Detection of norovirus and sapovirus infection among children with gastroenteritis in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

This report describes norovirus (NoV) and sapovirus (SaV) infections in hospitalized children with acute sporadic gastroenteritis in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Stool specimens collected between December 1999 and November 2000 were examined for NoV and SaV using reverse transcription-PCR and phylogenetic analysis. NoVs were detected in 72 of 448 rotavirus-negative specimens, counted as part of an overall annual detection rate of 5.4% (72 of 1,339 children). This included four NoV genogroup I (GI) strains and 68 NoV GII strains. Only one SaV GI strain was detected in the rotavirus-negative speci

An outbreak of norovirus gastroenteritis on an Israeli military base.

BACKGROUND: Noroviruses (NVs) are a predominant cause of viral gastroenteritis outbreaks, but they are difficult to identify because they cannot be cultivated in cell culture. Therefore, reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assays are widely used in the testing of clinical stool specimens for NV. However, testing of perianal swabs in the context of an outbreak is considered to be an insensitive method for identification of NV using the RT-PCR technique. An outbreak of acute gastroenteritis involving 159 soldiers on a training base of the Israel Defense Force in December 199

An unwanted visitor. Aggressive infection control strategies are needed to shorten the hospital visit of the easily spread norovirus.

Norovirus is the name for a group of Norwalk-like viruses that cause acute gastroenteritis of rapid onset. A recent outbreak at a tertiary care facility in Alberta provided an opportunityfor staff and management to review their outbreak protocol and improve their infection prevention and control procedures. The outbreak caused illness in 32 of 73 exposed patients as well as 42 staff members. None of the infected patients or staff developed complications. The source of norovirus contamination was probably associated with a symptomatic food services staff member serving food cafeteria style in a

Norovirus and sapovirus infections in Thailand.

Stool specimens collected between November 2002 and April 2003 from hospitalized infants with acute gastroenteritis from four distinct geographical regions in Thailand were examined for norovirus (NoV) and sapovirus (SaV) by reverse transcription-PCR and sequence analysis. Of the 80 specimens examined, we identified 11 NoV and 9 SaV single infections, and 3 NoV/SaV mixed infections. The majority of NoV strains (64%) belonged to genogroup II/ genotype 4 (GII/4; Lordsdale cluster). Other NoV strains co-circulating belonged to GII/1, GII/3, GII/6, and one new genotype cluster (GII/New). The major

Field investigations of emergency department syndromic surveillance signals--New York City.

INTRODUCTION: The New York City (NYC) Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) has operated a syndromic surveillance system based on emergency department (ED) chief-complaint data since November 2001. This system was created for early detection of infectious-disease outbreaks, either natural or intentional. However, limited documentation exists regarding epidemiologic field investigations conducted in response to syndromic surveillance signals. OBJECTIVE: DOHMH conducted field investigations to characterize syndromic surveillance signals by person, place, and time and to determine whet

Prevalence and genetic characterization of caliciviruses among children hospitalized for acute gastroenteritis in the United States.

Human calicivirus was the first recognized viral agent causing gastroenteritis in humans. Norovirus (NV) and Sapovirus (SV), two genera within the Caliciviridae family, cause epidemic and endemic acute gastroenteritis in children and adults. The role of these viruses as a cause of sporadic acute gastroenteritis in young children requiring hospitalization is not well established. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and genetic diversity of caliciviruses among children hospitalized with symptoms of acute gastroenteritis. Stool samples were collected over 2 years from symptomatic c

Epidemiology of Norwalk-like virus infections in cattle in The Netherlands.

"Norwalk-like viruses" (NLVs) are the most common cause of acute non-bacterial gastroenteritis in humans. Cattle may be a reservoir of NLVs although never bovine NLVs have been found in humans. To gain more insight into the epidemiology of NLV, infections in cattle in The Netherlands were studied. Individual faecal samples from a large dairy herd and 243 pooled samples from veal calf farms were analysed for NLV by RT-PCR. Calves under 3 months of age in the dairy herd were sampled three to five times with 3-week intervals, whereas dairy cattle were sampled twice with a 2-month interval. In 31.

