The authors report 18 cases of a vascular pathology of the kidney or of its excretory system presenting with heavy and recurrent haematuria. In contrast to data in the literature, their series includes a majority of capillary angiomas (8 cases), as against 6 aneurysms, 2 arteriovenous fistulae and 2 peripyelo-ureteric varices. Eight patients have been admitted with gallstone ileus (GSI) to the Herning Central Hospital during the period 1960--1977. All of the patients were subjected to enterolithotomy only. One patient died postoperatively. On follow-up examination 6 months to 11 1/2 years after operation, one patient complained of a recurrence of cholecystitis, but refused operation. Transurethral electroincision of the bladder neck in female patients with neurogenic bladders has not been widely reported. We have performed this operation on 21 patients who have failed to achieve balanced bladder function through other treatment modalities and who have presented with recurrent urinary tract infections, high postvoid residual urine, and evidence of upper urinary tract deterioration. Four cases of H-type tracheoesophageal fistula are reported. The patients all had chronic aspiration from the esophagus. Spontaneous cutaneous fistulae and abscesses of the renal pelvis and ureter have become rare. Six case reports demonstrate their etiology and differential diagnostic problems. If there is no underlying urologic disease, above all no urolithiasis, other causes of fistulae and abscesses should be kept in mind, the most frequent of these being Crohn's disease.

Sinus-tract cultures were compared with cultures of operative specimens from 40 patients with chronic osteomyelitis. Uroradiological examinations on 33 patients subjected to abdomino-perineal resection were analyzed. The most common finding was medial displacement of both ureters, with the right one frequently crossing the midline. Bladder deformity, sometimes severe, was present in all patients. Localized ureteral narrowing due to stricture or recurring neoplasm was found in 30% of the patients examined. Other common complications included retrovesical abscesses, periurethral abscesses, urethral fistulas and strictures, and bladder retention. All these findings were more prominent in men.

Eight cases of annular pancreas treated at the University Hospital of Hamburg between 1964 to 1977 are presented. In adults, the disease follows the pattern of chronic duodenal obstruction being often asymptomatic unless complications such as peptic ulceration, acute pancreatitis or bile duct obstruction occur. The authors report the results of 84 percutaneous transhepatic cholangiographies using a fine needle, describing the technique. Beyond the context of jaundice, failure of or inadequate opravenous cholangiography requires the use of other radiological techniques. By virtue of its simplicity, its usually good tolerance and its results, percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography has a place of choice in these indications. Its value in comparison with other non-surgical methods of direct opacification of the biliary tract is discussed.

Conservative measures were instituted as the primary treatment of 39 consecutive patients with high output fistulas of the gastrointestinal tract and related organs. Nutritional status was maintained by an intravenous feeding regimen, using peripheral vein infusion sites and supplying 60% of the calorie intake by a fat emulsion. Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia is a vascular disorder with stigmata in any part of the body. The most frequently reported sites of internal lesions are the lungs, liver and gastrointestinal tract. When one lesion is observed on chest radiography or on splanchnic angiography there is reason to include other vascular areas in the investigation. A normal angiographic finding does not exclude the presence of telangiectasia.

Rupture of a hydatid cyst into the biliary tract occurs in 5% to 10% of patients with hydatid disease of the liver. The communication between the hydatid cyst cavity and the biliary tree may produce intermittent or progressive obstructive jaundice. The presence of such jaundice complicates the diagnosis since it resembles other biliary disorders such as stone or infection. We treated six patients with hepatic hydatid cysts, four with minute fissures and two with wide ruptures into the biliary tract. The pathophysiologic mechanisms, diagnostic procedures and treatment are discussed.

In the present paper, the use of the combination preparation sulfamoxol/trimethoprim (CN 3123, Nevin [Grünenthal], Supristol [Nordmark]) in urinary tract infections is reported. This preparation was used in 165 patients of both sexes and all ages. The initial dose was 2 tablets followed by a maintenance dose of 1 tablet every 12 hours for a treatment lasting 10 days on the average.
