The assignment of new therapeutic purposes to drugs, known as drug repositioning, has been an important ally in the search for new antifungal drugs. Statin compounds, which are used systemically as cholesterol-lowering, may also exert direct antifungal effects, since the statins are drugs that act to prevent sterol synthesis in both humans and fungi and for this reason they are drug promising to combat mycoses. We evaluate the in vivo efficacy of an atorvastatin-loaded topic emulgel (0.75%, 1.5%, or 3.0% m/m) in an in vivo experimental model Tinea pedis. The results showed that the cutaneous d

INTRODUCTION: Tinea pedis is a widespread fungal infection that primarily affects the feet, with risk factors including excessive sweating and tight-fitting footwear. Preventive measures, such as maintaining clean and dry feet and wearing sandals in moist environments, are key in preventing its occurrence. Despite its prevalence and preventability, there is limited research on the knowledge and practices related to tinea pedis in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional study was conducted through a validated questionnaire among 696 Jeddah residents utilizing Google Forms that wer

Chronic hyperkeratotic tinea pedis is a treatment-resistant infection. We evaluated the efficacy of a 3-month course of topical 1% luliconazole in 21 hyperkeratotic tinea pedis patients. The diagnosis was confirmed through microscopy and culture. The lesion area was assessed monthly using a software program. Clinical responses were classified into five categories from "cured" to "no change." Among the isolates, one terbinafine-resistant T. rubrum strain was detected. The mean lesion area decreased significantly over 3 months, with an average improvement rate of 94.1% ± 12.7% and a cure rate of

Mycoses (fungal infections) are highly emerging threat to public health globally. Among six million fungal species, less than 1 % is pathogenic and infects peoples. Most of them affecting skin, nail and hair, which are very common diseases known as superficial mycosis. These diseases include superficial candidiasis (vaginal, cutaneous, oropharyngeal), malasseziaspp (seborrhoeic, pityriasis versicolor) and dermatophytosis (ring warm, tinea pedis, tinea capitis). In particular cases, superficial infections may cause invasive infections, whose occurrence is growing partly owing to an escalation i

INTRODUCTION: Kerion celsi is a form of deep inflammatory tinea capitis, presenting with suppurative, tender plaque, often with pustules and purulent drainage. Tinea capitis is believed to be increasing in incidence worldwide. It mostly affects children and is most commonly caused by zoophilic dermatophytes. Globally, the most common transmission route is anthropophilic.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we present a case of a 92-year-old female without associated chronic diseases, who lived alone in urban apartment and developed kerion in addition to having chronic untreated toenail onychomycosis and

Islam is the fastest growing religion in the United States and the world, and the number of Muslim patients who foot and ankle specialists will encounter is expected to increase as a result. Therefore, it is important to understand the Muslim patients' emphasis on modesty to ensure comfort during the patient encounter. The provider should understand the permissibility of animal-derived products, especially as it relates to lower-extremity wound care and surgical products. Specific rituals that are pillars of Islam, such as prayer, fasting in Ramadan, and Hajj pilgrimage, all have direct relati

Onychomycosis is a prevalent and clinically relevant complication among individuals with diabetes. It is associated with an elevated risk of secondary fungal and bacterial infections, foot ulceration, and, in advanced cases, amputation. Factors contributing to the increased prevalence of onychomycosis in this population include age, peripheral vascular disease, poor glycemic control, neuropathy, suboptimal foot hygiene, and nail trauma. While dermatophytes are the most common pathogens, diabetic patients are more prone to mixed infections involving Candida species with varying antifungal susce

Superficial fungal infections of the feet, such as tinea pedis and onychomycosis, are highly prevalent and frequently recurrent, often due to persistent contamination of footwear, textiles, and foot care instruments. Despite growing concern over antifungal resistance, environmental sources of reinfection remain under-recognized in clinical practice. This review critically examines historical and contemporary methods used to sanitize shoes, socks, podiatric tools, and related materials. Evidence from peer-reviewed studies published between 1938 and 2025 was analyzed across multiple disinfection

INTRODUCTION: Tinea pedis is a common disease that affects up to 70% of adults during a lifetime. Most cases are caused by Trichophyton species. Worldwide, terbinafine resistance among dermatophytes is rising, which is concerning as terbinafine is the first-line treatment. Due to concerns regarding potential epidemics, this study was conducted to investigate whether rental climbing and bowling shoes are a source of societal spread.
METHODS: A sampling was conducted on 103 pairs of rental climbing shoes and 102 pairs of bowling shoes across four climbing clubs and four bowling clubs, utilising

Superficial fungal infections (SFIs) remain a common dermatological issue in the pediatric population, with varying prevalence across regions and age groups. This study aimed to assess the epidemiology of SFIs among children and adolescents in northern Poland in the years 2019 to 2024. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 1237 patients under 18 years of age who underwent direct mycological examination and culture, due to suspicion of SFIs. Data were evaluated based on age, gender, infection site, fungal species identified, and place of residence. The prevalence of SFIs in the studied popu

We present a case of human papillomavirus-associated squamous cell carcinoma arising between the ventral toes. A 60-year-old man presented with a 6-year history of a growth between the right fourth and fifth toes that had previously been thought to be secondary to hammertoe deformity. Initial biopsy favored verruca vulgaris with associated fungal hyphae and he was treated accordingly. Subsequent biopsy showed squamous cell carcinoma in situ with positive for high-risk human papillomavirus subtypes 16 and 18. He was successfully treated with Mohs surgery. This is the first published case of hum

Tinea pedis, commonly known as athlete's foot, is a fungal infection caused by dermatophytes, affecting the skin of the feet. It is prevalent in various populations, but military personnel are particularly vulnerable due to their unique environmental and behavioral factors. These include living in close quarters, exposure to humid conditions, and wearing tight, non-breathable footwear for prolonged periods. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to estimate the global prevalence of tinea pedis among military personnel and explore factors contributing to its high occurrence in this popula

Superficial cutaneous infections of the foot caused by dermatophytes (tinea pedis), viruses (plantar warts), and bacteria (pitted keratolysis) are common in adults. Clinical recognition and treatment of these infections are critical to avoid progression to deeper structures. In the primary care setting, tinea pedis and plantar warts are common; pitted keratolysis is less common. Diagnosis of each of these infections is complicated by their variable presentations, especially on different skin tones. Appropriate treatment of each condition can lead to complete resolution. Initial treatment of th