Norovirus activity--United States, 2002.

During June-December 2002, an increased number of outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) were reported on cruise ships sailing into U.S. ports. In addition, since October 2002, several states have noted an increase in outbreaks of AGE consistent clinically and epidemiologically with norovirus infection, particularly in institutional settings such as nursing homes (CDC, unpublished data, 2002). This report describes recent norovirus activity in two states and New York City (NYC) and data from CDC that indicate the possible emergence of a predominant, circulating norovirus strain.

Major incidents. Norwalk on the wild side.

An outbreak of the Norwalk-like virus at an acute hospital in October affected 147 patients and 200 staff. It was brought under control within two weeks, following the establishment of a team to manage the incident. Some day surgery was cancelled, but no inpatient operations were affected. The public was discouraged from visiting the hospital during the outbreak. Local GPs were co-operative about managing patients with the virus at home. Some doctors came to work with symptoms, despite the trust urging affected staff to stay at home.

[A food poisoning outbreak caused by purple Washington clam contaminated with norovirus (Norwalk-like virus) and hepatitis A virus].

A party of 57 people dined together in a restaurant in Hamamatsu City on December 11, 2001. The next day, 22 of them developed symptoms of acute gastroenteritis, such as diarrhea, vomiting, and fever. Examination of 4 fecal specimens from these patients by ELISA for Norovirus (Norwalk-like virus, NV) detected both genogroup I (GI) and genogroup II (GII) NV in all the 4 specimens. In addition, RT-PCR and real-time PCR methods for NV detected the NV gene. Approximately one month after the outbreak of the food poisoning (acute gastroenteritis) by NV, 4 individuals in the same party developed type

Infantile viral gastroenteritis: on the way to closing the diagnostic gap.

A total of 305 faecal specimens collected from children under the age of 5 who presented with symptoms of acute gastroenteritis either as inpatients at Addenbrooke's Hospital (N = 100) or to General Practitioners in East Anglia (N = 205) during 1999-2001 were tested for the presence of rotavirus, norovirus, sapovirus, enteric adenoviruses (Group F, serotypes 40 and 41), and astrovirus. An aetiologic agent was found in 184 specimens (60.3%). The most commonly found single viral pathogen was rotavirus (27.9%), followed by norovirus (13.4%), enteric adenoviruses (7.9%), astrovirus (2.3%), and sap

Broadly reactive and highly sensitive assay for Norwalk-like viruses based on real-time quantitative reverse transcription-PCR.

We have developed an assay for the detection of Norwalk-like viruses (NLVs) based on reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) that is highly sensitive to a broad range of NLVs. We isolated virus from 71 NLV-positive stool specimens from 37 outbreaks of nonbacterial acute gastroenteritis and sequenced the open reading frame 1 (ORF1)-ORF2 junction region, the most conserved region of the NLV genome. The data were subjected to multiple-sequence alignment analysis and similarity plot analysis. We used the most conserved sequences that react with diverse NLVs to design primers and TaqMan probes for the r

Molecular epidemiology of Norwalk-like virus (NLV) outbreaks occurring in Kyushu Japan between 1988 and 1993.

In nine outbreaks that occurred in the Kyushu district between 1988 and 1993, we determined the nucleotide sequences of Norwalk-like virus (NLV) gene fragments amplified by RT-PCR and molecular-epidemiologically analyzed the NLV epidemics. It is known that the NLV strains isolated from nine outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis, were divided into five clusters consisting of two genogroups. Described by the year of outbreaks, the genogroup-1 (Norwalk-like virus group) was prevalent in 1988, 1989, and 1992, the genogroup-2 (snow mountain-like virus group) was detected in 1988, 1989, and 1993.
