A Microsporum culture isolated in the United States, from a clinical case of tinea corporis, was noted to have microscopic features resembling Rivalier's description of Microsporum (Sabouraudites) praecox (11). This unusual finding prompted further taxonomic studies, the results of which suggest that the new isolate may be either the first strain of Microsporum praecox (or a variety thereof) to be isolated in North America or, possibly, a new species.

The case report presented herein documents the unusual simulaneous occurrence of psoriasis and tinea corporis in a patient and reviews the diagnostic and therapeutic problems that arose during the treatment of these two morphologically similar papulosquamous diseases. The report emphasizes the need for careful re-evaluation of patients who have atypical response to therapy.

Eighty-one patients with dermatomycosis such as tinea corporis, tinea cruris, tinea pedis and pityriasis versicolor were treated with tolciclate 1% cream or miconazole 2% cream. Parasitological cure was obtained in 100% of the patients given tolciclate and in 97.4% of those given miconazole. Patients and investigator considered tolciclate treatment as excellent, respectively, in 76.2% and 73.8% of the cases. The corresponding figures for miconazole were 74.4% and 66.7%. Both treatments were well tolerated.

A multicentre clinical trial with tolciclate was carried out in Italy on 1083 patients suffering from skin mycoses (tinea corporis, tinea cruris, tinea pedis, tinea manuum and pityriasis versicolor). Both preparations (1% cream and lotion) showed a good activity evaluated weekly by clinical examinations and mycological assessments, i.e. culture for tineas and microscopy for pityriasis versicolor. Favourable clinical results ranged from 83% to 97% according to diagnoses. Cultural or microscopic conversions obtained in a mean time of about 2 weeks varied from 70% to 91%. Mycological relapses a m

A 25-year-old black man had generalized tinea corporis for 19 years and had associated subcutaneous mycotic granuloma of the scalp and nape of the neck for 17 years. The dermatophyte from the skin was identified as Microsporum audouinii and responded to oral griseofulvin treatment. Biopsy specimens of the subcutaneous nodules revealed yellowish granules containing masses of irregularly septated hyaline hyphae with frequent vesicles. This fungus differed only in gross colonial morphology from the M. audouinii isolated from the skin and has also been identified as M. audouinii. The subcutaneous

Five cases of tinea corporis in children by Microsporum gypseum are presented. In four of them an endothrix type of parasitism with arthrospores 4 to 8 microns in diameter was observed. In the other case ectothrix and endothrix types of parasitism were seen in different hairs. Endothrix infection of hairs by species of the genus Microsporum has not been clearly demonstrated until the present. Three isolates were identified as Nannazzia gypsea of the "+" mating type.

Tn unexplained, autochthone Trichophyton simii infection in Europe is reported. The patient was a 11-year-old caucasian girl, who had never been out of Germany, nor had contact with anyone from abroad. The girl's only pet, a guinea pig, was proven to be free of dermatophytes. Clinically the infection represented a somewhat persistent circumscribed lesion at the dorsum of one upper arm characterized mainly by small granulomata around hair follicles with only a slight erythematosquamous component.

An epidemiologic study of the dermatophytoses in Salamanca (Spain) from 1973 to 1976 was performed. Dermatophyte species were identified in 224 patients with clinical tinea infections; 31 bovines, 18 rodents and 70 soil samples. The prevalence of Trichophyton verrucosum and Epidermophyton floccosum was strikingly high in relation to other statistics. The most common clinical forms were tinea corporis and tinea cruris. Tinea capitis by anthropophilic species was uncommon.

The commonest dermatophyte infection among the referred dermatology cases in Nigeria is tinea pedis, whereas among the surveyed population of school children, the commonest fungal infection was tinea capitis. It was found that the most ubiquitous causative organism for tinea pedis was E. fluccosum, that for tinea capitis was M. audouinii, while that for tinea corporis was T. soudanese. The source of infection of tinea capitis among the school children was found to be most likely the local barber who serviced the schools in all the villages, and this might explain the high incidence rate of T.

