BACKGROUND: The introduction of second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) over the past 2 decades generated considerable optimism that better antipsychotic treatments for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder were possible. SGAs offer several tolerability benefits over first-generation antipsychotics (FGAs), particularly with respect to extrapyramidal symptoms. However, SGAs can induce serious metabolic dysregulations, especially in drug-naive, first-episode, and child and adolescent populations, with olanzapine and clozapine having the highest propensity to cause these abnormalities. In this conte

PURPOSE: Effective treatment of onychomycosis caused by dermatophytes (i.e. Trichophyton Microsporum and Epidermophyton) requires species identification and long-term systemic treatment. Traditional diagnosis of onychomycosis is based on KOH microscopy and fungal culture which have their own limitations. Molecular diagnostic methods such as real-time PCR offer shorter turnaround time, species identification and higher sensitivity. This study intended to define diagnostic ability of real-time PCR for dermatophyte detection in Indian patients with onychomycosis.
METHODS: Nail samples from 65 cl

Introduction Tinea corporis, or ringworm, is a fungal infection caused by dermatophytes that affects the skin. It is a significant public health concern, particularly in tropical regions like India, due to issues like antifungal resistance and improper use of combination creams. Traditional diagnostic methods, such as potassium hydroxide (KOH) tests and fungal cultures, are reliable but time-consuming and require laboratory access. Dermoscopy, a non-invasive diagnostic tool, offers a faster alternative by revealing distinct patterns in skin infections, including tinea corporis, invisible to th

BACKGROUND: Trichophyton indotineae (T. mentagrophytes genotype VIII) is spreading globally and is often terbinafine resistant. Guidance for diagnosis and treatment remains inconsistent.
METHODS: We performed a four-round modified Delphi study. A steering group developed a literature-informed, 42-item questionnaire on diagnosis and management. Consensus was predefined as ≥70% agreement.
RESULTS: Thirty-four experts were invited; 20 completed rounds 1 and 2 and 19 completed rounds 3 and 4. Consensus was achieved for 34/42 items (80.95%). The panel advised suspecting T. indotineae infection in

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

Dermatologists and other healthcare providers need to be aware of the epidemiology, clinical features, management, and prevention of community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CAMRSA) infection. Currently, infection caused by CAMRSA is considered to represent a worldwide epidemic and infectious skin lesions are a frequent occurrence. Athletes, certain ethnic populations, children, homeless persons, homosexual men, household members of infected people, HIV-infected patients, intravenous drug abusers, military personnel, newborns, pregnant and postpartum women, tattoo recipi

Biofuels and bioenergy production are increasingly being viewed as viable alternatives to conventional energy sources because of their renewable nature and ability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Waste products, lignocellulosic materials, and agricultural residues are some of the feedstocks that can be used to create biofuels, including biodiesel, bioethanol, and biogas. The production of biofuels not only promotes sustainable energy but also addresses environmental problems. This review article explores the challenges posed by dependence on non-sustainable resources and the environmental

Up to one-quarter of the United States population is affected by tinea pedis (athlete's foot). Tinea pedis of the web space (interdigital tinea pedis) is a common clinical presentation causing skin macerations and fissures. A "dermatophytosis complex" (i.e., concomitant bacterial colonization) further complicates treatment. Here, we examined records of 14,429 skin specimens taken from the feet of dermatology and podiatry outpatients over a 4.6-year period; all specimens were subjected to multiplex qPCR diagnosis for the detection of dermatophytes, Candida, Corynebacterium minutissimum, Pseudom

BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot ulcers (DFU), characterized by open sores or wounds primarily occurring on the feet of diabetes patients, are a serious and highly morbid complication of long-standing diabetes, accounting for significant morbidity and mortality. These ulcers develop when diabetes damages both nerves and blood vessels, a combination known as neurovascular complications. Neurovascular disease is a well-established risk factor. While studies have extensively examined risk factors for DFU, few have specifically focused on patients with diabetic neurovascular disease. Therefore, we assess

Eosinophilic cellulitis (Wells' syndrome) is a rare inflammatory dermatosis, characterized by erythematous skin lesions, edema, and eosinophilic infiltration into the dermis. While typically affecting the limbs, it is uncommon for the condition to present as bullae on the feet. Most cases are idiopathic; however, triggering factors may include arthropod bites, certain medications, and viral, bacterial, or parasitic infections. In this case, a 52-year-old woman presented with recurrent pruritic, blistering eruptions on her feet over the past year. The lesions were non-responsive to multiple tre
