Restoration of Ovarian Function after Unilateral Oophorectomy in McCune-Albright Syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: McCune-Albright syndrome (MAS) is characterized by café-au-lait-skin-pigmentation, polyostotic-fibrous-dysplasia and gonadotropin-independent precocious puberty. We report a female patient whose ovarian function normalized following unilateral oophorectomy at young age. CASE: The patient initially presented with peripheral precocious puberty at age 1 and was treated with aromatase inhibitors and selective estrogen receptor modulator until the age of 12 years for pubertal suppression. Cystectomy was performed at age 16 due to persistent right complex ovarian cysts with menorrhagi

Seeking and encountering online information for menstrual health: a qualitative study among adolescent schoolgirls in Gianyar Regency and Denpasar City, Bali, Indonesia.

PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARY: Good quality information helps adolescents with their menstrual health. It supports them in realising their human rights. Many adolescents find information on menstrual health online through websites, social media, or health apps. Online information is increasingly important. But we know little about how adolescents access and use it for menstrual health. We conducted a qualitative study in junior high schools in two districts of Bali, Indonesia. 24 school girls aged 13-15 took part. We wanted to understand how they accessed online information and what they learnt from

Clinical and demographic differences in adenomyosis patients with and without concurrent endometriosis: A retrospective cohort study.

AIM: Adenomyosis and endometriosis are gynecological conditions with overlapping symptoms but distinct pathologies. Both affect the women's reproductive system, but their interrelation and shared clinical pathways are underexplored. This study investigates the co-occurrence and potential shared pathophysiology of these conditions. METHODS: Utilizing a retrospective cohort design, this study analyzed the medical records of female patients diagnosed with adenomyosis at Changsha Hospital for Maternal & Child Health Care from January 2015 to December 2020. We divided these medical records into tw

Analysis of Hirsutism as a Symptom of Ihtibās al-Tamth (Amenorrhea) and its Relation to Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Hirsutism, defined as excessive terminal hair growth in females in a male pattern, is a significant clinical manifestation of increased androgen. Unani scholars such as Hippocrates, Haly Abbas, Rhazes, and Avicenna linked hirsutism with menstrual irregularities, specifically Ihtibās al-Tamth (Amenorrhea). Modern medicine also associates hirsutism with hyperandrogenism, a hallmark of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), among other conditions. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore the understanding of hirsutism from both Unani classical literature and modern medical perspectives, pa

Progestagens for pain symptoms associated with endometriosis.

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis is a hormone-sensitive inflammatory condition affecting between 5% and 10% of reproductive-aged women and an unknown number of gender-diverse individuals. It is often associated with debilitating pelvic pain symptoms. Various formulations of progestagens (e.g. oral, depot, implantable) have been studied as potential treatments for endometriosis because they induce atrophy of endometrial tissue. OBJECTIVES: To determine the benefits and harms of progestagens in the treatment of endometriosis-associated pain symptoms. SEARCH METHODS: We searched CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Emba

The impact of nutrition, exercise, and pharmacotherapy on menstrual health in adolescents with overweight and obesity.

BACKGROUND: Menstrual health is a critical marker of physiological and psychological well-being in adolescents. While undernutrition and energy deficiency are well-known causes of menstrual disruption through hypothalamic hypogonadal suppression, the impact of overweight and obesity on menstrual physiology is an increasing clinical concern as adolescent obesity rates continue to rise globally. OBJECTIVES: This review synthesizes current evidence on how excess adiposity, diet quality, physical activity, insulin sensitizers, and weight-modifying medications affect menstrual health in adolescent

Experiences of menstrual health and amenorrhoea in eating disorder inpatient units in England: a subgroup analysis from a lived experience led, qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Although no longer specified within the diagnostic criteria for anorexia nervosa, the prevalence of menstrual disturbances among patients with eating disorders is well-documented. However, there is limited research examining patient experiences of amenorrhoea and eating disorders, or addressing how the topic is approached by eating disorder services. This article presents a subgroup analysis of a survivor-led qualitative study, which examined experiences of menstrual health in psychiatric inpatient settings. The study's main findings remain relevant to eating disorder services, how

Severe, prolonged primary hypothyroidism causing ovarian hyperstimulation: an adult presentation (Van Wyk-Grumbach syndrome).

The rare endocrine condition known as Van Wyk-Grumbach syndrome (VWGS) is typified by delayed bone age, multicystic ovaries, isosexual precocious puberty and increased, untreated primary hypothyroidism. It typically presents in paediatric patients but can occasionally be missed until adulthood. We report an unusual adult presentation of VWGS in a short-statured woman in her early 20s who presented with menorrhagia-induced severe anaemia, hypothyroid features and multicystic ovaries. Laboratory evaluation revealed markedly elevated thyroid-stimulating hormones, hyperprolactinaemia, elevated oes

The effect of adjuvant mitotane therapy of the adrenocortical carcinoma on the endometrium and its clinical consequences in menstruating women. Literature review and authors' own experiences.

Adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) is a malignant tumour that originates from the adrenal cortex. It is a highly aggressive cancer characterised by a poor prognosis with an annual incidence estimated to be up to 2 cases per million. In the adult population, ACC is diagnosed typically between 40 and 50 years of age, more often in women. Complete surgical resection of the tumour is the primary treatment method for ACC. Unfortunately, despite properly performed adrenalectomy, regional recurrences or distant metastases are detected in up to 90% of the patients. For that reason, adjuvant therapy is rec

The clinical diversity of primary hypothyroidism presenting as a spontaneous ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome.

SUMMARY: Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) usually occurs in patients undergoing assisted reproduction techniques and ovulation induction. Its variant, spontaneous ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, a potentially life-threatening disorder, is uncommon and only a few cases have been reported in association with hypothyroidism. This study analysed five patients with untreated chronic hypothyroidism presenting with multicystic ovaries, isosexual precocious puberty, and delayed bone age; subsequently, the follow-up and regression of ovarian pathology was assessed. Two patients had presented
