[Koilocytosis in precancerous conditions and cancer of the vulva].

The incidences of combination of koilocytosis and dysplasias of squamous epithelium of skin-mucous integument of vulva in 120 patients with kraurosis and leukoplakia and 166 patients with carcinoma of external genitalia (at the distance of 3-4 cm from the tumour) are studied. Vulva tissue of 100 women of the same age dying from non-tumourous conditions served as control. The increase of the koilocytosis incidence was observed at various stages of carcinogenesis (slight dysplasia--mild dysplasia--severe dysplasia--preinvasive carcinoma). koilocytes are not found in the invasive carcinoma. It is

Detection of human papillomavirus DNA in genital condylomata in women and their male partners by using in situ hybridization with digoxygenin labeled probes.

Twelve couples (12 women and their male partners) presenting genital warts were investigated in order to evaluate the sexual transmission of human papillomavirus (HPV) in mutual partners and the localization of HPV DNA. Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded biopsy samples of 12 vulvar condylomata, and 12 penile condylomata from male partners were analyzed for the presence of HPV DNA-6, -11, and 16/18 by using in situ hybridization with digoxygenin labeled DNA probes. HPV DNA was identified in 9 women (75%) and in 9 men (75%). HPV-6 was frequently identified, being revealed in 42% of the vulvar spe

Presence of human papillomavirus type 16 genome in bladder carcinoma in situ of a patient with mild immunodeficiency.

Using blot hybridization, we analyzed 10 bladder tumors (1 transitional cell carcinoma in situ, 1 adenocarcinoma, and 8 papillary tumors) for the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA. We detected HPV 16 DNA in a transitional cell carcinoma in situ, whereas no HPV DNA was found in the other bladder tumors. The patient, a 40-year-old female, who harbored HPV 16 DNA in the bladder tumor, had mild immunodeficiency and recently suffered from the bladder tumor, common warts on the right hand, Bowen's disease of the vulva, and severe dysplasia of the vaginal wall. From each of these lesions, we

Human papilloma virus findings in the perimeter of vulvo-vaginal malignancies.

During recent years demonstration of human papilloma virus (HPV) in cancers of the lower female genital tract has led to the assumption, that these viruses may be associated with the pathogenesis of these tumors. This theory is particularly important for patients with intraepithelial lesions of the cervix, vagina and vulva, vulvar dystrophies and condylomata acuminata of the vulva and vagina, which are seen in the dysplasia clinic of our hospital. Using the in situ hybridization technique HPV 6/11 was detected in 13.7% and HPV 16/18 in 21.9% among the patients with mild or moderate dysplasia o

High prevalence of genital tract papillomavirus infection in female adolescents.

To investigate clinical condyloma, abnormal cervical cytologic findings, and evidence of human papillomavirus infections, 89 adolescent girls were examined. Cellular DNAs extracted from exfoliated cervical cells were examined for human papillomavirus genomic sequences by Southern transfer hybridization using 32P-labeled human papillomavirus DNA probes. Human papillomavirus sequences were detected in 12 (13%) young women, abnormal cytologic specimens in 21 (24%), and vulvar condylomas in 12 (13%). The human papillomavirus types identified included HPV-6/11 (four instances), which is known to be

Papillomaviruses in human cancer.

Twelve types of human papillomaviruses (HPV) have been isolated thus far from papillomatous and Bowenoid lesions of the human genital tract. Four type, HPV 6, 11, 16 and 18 are most frequently found. HPV 6 and 11 cause the typical genital warts (condylomata acuminata) and mild dysplastic lesions of the cervix characterized by a high degree of koilocytotic atypia. HPV 16 and 18 are preferentially found in Bowenoid papulosis and Bowen's disease at external genital sites. Moderate and severe cervical dysplasias with little or no koilocytosis appear to be common manifestations of these infections

Immunohistochemical demonstration of papillomavirus antigen in cervical dysplasia and vulvar condyloma.

Biopsies from 30 cases of vulvar condyloma, 460 cases of cervical dysplasia, 30 cases of carcinoma in situ and 75 cases of invasive carcinoma of the cervix were screened for the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) antigen by means of the peroxidase-antiperoxidase method. Positive reaction for HPV was detected in 14 cases of condyloma and 80 cases of dysplasia as a brown intranuclear precipitate in the superficial layer of the epithelium. None of the cases of carcinoma in situ and invasive cancer were positive for HPV. The mean age of the women with HPV-positive dysplasia was significantly l

The relationship between human papillomavirus and lower genital intraepithelial neoplasia in immunosuppressed women.

In a group of 20 immunosuppressed women with lower genital neoplasia, evidence of associated human papillomaviral infection was found in all patients on the basis of the histologic identification of koilocytes in the upper strata of areas of mild or moderate dysplasia. Immunohistochemical study of similar areas disclosed human papilloma structural antigens in the lesions in 60%, while 50% had lesions in which human papilloma virions were detected by the electron microscope. An abnormal immunologic status, indicated by an altered T-helper/T-suppressor ratio, a deficient response to mitogenic st

Condyloma acuminatum in Rochester, Minn, 1950-1978. II. Anaplasias and unfavorable outcomes.

A total of 746 patients residing in Rochester, Minn, received the diagnosis of condyloma acuminatum between 1950 and 1978. Anaplasia was present in six and subsequently developed in 36 patients during follow-up examination in 42 patients (one male and 41 female). One had invasive squamous cell carcinoma (vulva), six had severe dysplasias, 21 had moderate to mild dysplasias, and 14 had carcinomas in situ (CIS), of which 11 were cervical. In the female patients, 37 of the anaplasias were cervical and the other four were vulval or vaginal. The 11 cervical CIS amounted to 3.8 times the expected nu

Definition of precursors in gynecologic cancer.

Epithelial lesions of the vulva with patterns of dysplasia or carcinoma in situ may be associated with underlying invasive squamous cell carcinoma or the presence of dysplasia or carcinoma elsewhere on the vulva. These lesions may regress spontaneously, particularly when they appear as multiple papules in young patients. Two major classifications of precancerous lesions of the cervix are in current usage: 1) mild to severe dysplasia and carcinoma in situ; 2) cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, grades I to III. Both of them imply a more complete understanding of the nature of these changes than

Immunoperoxidase localization of papillomavirus antigens in cervical dysplasia and vulvar condylomas.

Biopsies of 50 cases of cervical dysplasia (46 mild and 4 moderate) and 40 cases of vulvar condyloma acuminata (genital warts) were screened for the presence of papillomavirus antigens by means of a peroxidase-antiperoxidase method having immunospecificity against the genus-specific (common) antigen(s) of the papillomaviruses. With the use of this technique, on formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue, papillomavirus antigens were detected in cells with cytologic and histologic features of wart virus infection (so-called koilocytotic atypia). Cells showing a positive reaction for papillomaviru

Condylomatous lesions of the cervix and vagina. I. Cytologic patterns.

Condylomatous lesions, although readily diagnosed on the vulva, are often missed in the vagina and on the cervix by clinical examination alone. The lesions are, however, quite common and may be misdiagnosed as mild dysplasia by cytology, colposcopy and even tissue examination. Condylomatous lesions are presently diagnosed on cytologic evidence in nearly two per cent of asymptomatic patients screened in our program and followed-up by colposcopy and tissue examination, when indicated. The cytologic presentation of these lesions is quite characteristic. The main features are seen in squamous cell
