BACKGROUND: Heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) is an important cause of ill health in women and it accounts for 12% of all gynaecology referrals in the UK. Heavy menstrual bleeding is clinically defined as greater than or equal to 80 mL of blood loss per menstrual cycle. However, women may complain of excessive bleeding when their blood loss is less than 80 mL. Hysterectomy is often used to treat women with this complaint but medical therapy may be a successful alternative. The intrauterine device was originally developed as a contraceptive but the addition of progestogens to these devices resulted

OBJECTIVE: Menstrual irregularity is one of the major complaints in women of reproductive age. The aim of this study was to evaluate the complications in women with different menstrual disturbances.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective study. A total of 576 women were screened first, and 470 women were included later [257 women with oligo/amenorrhea (149 hyperandrogenic and 108 nonhyperandrogenic women) and 213 normocyclic controls]. Endocrine and metabolic parameters and insulin resistance were compared among different menstrual patterns.
RESULTS: The average duration of menstrual

RESEARCH QUESTION: What is the individualized bleeding experience of women with fibroids and anaemia in a 3 month randomized placebo controlled trial (PEARL I) of the selective progesterone receptor modulator (SPRM), ulipristal acetate (UPA)?
SUMMARY ANSWER: In contrast to continuing excessive regular menstruation in the placebo group, a majority of women treated with UPA (63.1% of those on 5 mg/day and 71.3% of those on 10 mg/day) experienced the rapid onset of amenorrhoea or minimal blood loss [pictorial blood loss assessment chart (PBAC) < 12]. The remainder experienced various patterns of

OBJECTIVE: Insulin resistance (IR) is frequent in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and contributes to the increased risk for type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease of this population. Several markers of IR are used but most are expensive or have limited sensitivity and specificity. Preliminary data suggest that the menstrual cycle pattern correlates with IR in PCOS but existing studies are small. We aimed to assess the relationship between the type of menstrual cycle irregularities and IR in PCOS.
DESIGN: Prospective study.
METHODS: We studied 1285 women with PCOS, divided accor

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory bowel disease may show a life long persistence, while female fertility is time-limited.
AIM: The aim of the authors was to obtain more knowledge about the obstetrical-gynecological aspects of this disorder.
METHODS: The authors evaluated 100 patients with inflammatory bowel disease and 100 healthy women with a self-composed questionnaire.
RESULTS: Menarche occurred significantly earlier in patients than in controls (p = 0,03). Either the activity of the disease, or the therapy itself may initiate irregularities in the menstrual cycle. Patients used contraceptives

INTRODUCTION: Hormonal factors are implicated in tumor progression and it is possible that factors influencing breast cancer induction could affect prognosis. Our study investigated the effects of menstrual risk factors on tumor characteristics and survival in postmenopausal breast cancer.
METHODS: We used a nationwide, population-based, case-case design of 2,640 Swedish women who were 50 to 74 years old and had postmenopausal breast cancer during 1993 to 1995. Follow-up was conducted until 31 December 2000. We used polytomous multiple logistic regression to investigate the relationships betw

BACKGROUND: Dysfunctional uterine bleeding (DUB) is excessively heavy, prolonged or frequent bleeding of uterine origin which is not due to pregnancy or to recognisable pelvic or systemic disease. Anovulation may be inferred from a number of observations but, in the normal clinical situation, anovulation is often assumed when a woman presents with heavy, prolonged or frequent bleeding, particularly in those who are at the extremes of reproductive life and in women known to have polycystic ovarian syndrome. Menstrual bleeding that is irregular or excessive is poorly tolerated by the majority of

BACKGROUND: There is an assumption that in women with menorrhagia 'excessive menstrual loss in regular cycles is the most common clinical presentation' yet epidemiological studies show irregular cycles and bleeding are common.
OBJECTIVES: To test the hypothesis that, in women who present to primary care with menorrhagia, excessive menstrual loss in regular cycles is the most common clinical presentation, and to determine the frequency with which symptoms known to be associated with gynaecological malignancy occur.
METHODS: A postal survey of all women aged 18-54 years was used to identify sy

The energy balance and nutritional adequacy was assessed in a group of runners with irregular menstrual function (IR, n = 10) and in a comparable group of runners with normal menstrual function (R, n = 10). Based on computerized records of 3 days food intake, the mean content of energy and macronutrients were estimated. Excess energy expenditure (EEE) during training hours was estimated using HF monitoring and individual HF/VO2 nomograms. For the rest of a daily 24 h cycle, estimated values for basal metabolic rate (BMR) and sedentary metabolic rate were applied. Daily training-related excess

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent girls often visit the outpatient endocrinological clinic because of menstrual disorders. The problem arises whether to recognize the menstrual cycle irregularity as a physiology of the adolescence or to initiate diagnostic procedures to exclude pathology. Although irregular menses during first 3 years after menarche are usually symptoms of hypothalamus-pituitary-ovary axis immaturity, it does not exclude disorders to be subject of diagnosis and treatment. THE AIM OF THE STUDY was to evaluate causes of menstrual disorders in adolescent girls, who visited the outpatient

College-age young women frequently experience a variety of menstrual-related complaints, including dysmenorrheal, menorrhagia, irregular menses, and menstrual-related mood changes. These problems deserve careful evaluation; they may reflect normal ovulatory menstrual symptoms or be suggestive of significant pathology that can have a major impact on future reproductive and general health. The menstrual cycle is a vital sign whose normalcy suggests an overall good health and whose abnormality requires evaluation. Eating disorders and the female athlete triad increase the risk of osteoporosis; po

PURPOSE: Many female adolescents suffer menstrual pain and their daily activities are often adversely affected. It is, therefore, necessary to clarify what factors are associated with menstrual pain in order to assist in improving their quality of life (QOL). The purpose of the present study was to examine if adolescents' physique, which reflects their diet and physical activities, has any influence on the frequency of menstrual pain. Especial attention was concentrated on the Body Mass Index (BMI).
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Using a cross-sectional sample of 2,718 college women aged 18 to 21, bot
