Prenatal acephate exposure induces uterine proliferative remodeling and PI3K/Akt/mTOR-associated oxidative stress, apoptosis, and autophagy in rats.

Prenatal exposure to organophosphate pesticides has been increasingly associated with long-term reproductive failure; nevertheless, their effects on uterine developmental programming are still little understood. This study examined whether in utero exposure to acephate causes lasting uterine damage in female rat progeny and analyzed the associated molecular processes. Pregnant Wistar rats were administered oral acephate (14 or 28 mg/kg) from gestational days 6 to 21, and uterine tissues from female progeny were analyzed at postnatal day 28. Prenatal exposure to acephate caused significant hist

Changes of the vaginal microenvironment in patients with subinvolution of uterus.

BACKGROUND: Vaginal microecology is normally in a dynamic balance. Vaginal delivery can disrupt this equilibrium, yet limited studies have investigated the correlation between the occurrence of subinvolution of uterus and alterations in the vaginal microbiota. METHODS: Vaginal secretions were collected 42 days postpartum from 30 patients with subinvolution of uterus (Group A) and 30 normal puerperae (Group B). Differences in the microbial composition between the two groups were evaluated via 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Intergroup taxonomic profiles and diversity variations were rigorously asses

Laparoscopic retrieval of a levonorgestrel intrauterine device in a patient presenting with abdominal pain.

Uterine perforation is a potentially serious uncommon complication of intrauterine device (IUD) use. It has an incidence of one in 1000 insertions. It can manifest with abnormal uterine bleeding and pain. The most common site of implantation is the omentum. Risk factors include breastfeeding, <6 months postpartum, lack of experience of the healthcare professional, congenital uterine anomalies and nulliparity. Transvaginal ultrasound scan (USS) is accurate in localisation of the Mirena IUD. If the IUD is not evident within the uterus, an abdominal radiograph should be performed. Laparoscopic su

Mesonephric-Like Adenocarcinoma of the Endometrium: A Rare and Diagnostically Challenging Entity.

Mesonephric-like adenocarcinoma (MLA) is a recently recognized and rare entity. It is a morphologically distinctive carcinoma of the uterine corpus, estimated to account for approximately 1% of endometrial malignancies. Its diagnosis is particularly challenging owing to morphological and immunophenotypic overlap with cervical mesonephric adenocarcinoma and other endometrial carcinoma subtypes. Accurate identification has significant clinical implications given its association with aggressive behavior. We report the case of a 62-year-old postmenopausal woman who presented with a two-day history

Life-threatening ovarian apoplexy unmasking a rare congenital triad: Unicornuate uterus, pelvic renal ectopia, and ovarian maldescent.

Ovarian apoplexy is a rare but potentially life-threatening gynecologic emergency characterized by acute ovarian hemorrhage and hemoperitoneum. We report the case of an 18-year-old nulligravida who presented with sudden worsening lower abdominal pain and was initially found on imaging to have a hemorrhagic left ovarian cyst, hemoperitoneum, and an incidental right pelvic ectopic kidney. Shortly after admission, she developed hemorrhagic shock with a significant drop in hemoglobin, necessitating emergency laparoscopy. Intraoperatively, approximately 1.5 L of hemoperitoneum was evacuated, and a

Pregnancy after Tompkins metroplasty for Robert's uterus.

Two patients of early adolescence age presented with medically resistant primary dysmenorrhoea. Imaging (MRI scan) confirmed an asymmetric uterine septum with a unilaterally obstructed horn with haematometra. Laparotomy and Tompkins metroplasty was performed to unify the uterine cavity in each case, a technique not used for this condition before. Dysmenorrhoea resolved postoperatively. One patient got pregnant spontaneously 3.5 years later and was delivered by emergency caesarean section at 36 weeks of gestation. There are five reported cases of pregnancy after treatment for a Robert's uterus,

Prioritising gynaecological care in post-haematopoietic stem cell transplant patients.

An adolescent girl with acute myeloid leukaemia underwent chemotherapy followed by haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Post-HSCT, she developed oral chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGvHD), which was successfully treated. Twenty months later, she was referred to the gynaecology department for evaluation of secondary amenorrhoea. Hormonal assessment led to a diagnosis of primary ovarian insufficiency due to chemotherapy. She was prescribed hormone replacement therapy (HRT), but the absence of withdrawal bleeding prompted vaginal examinations, which revealed vaginal adhesions. A s

Isthmic uterine lesions: a comprehensive pictorial review of MRI features and management strategies.

The uterine isthmus, the narrowest portion of the uterus, plays an essential role in female reproductive health and can be the site of several gynecological pathologies. Due to its strategic location, lesions in this region have unique characteristics and can lead to a wide variety of symptoms and diagnostic challenges. Diagnosis is usually made through imaging tests, such as ultrasound (US) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), with appropriate treatment depending on the precise identification of the type of lesion and evaluation of factors such as size, location, and risk of malignancy.
