Toenail onychomycosis causes significant problems in public health and is more common among the elderly and immune-compromised populations. A previous culture-based survey of communal finely ground toenails from the east coast of Australia isolated 125 T. interdigitale but only one T. rubrum. We conducted a nested case-control study assessing congenital ichthyosis associations with cutaneous infections using a large national database. We describe 157 cases of Trichophyton indotineae infection in the United Kingdom, mostly in patients linked to southern Asia. T. indotineae is spreading in the United Kingdom and accounts for 38% of dermatophyte isolates referred to the UK National Mycology Reference Laboratory. Though diagnosing TC is straightforward, treatment has become challenging due to the use of certain medications and lack of follow-up, leading to resistance.
