We report a case of Scedosporium boydii (S. boydii)-induced cutaneous infection combined with generalized tinea corporis in a male patient with a long history of heavy alcohol consumption. The clinical presentation, diagnostic findings, treatment course, and outcome are described, together with a review of the relevant literature. A 63-year-old man presented with a 3-week history of generalized erythematous papules, plaques, scaling, and pain. The diagnosis was established through skin biopsy and mycological examination. Following systemic azole therapy, topical antifungal treatment, and suppo

A unique region of human parvovirus B19 virus‑VP1 (B19V‑VP1u) has been linked to a variety of cardiac disorders. However, the precise role of B19V‑VP1u in inducing cardiac injury remains unknown. The present study investigated the effects of B19V‑VP1u and different regions of B19V‑VP1u, including B19V‑VP1uA (residues 1‑60), B19V‑VP1uB (residues 61‑129), B19V‑VP1uC (residues 130‑195) and B19V‑VP1uD (residues 196‑227), on inducing cardiac injury in naïve mice by zymography, immunoblotting, H&E staining and cytokine immunoassay. Tinea corporis and tinea cruris are common dermatophyte infections of increasing public health concern, yet national US data are limited. We estimated incidence, risk factors, and diagnostic and treatment practices among a large Medicaid-insured outpatient cohort. Among ∼6 800 000 enrollees, 54 108 were diagnosed with tinea corporis (79.1/10 000 person-years) and 8386 with tinea cruris (12.2/10 000 person-years). Tinea corporis primarily affected young children and Black patients, while tinea cruris was prevalent among middle-aged men. Overall, <10% received diagnostic testing, and 7%-10% were

BACKGROUND: Dermatophytosis is a fungal skin infection most commonly caused by members of the genera Trichophyton, Microsporum, and Epidermophyton, though there are 7 genera currently described including Arthroderma, Nannizzia, Paraphyton and Lophophyton. These filamentous fungi survive in the stratum corneum of the hair, skin, or nails of their host by metabolizing keratin. Dermatophyte skin infections can be acquired from direct contact with the skin of infected individuals or animals, fomite transmission, contaminated soil, or autoinfection from other infected body sites. These fungal skin

BACKGROUND: Dermatophyte infections, which are among the most prevalent fungal infections globally, affect skin, hair and nails, accounting for significant morbidity. Epidemiological data on dermatophytosis in the UK are limited. One notable study in 2007 provided insights into the causative agents of dermatophyte infections in the UK; however, no extensive regional analysis has been published since.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to provide a contemporary understanding of the epidemiology and causative agents of dermatophytosis in South-East England.
METHOD: This retrospective labora

Dermatophyte infections are among the most frequent fungal diseases worldwide, and athletes constitute a particularly vulnerable group due to warm, humid microenvironments, occlusive clothing, and repeated skin contact. These conditions promote the transmission of Trichophyton tonsurans, a major pathogen responsible for sport-related dermatophytosis. Here, we describe two cases of infection in athletes from different disciplines, highlighting varied clinical manifestations influenced by sport-specific exposure and individual factors. Both patients presented with erythematous, scaly lesions con

The first cases of Trichophyton tonsurans infection outbreaks were reported in Japan beginning around the turn of the 21th century. Initial reports were of group infections among high school and college combat sports athletes. Gradually, the spread of infection to younger age groups, such as junior high school students, was confirmed. Today, T. tonsurans is considered one of the major causative organisms of tinea corporis and tinea capitis in Japan. The most common clinical manifestations of T. tonsurans infection are tinea corporis and tinea capitis. Tinea corporis can be difficult to disting

Dermatophytosis is a common skin infection worldwide. In recent years, Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. indotineae has rapidly emerged as a leading cause of recalcitrant dermatophytosis. Iran shows high genetic diversity within the T. mentagrophytes complex, suggesting local emergence of new genotypes, yet nationwide data remain limited. We performed a one-year multicentre, hospital-based survey of referred cases (September 2023-September 2024) in nine provinces of Iran to describe the current epidemiology of dermatophytosis and to analyse mutations in the squalene epoxidase (SQLE) gene associ

BACKGROUND: Superficial fungal infections (SFIs) are common dermatological conditions, and both domestic and international reports indicate an increasing incidence in recent years. Their prevalence is strongly affected by climate, temperature, humidity and lifestyle, resulting in significant regional variations.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the epidemiological characteristics of superficial fungal infections in Shanghai, East China, from 2022 to 2024.
METHODS: This single-centre retrospective observational study was conducted at Shanghai Skin Disease Hospital. Clinical specimens, including skin sc

Background Tinea corporis is a common superficial fungal infection caused by dermatophytes. It typically presents as well-defined, pruritic, annular papules and plaques with central hypopigmentation. The differential diagnosis includes pityriasis rosea, nummular dermatitis, plaque psoriasis, tinea versicolor, granuloma annulare, and discoid lupus. This article compares different presentations of tinea corporis in various skin types as classified by the Fitzpatrick scale. Recognizing varying presentations of tinea in patients of different skin tones will aid in early and appropriate diagnosis a

BACKGROUND: Dermatophytes, primarily Epidermophyton spp., Trichophyton spp., and Microsporum spp., are responsible for superficial cutaneous mycoses, estimated to affect 20-25% of the people worldwide. The rise of antifungal resistance, especially to terbinafine, has made treating dermatophytosis increasingly difficult. This study aims to assess the clinical and mycological characteristics of dermatophytosis cases and evaluate the in vitro susceptibility of dermatophyte isolates to terbinafine and griseofulvin.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 118 samples were studied from patients with clin

Trichophyton rubrum is a well-known causative agent of superficial dermatophytosis that is typically confined to the stratum corneum. However, in rare cases, it can infiltrate the dermis and cause disseminated dermatophytosis, particularly in immunocompromised patients. Here, we report a case of disseminated trichophytosis with vascular invasion that led to the dissemination of the pathogen to distant skin sites. A 51-year-old Japanese woman with a history of tinea corporis three years earlier and systemic lupus erythematosus, treated with long-term methylprednisolone, developed multiple subcu
