Menstruation in adolescents with familial Mediterranean fever: attack trigger or dysmenorrhoea? A prospective cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the relationship between menstruation and familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) attacks in adolescents and whether menstrual symptoms indicate true FMF flares or primary dysmenorrhoea (PD) or premenstrual syndrome (PMS). METHODS: This prospective cross-sectional study included 42 adolescents diagnosed with FMF. Patients with comorbidities, secondary dysmenorrhoea or less than 1 year post-menarche were excluded. FMF attacks were classified according to Eurofever/PRINTO criteria, and CRP was measured on the first and 15th days of attacks and menstruation. Partic

Whole-body thermal therapies for symptom management and well-being in people assigned female at birth with chronic pelvic pain, dysmenorrhoea, endometriosis or adenomyosis: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Dysmenorrhoea is one of the most frequent manifestations of chronic pelvic pain. Endometriosis and adenomyosis are among the most common pathological causes of secondary dysmenorrhoea. Symptoms often persist despite treatment, so individuals frequently engage in self-management strategies. One self-management approach that may have potential benefits for chronic pain is whole-body thermal therapy, which involves exposure to heat or cold stimuli inducing systemic physiological responses. The aim of this scoping review is to map and synthesise the available literature on the use an

The genetics of primary dysmenorrhoea: a systematic review.

ABSTRACT: Dysmenorrhoea is the most common gynaecological condition in women of reproductive age. Approximately 90% of cases are primary dysmenorrhoea (PDM), which is not associated with an underlying pathology. Dysmenorrhoea can have a substantial impact on quality of life, yet current therapies do not provide adequate relief to everyone. Family history (FHx) is a known risk factor that suggests genetic involvement. We therefore aimed to synthesise the literature describing the genetics of PDM. Three databases (MEDLINE, Embase and Web of Science) were searched for studies published up to Nove

Vitamin D Supplementation for Patients with Dysmenorrhoea: A Meta-Analysis with Trial Sequential Analysis of Randomised Controlled Trials.

Vitamin D reduces prostaglandin levels and inflammation, making it a promising treatment option for dysmenorrhoea. However, its effects on pain intensity in different types of dysmenorrhoea remain unclear. We examined whether vitamin D supplementation decreases pain intensity in patients with dysmenorrhoea. The Cochrane Library, Embase, Google Scholar, Medline, and Scopus databases were searched from inception to 30 December 2023. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating vitamin D supplementation effects on such patients were included. The primary and secondary outcomes were measured by

Incidence of menstrual symptoms suggestive of possible endometriosis in adolescents: and variance in these by ethnicity and socio-economic status.

BACKGROUND: Dysmenorrhoea affects up to 94% of adolescents who menstruate; approximately one third miss school and activities. Dysmenorrhoea can occur without identified pelvic pathology (primary dysmenorrhoea) or in association with other conditions (secondary dysmenorrhoea). In adolescence, the commonest cause of secondary dysmenorrhoea is endometriosis. The incidence of symptoms in adolescence suggesting possible endometriosis has not been previously documented in GP records. AIM: To document incidence of adolescent endometriosis and symptoms associated with endometriosis in English GP rec

Adolescent dysmenorrhoea in general practice: tensions and uncertainties.

This Perspectives article reflects on findings from our systematic review about adolescent dysmenorrhoea Q, drawing on sociology of diagnosis theory. We consider tensions and uncertainties between presentation with symptoms of dysmenorrhoea and processes of symptom categorisation and diagnosis in adolescents, tracing these through research and clinical guidance, considering possible implications for clinical practice. We argue that challenges in distinguishing between primary and secondary dysmenorrhoea in research translate into challenges in differentiation in clinical practice. We argue tha

Efficacy of Connective Tissue Therapy and Abdominal Stretching Exercises in Individuals With Primary Dysmenorrhea: A Review.

Dysmenorrhea is a menstrual disorder characterized by painful uterine cramps that occur during menstruation. There are two types of dysmenorrhea, primary and secondary. It affects 45-95% of all menstruating women worldwide. The prevalence in India is approximately 75%. Primary dysmenorrhea diagnosis is based on the patient's medical history and physical examination. If the history of start and duration of lower abdominal discomfort suggests secondary dysmenorrhoea or if the dysmenorrhoea does not respond to medical treatment, a pelvic examination is necessary to evaluate dysmenorrhoea. Because

A longitudinal study of adolescent dysmenorrhoea into adulthood.