A case of widespread tinea corporis due to Trichophyton ajelloi in a young child is presented. The fungal isolate was unusual in that abundant microconidia were produced together with typical macroconidia. It was pathogenic for the guinea pig.

In 122 patients with fungal diseases studied over a six month period, sixty were seen with dermatophyte infections. Tinea pedis, cruris and ungruium occurred mainly in adult males attending the private hospital and tinea corporis and capitis children attending the University Hospital. The organisms found were Trichophyton rubrum, T. mentagrophytes, T. schonleinii, T. tonsurans, Epidermophyton floccosum and Microsporum canis. Infections with Candida albicans occurred both in the urban and rural population and included case of familial chronic muco-cutaneous candidiasis. Pityriasis versicolor wa

A small epidemic of tinea corporis due to M. gypseum is reported. There were 13 children affected, ages 1-15 years. These children belonged to 6 neighbouring families and all used a common "playground", an empty lot located nearby. Cultures were positive for M. gypseum in the 13 children and the agent was also isolated from 2 soils collected in the playing-ground. Soil isolates were classified as N. gypsea. Clinically, the lesions were circinated and had active borders, they were preferentially located in the trunk. Most children (8/13) had multiple lesions. These and other pertinent aspects a

This paper is devoted to study the magnitude of the skin lesions produced by Trichophyton verrucosum--previously identified--as well as the therapeutic measures taken. For this study were used 45 calves with a skin fungal process identified, by the adequate culture means, as from T. verrucosum. Through the histic study of the skin biopsy were found several lesions due to tinea corporis dermatitis. The use of the drug employed is described. The cure rate obtained with this drug was the following: an 80% cure within 6 days, a 12,5% within 8 days, and a 7,5% within 10 days; no cure was observed i

Trichophytin contact sensitivity was investigated in patients with dermatophytosis by patch testing with highly concentrated purified trichophytin on partially stripped skin. The lack of primary irritant reactions was confirmed on the skin of children. Positive patch tests were noted in 113 of 178 patients (63.5%). However, there was a great difference in the incidence of trichophytin contact sensitivity between cases with different clinical types. The highest frequency of positive patch tests was obtained in patients with the vesiculobullous type of tinea pedis (83.3%). In contrast, a very lo

Unusual cultures of a Microsporum species were isolated from eleven patients who had either tinea capitis or tinea corporis or both. Although the macroconidia produced in the primary cultures resembled those of M. canis, hyphal morphology and colony characteristics were different from any of the more commonly occurring Microsporum species. Careful examination of subcultures showed that the isolates were composed of two species; M. canis and M. distortum, whose relationship remains enigmatic.

In five patients with annular tinea corporis, the tritated thymidine labeling indexes were determined in the rim, center, and intermediate areas of the lesion and compared with normal skin. Labeling indexes at the rim were much higher than those of normal skin (mean, 4.2 times). Labeling indexes elsewhere in the lesion were not significantly different from those of normal skin. Histologic examination showed epidermal thickening in all areas of the lesion as compared with normal skin. This study suggests that there is an increased epidermal turnover at the rim of annular dermatophytosis that ma

For the last 6 years we have been using Miconazole cream in the treatment of tinea and vaginal candidiasis. We think that it is at least as good as the best drugs for this purpose, but consider it difficult to decide about its superiority. Therefore we refrain from describing this part of our experience in detail. We have employed Miconazole "per os" at the daily doses of 24-28 mg./kg. in treating 3 cases of tinea corporis or cruris by "Trichophyton rubrum". Symptoms ceased in 3 days; mycologic examination turned negative in 2 weeks; treatment ended in apparent cure in 3 weeks. We have employe

The efficacy and safety of the broad-spectrum, topically applied antifungal agent clotrimazole were evaluated in two double-blind, multicentric trials. Ten investigators reported on a total of 1,361 cases in which a 1% solution or a 1% cream formulation was compared with its respective vehicle. Clotrimazole was therapeutically effective, as confirmed by mycological cure (negative microscopy and culture) and clinical improvement, in tinea pedis, tinea cruris, tinea corporis, pityriasis versicolor, and cutaneous candidasis. Furthermore, species identification established the efficacy of clotrima
