BACKGROUND: Endometriosis is characterized by the presence of an ectopic endometrial tissue. It affects between 1% and 5% of women in reproductive age. Its main clinical symptoms are dysmenorrhoea and infertility. Among women having had abdominal surgery for any gynecological reason, the prevalence of endometriosis is between 15% and 50%.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 15 year-old patient who underwent surgery twice : once for appendicitis two years before and once for acute salpingitis and tubo-ovarian abscesses one year before. Laparotomy was performed by Pfannenstiel incision. The po

A 32-year old patient presented with an asymptomatic, non-specific tumour located at the site of a previous cesarian scar. The tumor had never bled but its size changed and the color and consistency varied coinciding with the menstrual cycle. The dermatopathologic study showed the existence of ectopic endometrial glandular tissue in the whole thickness of the reticular dermis.

Endometriosis is described as the presence of functioning endometrial tissue outside the uterine cavity. Scar endometriosis is a rare disease, and is difficult to diagnose. The symptoms are nonspecific, typically involving abdominal wall pain at the incision site at the time of menstruation. It commonly follows obstetrical and gynecological surgeries. The diagnosis is frequently made only after excision of the diseased tissue. A case report of a patient with a troublesome scar after a caesarian section is presented. Surgical excision led to the diagnosis of scar endometriosis. The pathogenesis

Scar or incisional endometriosis is a rare, often misdiagnosed, pathologic condition of the abdominal wall. Two cases of incisional endometriosis are presented. Both patients presented with atypical cyclic pain and palpable nodules on scars of previous cesarean sections. In both cases, the mass was totally excised, after accurate preoperative evaluation with 2-D ultrasound, power Doppler and MRI. Microscopic examination confirmed the preoperatively presumed diagnosis of cutaneous endometriosis. In cases of suspected scar endometriosis, preoperative diagnostic imaging is valuable in determining

INTRODUCTION: Cutaneous or subcutaneous endometriosis is a rare entity that is an often overlooked because of chronic abdominal pain.
METHODS: We reviewed the ten cases of cutaneous endometriosis that presented to this hospital over a seven-year period.
RESULTS: The mean age of patients at presentation was 36.3 years. All our patients presented with cyclical abdominal pain. There was a considerable delay in the diagnosis and offer of treatment, the mean length of time between onset of symptoms to surgery being 31.7 months (range 1-62 months). The onset was spontaneous in 40 percent of our pa

Umbilical endometriosis has an estimated incidence of 0.5%-1% of all patients with endometrial ectopia. It is a very rare disease, but should be considered on the differential diagnosis of umbilical lesions. We report on a case of spontaneous umbilical endometriosis in a 38-year-old woman, with a dark brown nodule periodically bleeding, associated with severe abdominal pain. There was no history of endometriosis and she had not been pregnant before. Laparoscopic visualization of pelvic cavity showed bilateral ovarian endometrioma (it was removed while sparing the ovaries). Surgical treatment p

Endometriosis is defined as the presence of extra-uterine endometrial tissue. The prevalence rate of umbilical endometriosis ranges from 0.5 to 1.0% of all patients with extragenital endometriosis. In this report, we present a case of primary umbilical endometriosis to highlight the challenges encountered during diagnosis. A nulliparous 39-year-old woman presented to our department with a 2-year history of a tender, painful and non-reducible, firm umbilical mass that enlarged slowly reaching 2 cm in diameter. She had never been pregnant nor had any abdominal surgery. There was no sequential bl

Although malignant degeneration of cutaneous endometriosis is rare at only 0.3-1% in endometriosis surgical scars, diagnosis and management need to be defined. A case of malignant degeneration of perineal endometriosis is reported, with a review of literature. Physiopathology, epidemiological data, diagnostic and therapeutic methods are discussed for malignant degeneration of cutaneous endometriosis. Any scar lesion that evolves in response to the menstrual cycle should be considered endometriosis until proven otherwise, and thus could require surgical resection, with histological analysis. A