Dysmenorrhoea is the most common gynaecological symptom in adolescents. Secondary dysmenorrhoea is mostly due to endometriosis. There are no known follow-up studies of dysmenorrhoea into adulthood. Cases of endometriosis often have a long history of dysmenorrhea; however, studies to date have been retrospective. This longitudinal cohort study aimed at analysing the long-term outcomes of dysmenorrhoea and associated rate of endometriosis identified in this cohort. Participants of a study of adolescents seen for dysmenorrhoea were followed-up at an average of 10.24 years. Of those contactable (7

Dietary supplements for dysmenorrhoea.

BACKGROUND: Dysmenorrhoea refers to painful menstrual cramps and is a common gynaecological complaint. Conventional treatments include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and oral contraceptive pills (OCPs), which both reduce myometrial activity (contractions of the uterus). A suggested alternative approach is dietary supplements. We used the term 'dietary supplement' to include herbs or other botanical, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and amino acids. We excluded traditional Chinese medicines. OBJECTIVES: To determine the efficacy and safety of dietary supplements for treating dysmen

A clinical score can predict associated deep infiltrating endometriosis before surgery for an endometrioma.

STUDY QUESTION: Is it possible to detect associated deep infiltrating endometriosis (DIE) before surgery for patients operated on for endometriomas using a preoperative clinical symptoms questionnaire? SUMMARY ANSWER: A diagnostic score of DIE associated with endometriomas using four clinical symptoms defined a high-risk group where the probability of DIE was 88% and a low-risk group with a 10% probability of DIE. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Many clinical symptoms are already known to be associated with DIE but they have not yet been used to build a clinical prediction model. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE,

Menstrual pain and associated factors amongst undergraduates of Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma, Edo State, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: We determined the prevalence of dysmenorrhoea and associated factors amongst undergraduates in a Nigerian university. Information on dysmenorrhoea amongst Nigerian populace is limited as it is seen as a norm and hence unreported. This is in spite of its consequences on women's socio-economic lives. METHOD: This was a prospective questionnaire-based study. Cluster sampling technique was used and tests of statistical significance were done using Yates corrected Chi square. RESULTS: The prevalence of dysmenorrhoea in this study was 76.3%. The mean age at menarche was 13.8 years. Dys

Behavioural interventions for primary and secondary dysmenorrhoea.

BACKGROUND: Dysmenorrhoea refers to the occurrence of painful menstrual cramps of uterine origin and is a common gynaecological condition with considerable morbidity. The behavioural approach assumes that psychological and environmental factors interact with, and influence, physiological processes. Behavioural interventions for dysmenorrhoea may include both physical and cognitive procedures and focus on both physical and psychological coping strategies for dysmenorrhoeic symptoms rather than modification of any underlying organic pathology. OBJECTIVES: To determine the effectiveness of any b

Painful menstruation.

Painful menstruation is a cyclic painful condition that adversely affects the woman's wellbeing for a large part of her life. Its pathogenesis is not always understood. Prostaglandins seem to be intimately involved in primary dysmenorrhoea although it is difficult to understand the underlying cause for their excessive secretion. Abnormalities in plasma steroid levels could account for the disturbance, especially significantly elevated plasma levels of estradiol in the luteal phase. Plasma levels of vasopressin appear to be higher in women with dysmenorrhea suggesting a possible aetiological ro

Spinal manipulation for primary and secondary dysmenorrhoea.

BACKGROUND: Dysmenorrhoea refers to the occurrence of painful menstrual cramps of uterine origin and is a common gynaecological condition. One possible treatment is spinal manipulation therapy. One hypothesis is that mechanical dysfunction in certain vertebrae causes decreases spinal mobility. This could affect the sympathetic nerve supply to the blood vessels supplying the pelvic viscera, leading to dysmenorrhoea as a result of vasoconstriction. Manipulation of these vertebrae increases spinal mobility and may improve pelvic blood supply. Another hypothesis is that dysmenorrhoea is referred p
