BACKGROUND: Dermatophyte infections, which are among the most prevalent fungal infections globally, affect skin, hair and nails, accounting for significant morbidity. Epidemiological data on dermatophytosis in the UK are limited. One notable study in 2007 provided insights into the causative agents of dermatophyte infections in the UK; however, no extensive regional analysis has been published since.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to provide a contemporary understanding of the epidemiology and causative agents of dermatophytosis in South-East England.
METHOD: This retrospective labora

Dermatophyte infections are among the most frequent fungal diseases worldwide, and athletes constitute a particularly vulnerable group due to warm, humid microenvironments, occlusive clothing, and repeated skin contact. These conditions promote the transmission of Trichophyton tonsurans, a major pathogen responsible for sport-related dermatophytosis. Here, we describe two cases of infection in athletes from different disciplines, highlighting varied clinical manifestations influenced by sport-specific exposure and individual factors. Both patients presented with erythematous, scaly lesions con

The first cases of Trichophyton tonsurans infection outbreaks were reported in Japan beginning around the turn of the 21th century. Initial reports were of group infections among high school and college combat sports athletes. Gradually, the spread of infection to younger age groups, such as junior high school students, was confirmed. Today, T. tonsurans is considered one of the major causative organisms of tinea corporis and tinea capitis in Japan. The most common clinical manifestations of T. tonsurans infection are tinea corporis and tinea capitis. Tinea corporis can be difficult to disting

Dermatophytosis is a common skin infection worldwide. In recent years, Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. indotineae has rapidly emerged as a leading cause of recalcitrant dermatophytosis. Iran shows high genetic diversity within the T. mentagrophytes complex, suggesting local emergence of new genotypes, yet nationwide data remain limited. We performed a one-year multicentre, hospital-based survey of referred cases (September 2023-September 2024) in nine provinces of Iran to describe the current epidemiology of dermatophytosis and to analyse mutations in the squalene epoxidase (SQLE) gene associ

Background Tinea corporis is a common superficial fungal infection caused by dermatophytes. It typically presents as well-defined, pruritic, annular papules and plaques with central hypopigmentation. The differential diagnosis includes pityriasis rosea, nummular dermatitis, plaque psoriasis, tinea versicolor, granuloma annulare, and discoid lupus. This article compares different presentations of tinea corporis in various skin types as classified by the Fitzpatrick scale. Recognizing varying presentations of tinea in patients of different skin tones will aid in early and appropriate diagnosis a

BACKGROUND: Dermatophytes, primarily Epidermophyton spp., Trichophyton spp., and Microsporum spp., are responsible for superficial cutaneous mycoses, estimated to affect 20-25% of the people worldwide. The rise of antifungal resistance, especially to terbinafine, has made treating dermatophytosis increasingly difficult. This study aims to assess the clinical and mycological characteristics of dermatophytosis cases and evaluate the in vitro susceptibility of dermatophyte isolates to terbinafine and griseofulvin.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 118 samples were studied from patients with clin

Trichophyton rubrum is a well-known causative agent of superficial dermatophytosis that is typically confined to the stratum corneum. However, in rare cases, it can infiltrate the dermis and cause disseminated dermatophytosis, particularly in immunocompromised patients. Here, we report a case of disseminated trichophytosis with vascular invasion that led to the dissemination of the pathogen to distant skin sites. A 51-year-old Japanese woman with a history of tinea corporis three years earlier and systemic lupus erythematosus, treated with long-term methylprednisolone, developed multiple subcu

Chronic and recalcitrant dermatophytosis has become an increasing therapeutic challenge, particularly in India, where widespread antifungal misuse and environmental factors contribute to persistent infections. This study investigated the clinical patterns, antifungal susceptibility, and molecular mechanisms underlying terbinafine resistance in patients with tinea corporis and tinea cruris. A total of 105 clinically diagnosed and KOH-positive patients were enrolled. The majority were male (60%) with a mean age of 34 years and an average disease duration of 13 months. Most cases involved multipl

BACKGROUND: Trichophyton indotineae is an emerging Trichophyton species associated with extensive dermatophytosis frequently demonstrating terbinafine resistance. While early cases were reported in South Asia, T. indotineae has since spread globally, with several cases reported in the United States since 2023. To our knowledge, we describe the first cases reported in Virginia.
CASE SUMMARY: Patients A and B each presented to the dermatology clinic with a diffuse, pruritic rash unresponsive to previous courses of topical and antifungal therapy. Both presentations raised concern for T. indotine

Tinea corporis caused by Trichophyton indotineae infection is a worldwide epidemic and represents a growing challenge, given that many strains of this dermatophyte are resistant to the antifungal drugs (allylamine and azoles) typically used to treat dermatophytosis. Phytochemicals isolated from essential oils are effective alternatives for inhibiting microbial pathogens. In the present study, we performed in vitro susceptibility testing of the phytochemicals citral and thymol against T. indotineae strains, including a multi-drug-resistant isolate. The susceptibility of T. indotineae to citral,

Cutaneous candidiasis typically affects intertriginous areas and may be overlooked when occurring at non-intertriginous sites. We report a 28-year-old otherwise healthy man with a 7-month history of pruritic scaly erythematous lesions on both upper extremities and the upper abdomen. Before presentation, he had used a topical corticosteroid unsupervised for 2 months. The lesions were initially treated as tinea corporis. Direct microscopy showed pseudohyphae and spores, and two consecutive fungal cultures yielded Candida spp., with CHROMagar Candida supporting Candida albicans. The lesions resol
