Epidemiological characteristics of anthropophilic and zoophilic dermatophytosis: a 40-year retrospective prevalence study.

Dermatophytosis is commonly caused by anthropophilic or zoophilic fungi. Although factors related to the disease onset have been identified, it is unclear whether these factors influence disease prevalence differently depending on the fungus's ecological niche. Our study aimed to determine the epidemiological characteristics of dermatophytosis caused by anthropophilic versus zoophilic agents. We conducted a retrospective descriptive study (1976-2015) including confirmed cases of dermatophytosis diagnosed by positive mycological cultures in patients treated at the Institute of Tropical Medicine

In silico insights into shared molecular mechanisms and drug repurposing for non‑small cell lung cancer and tuberculosis.

UNLABELLED: Universal trauma-informed screening is increasingly recommended across pediatric settings, yet it remains unclear which forms of adversity most accurately and equitably identify youth at risk for psychopathology. In response, the current study tested whether defining maltreatment by cumulative quality (i.e., number of subtypes) versus cumulative frequency (i.e., number of experiences regardless of subtypes), as well as potential differences within each subtype, yielded more accurate and fair predictions of trauma-related psychological distress. Participants included 839 adolescents

Tinea Corporis and Tinea Pedis Can Masquerade As Other Cutaneous Conditions in Decedents: Forensic Dermatology of Dermatophyte Infections.

Decedents can have lesions of their skin, mucosa, hair, or nails that may be related to their cause of death; alternatively, these lesions may be coincidentally present and not have associated forensic implications. Superficial fungal infection of the skin, such as tinea corporis and tinea pedis, can mimic other cutaneous conditions, including diseases, neoplasms, or infection. Two decedents had superficial fungal infections that mimicked other conditions, and the cutaneous presentation of their dermatophyte infection was selected to be reported based on their illustrative value. Dermatophyte

Foot mycoses - treatment with over-the-counter preparations based on clinical recommendations.

Tinea pedis (athlete's foot) is a superficial fungal skin infection caused by dermatophytes, most commonly the anthropophilic dermatophyte Trichophyton rubrum. Clinically, it is characterized mainly by scaling, erythema, and fissure formation, and it may present in three primary forms: interdigital, plantar, and vesiculobullous. The infection is often accompanied by mild pruritus; when fissures develop, burning and pain may also occur. Maceration, fissures, and desquamation of the stratum corneum in the interdigital spaces may serve as entry points for β-haemolytic streptococci, thereby increa

Atomoxetine (Strattera(R)) is a selective norepinephrine (noradrenaline) reuptake inhibitor that is not classified as a stimulant, and is indicated for use in patients with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Atomoxetine is effective and generally well tolerated. It is significantly more effective than placebo and standard current therapy and does not differ significantly from or is noninferior to immediate-release methylphenidate; however, it is significantly less effective than the extended-release methylphenidate formulation OROS(R) methylphenidate (hereafter referred to as osm

Mechanism of activation of an ancestral TEC kinase by PIP3.

BACKGROUND: The introduction of second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) over the past 2 decades generated considerable optimism that better antipsychotic treatments for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder were possible. SGAs offer several tolerability benefits over first-generation antipsychotics (FGAs), particularly with respect to extrapyramidal symptoms. However, SGAs can induce serious metabolic dysregulations, especially in drug-naive, first-episode, and child and adolescent populations, with olanzapine and clozapine having the highest propensity to cause these abnormalities. In this conte

A review of biofuels and bioenergy production as a sustainable alternative: opportunities, challenges and future perspectives.

Biofuels and bioenergy production are increasingly being viewed as viable alternatives to conventional energy sources because of their renewable nature and ability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Waste products, lignocellulosic materials, and agricultural residues are some of the feedstocks that can be used to create biofuels, including biodiesel, bioethanol, and biogas. The production of biofuels not only promotes sustainable energy but also addresses environmental problems. This review article explores the challenges posed by dependence on non-sustainable resources and the environmental

Analysis of risk factors for foot ulcers in diabetes patients with neurovascular complications.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot ulcers (DFU), characterized by open sores or wounds primarily occurring on the feet of diabetes patients, are a serious and highly morbid complication of long-standing diabetes, accounting for significant morbidity and mortality. These ulcers develop when diabetes damages both nerves and blood vessels, a combination known as neurovascular complications. Neurovascular disease is a well-established risk factor. While studies have extensively examined risk factors for DFU, few have specifically focused on patients with diabetic neurovascular disease. Therefore, we assess

Breaking the Blister: A Case Report of Bullous Wells' Syndrome Resolved with Oral Terbinafine.

Eosinophilic cellulitis (Wells' syndrome) is a rare inflammatory dermatosis, characterized by erythematous skin lesions, edema, and eosinophilic infiltration into the dermis. While typically affecting the limbs, it is uncommon for the condition to present as bullae on the feet. Most cases are idiopathic; however, triggering factors may include arthropod bites, certain medications, and viral, bacterial, or parasitic infections. In this case, a 52-year-old woman presented with recurrent pruritic, blistering eruptions on her feet over the past year. The lesions were non-responsive to multiple tre
