 ye

Malignancy arising in association with endometriosis is a rare but well-documented phenomenon that was first described in the literature as early as 1925. Cutaneous endometriosis with subsequent malignant transformation is even more uncommon, and high clinical suspicion is required for diagnosis. The clinical differential diagnosis of these lesions includes a wide variety of entities, ranging from benign cysts to malignancies such as melanoma. We report a case of clear cell adenocarcinoma arising from endometriosis in a cesarean section scar in a 47-year-old woman, and we complete a review of

Endometriosis is defined as the presence of functioning endometrial tissue outside the uterine cavity, and the standard treatment is extensive surgical excision. Cesarean scar endometriosis is a type of cutaneous endometriosis arising on or near a Cesarean section scar. A 44-year-old woman presented with a 9×6 cm sized dark-brown, stony-hard, irregular, lower abdominal mass of four years duration. The patient had a history of two Cesarean deliveries, 14 and 16 years ago. Suspecting endometriosis, we excised the tumor conservatively rather than extensively to prevent incisional hernia consideri

BACKGROUND: A possible and neglected concern in women with endometriosis undergoing IVF is the potential risk of progression of the disease. We set up a prospective study mainly aimed at evaluating the impact of IVF on endometriosis-related symptoms.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Women with surgical or echographic diagnosis of endometriosis and selected for IVF were included. In the month preceding the IVF attempt and at a second evaluation 3-6 months after the cycle, women who did not get pregnant underwent clinical assessment and transvaginal ultrasonography. Each patient was requested to complete

BACKGROUND: Ileocecal endometriosis is a very rare entity, and its diagnosis is usually made during surgery for other endometriosis sites or, rarely, because of direct complications of ileal involvement. This study was designed to analyze perioperative and long-term outcomes after bowel resection for ileocecal endometriosis.
METHODS: All patients who underwent surgery for ileocecal endometriosis between October 2004 and January 2008 were prospectively collected and analyzed.
RESULTS: Thirty-one women (median age, 34 (range, 25-40) years) were identified. Ileocecal endometriosis was diagnosed

INTRODUCTION: Paraneoplastic coagulation disorders associated with benign and malignant gynecological tumors have been reported. However, reports on cutaneous purpural manifestation of paraneoplastic coagulopathy in cases of gynecological tumors are extremely limited.
CASE REPORT: A 40-year-old woman was referred due to generalized ecchymosis 7 years after laparoscopic-assisted myomectomy. Coagulogram was markedly deranged with severe thrombocytopenia. After hematological disorders were excluded, image diagnostic modalities showed multiple intramyometrial heterogeneous mass lesions with exten

INTRODUCTION: Endometriosis is a disease characterized by the presence of endometrial glands and/or stroma outside the uterine cavity. The main location is the ovary, but it has been described in many other extragenital locations, mainly the intestinal wall and the epiplon, but also the lung and the skin.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this report we review the cases of cutaneous endometriosis diagnosed at Fundación Jiménez Díaz in Madrid in the last decade.
RESULTS: In this time period we have seen 376 specimens with endometriosis, 330 from ovarian origin, 11 cases involving the appendix, 3 affe

CASE REPORT: A 26-year-old woman presented with a history of a dark red, asymptomatic, firm, dome-shaped tumor, approximately 2.5 cm in diameter. The nodule had been developing for one year near a scar in the lower abdominal wall. Her past medical history was significant for a caesarean section five years prior to presentation. Histopathological examination revealed numerous glands of various sizes exhibiting small to large lumina, surrounded by a cellular, edematous stroma composed of spindle-shaped cells or round large cells admixed with lymphocytes, plasma cells, and few eosinophils.