BACKGROUND: Seventy-one cases of scar-related and spontaneous endometriosis of the skin and superficial soft tissue were studied, with a focus on atypical features and types of müllerian differentiation. All patients were women, whose ages ranged from 22 to 65 years (median, 32 years).
METHODS: Histological, immunohistochemical, and electronmicroscopic studies were performed. Clinical information was ascertained via a questionnaire solicited by the referring physicians.
RESULTS: All types of metaplastic changes of müllerian epithelium were found, including tubal (61%), oxyphilic (15%), hobna

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous endometriosis is a rare condition.
CASE REPORT: A 37-year-old woman came to our observation 3 years after Cesarean section for a nodule under the scar that became spontaneously painful during menstrual bleeding. Transabdominal ultrasound examination, serum CA125 determination and histopathological analysis of the nodule were performed. Ultrasound revealed the presence of an oval-shaped hypoechogenic neoformation, while the serum CA125 level was slightly increased, and a diagnosis of endometriosis was confirmed by the histopathological analysis of a surgical specimen.

INTRODUCTION: Scar endometriosis develops in and is adjacent to surgical scars at the site of previous abdominal operations. The most frequent clinical presentation of the disease is that of a palpable subcutaneous mass near surgical scars associated with cyclic pain and swelling during menses. Endometriosis of the surgical scar is often referred to the general surgeons because the clinical presentation suggests an incisional hernia or other conditions related to the general surgery. Cyclical symptoms such as pain and swelling, in relation to surgical scars, which worsen at the time of menstru

Endometriosis is a common gynaecological condition; cutaneous endometriosis is a subtype of endometriosis. Although cutaneous endometriosis involving the abdominal wall is not common, preoperative diagnosis of cutaneous endometriosis can be easily mistaken for a suture granuloma, lipoma, abscess, cyst or hernia. We report two common surgical presentations of this gynaecological condition.

Endometriosis outside the pelvis is rare and most cases occur in surgical scars after operations involving the female genital tract. Fistulae involving the uterus are also very rare, usually being the result of postpartum and postoperative complications. In the present report, a case of a 44-year-old patient with an endometriotic uterocutaneous fistula is described. The patient presented 6 years after her fourth cesarean section with a painful nodule on the cesarean scar, which was bleeding during menstruation. The lesion extended to the uterine fundus, connecting the endometrial cavity with t

The present report refers to a case of "primitive" endometriosis of the umbilical scar in a 50-years-old woman who complained of the appearance at the umbilicus of two nodules measuring 7 and 2 mm in diameter. These nodules, which were brownish in colour, were responsible for prickly pain and itching unrelated to the menstrual cycle. Both nodules were excised after a preoperative non-specific diagnosis of granuloma. Pathology findings revealed "cutaneous endometriosis". The authors believe that the appearance of a nodular swelling at the umbilicus of a woman of child-bearing age should lead to

We present three rare cases of intestinal endometriosis. The patients were treated at the Endometriosis Clinic of the 1st Dept. of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the Semmelweis University, Budapest. Their main symptom besides the classic symptoms of endometriosis (dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, pelvic pain) was the catamenial haematochesia--a subacute obstruction which became more intensive in the perimenstrum and needed medical treatment but no surgical intervention. Because of the recurrent complaints, after detailed check-up and biopsy of the obstructing intestinal endometriosis, anterior resecti

Cutaneous and subcutaneous endometriosis occurs most commonly as a secondary process in scars after abdominal or pelvic surgical procedures including hysterectomy, cesarean sections and episiotomy. Simple excision is the recommended management and local recurrence after adequate excision is uncommon. A 32-year-old woman presented with a 5-cm firm tumor on the right perineum. There was cyclical bleeding and fluctuation in size. She was initially treated with subcutaneous goserelin acetate. The lesion decreased in size and was then successfully excised 4 months later.

Cutaneous endometriosis is an infrequent pathology whose etiopathogenesis is still uncertain. A case of cutaneous endometriosis at the surgical scar level following cesarean section is reported. Moreover, the aspects which might facilitate the diagnostic approach and a correct therapeutic management are underlined.
