A Clinico-Mycological and Histopathological Study of Recurrent Dermatophytosis.

BACKGROUND: A few recent studies have shown fungal elements within the hair follicle epithelium, which may act as a reservoir and responsible for recurrent dermatophytosis. OBJECTIVES: To assess the clinical patterns, mycological profile, and histopathology of recurrent dermatophytosis and to determine the prevalence of fungal hyphae in the hair follicle epithelium and other appendages. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and fifty clinically diagnosed cases of recurrent dermatophytic infection were included. Skin samples were taken for direct microscopy, fungal culture, and histopathological

Therapeutic Updates on the Management of Tinea Corporis or Cruris in the Era of Trichophyton Indotineae: Separating Evidence from Hype-A Narrative Review.

The emergence and spread of Trichophyton indotineae (T. indotineae) has led to a sea change in the prescription practices of clinicians regarding the management of dermatophytic skin infections. An infection easily managed with a few weeks of antifungals, tinea corporis or cruris, is now often chronic and recurrent and requires prolonged treatment. Rising resistance to terbinafine, with documented squalene epoxidase (SQLE) gene mutations, and slow clinical response to itraconazole leave clinicians with limited treatment choices. However, in these testing times, it is essential that the tenets

Trichophyton: Changing Nomenclature and Practical Implications.

Trichophyton interdigitale had been regarded as anthropophilic, mainly causing non-inflammatory tinea unguium and tinea pedis. T. mentagrophytes, thought to be zoophilic, were regarded as responsible for more inflammatory dermatophytosis. Indian terbinafine-resistant strains, identified with ribosomal internal transcribed spacer as 'genotype VIII', have recently been termed Trichophyton indotineae based on clinical and mycological features. Some of these have shown selective azole resistance as well. Phenotypic studies have shown some similarities and some differences between Trichophyton indo

Clinical study on antifungal drug resistance among cases of dermatophytosis in patients reporting to multiple tertiary care hospitals.

BACKGROUND: In a tropical country like India, the warm and humid climate plays an important role in the increased incidence of superficial fungal infections. This is a study to identify the causative fungi of dermatophytosis and their in vitro antifungal susceptibility pattern among patients reporting to multiple tertiary care hospitals. METHODS: Skin scrapping, nail clipping, and hair follicles were processed for microscopy, culture, and antifungal susceptibility testing as per standard guidelines. Antifungal susceptibility was performed as per published by Clinical Laboratory Standards Inst

Microsporum gypseum Infection Among Two Related Families With a Zoonotic Aspect: A Prospective Case Series.

Background and purpose The Microsporum gypseum complex is a globally distributed group of geophilic dermatophytes that primarily affect animals but can also rarely cause dermatomycoses in humans. With some regional and occupational variations, tinea corporis is the most prevalent presentation of the infection. The aim of this study was to report on the diagnosis and treatment of dermatophytosis cases among related families, and their pets, from southern Saudi Arabia. Up-to-date information on dermatophytes and dermatophytosis is needed. Methods This is a prospective case series undertaken at t

Association of Kallikrein Related Peptidase 3 (KLK3) gene with dermatophytosis in the UK biobank cohort.

BACKGROUND: In a previous genome wide association study (GWAS) of UK Biobank (UKB) data, we identified one susceptibility locus, tubulointerstitial nephritis antigen (TINAG), with genome wide significance for dermatophytosis. We used genotype calls from file UKB22418. These data are derived directly from Affymetrix DNA microarrays but are missing many genotype calls. Using computationally efficient approaches, UKB has entered imputed genotypes into a second dataset, UKB22828, increasing the number of testable variants by over 100-fold to 96 million variants. METHODS: In the current study, we

[Clinical picture, causative agents and diagnostics of dermatomycoses].

Dermatomycoses affect free skin, hairy scalp, fingernails and toenails. In addition, oral mucosa and genital mucosa can also be affected by fungal infections. The most common pathogens causing skin fungal infections are dermatophytes. They are responsible for, among others, tinea corporis, tinea capitis and onychomycosis (tinea unguium). Mainly anthropophilic dermatophytes are found as pathogens. In the case of tinea capitis-at least in Europe and in German-speaking countries-zoophilic skin fungi must also be considered. Rarely, geophilic dermatophytes can also be isolated. Yeast infections of

Common Skin Infections in High School Athletes and the Role of the School Nurse.

Skin infections in high school athletes pose a risk of transmission to other student athletes. Therefore, it is important to promptly identify possible skin infections and refer them to the healthcare provider for treatment so athletes can return to play quickly and with little interruption to the team. Common skin infections include bacterial infections such as Streptococcus and Staphylococcus, viral infections such as herpes simplex and molluscum contagiosum, and fungal infections such as tinea corporis and capitis. The National Federation of State High School Associations provides guidance

Is there still yaws in Nigeria? Active case search in endemic areas of southern Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Yaws is a disease caused by the bacteria Treponema pallidum subspecies pertenue, which is most commonly seen among children below 15 years. In the twentieth century yaws was endemic in Nigeria but eradication strategies markedly reduced the disease burden. Currently there is minimal data on the ongoing transmission of yaws in Nigeria, despite reports of confirmed yaws cases in neighbouring West African countries. METHODS: We conducted both community and school-based active yaws case search among school-aged children in southeast Nigeria. Children were screened by trained community

Sexually acquired pubogenital dermatophytosis induced by Trichophyton quinckeanum.

Tinea corporis is a common superficial dermatophytosis mostly located at the trunk and extremities. In contrast, tinea of the anogenital region is rare and predominantly occurs in tropical countries. In recent years, a distinctive variant of pubogenital tinea (PT) characterized by deep tissue infiltration and systemic symptoms has been reported, and transmission via sexual contacts has been hypothezised. In the majority of cases, a new genotype of Trichophyton mentagrophytes classified as T. mentagrophytes VII was detected as the causative pathogen. We report a case of PT caused by T. quinckea
