Tinea nigra (TN) is a superficial fungal infection caused by the melanized fungus Hortaea werneckii, characterized by irregular dark patches, typically on the palms. This systematic review aims to evaluate the epidemiology, demographic characteristics, lesion distribution, diagnostic approaches, causative agents, and treatment outcomes of TN. The PubMed and MEDLINE databases were systematically searched using relevant keywords from January 1990 to January 2025, yielding a total of 102 cases across 42 studies. TN is more prevalent in tropical regions, with a higher incidence in the Americas (64

Tinea nigra (TN) is a rare superficial phaeohyphomycosis, predominantly caused by Hortaea werneckii, often misdiagnosed due to its resemblance to melanocytic lesions. We report a series of four pediatric cases presenting with slowly enlarging unilateral palmar hyperpigmented macules, confirmed in one patient through direct mycological examination and culture. All cases were successfully treated with topical azole antifungals, achieving complete resolution within 4 weeks. This report highlights the importance of clinical suspicion, dermoscopic evaluation, and direct microscopy for accurate diag

The Arabian Gulf surrounding Qatar is an oligotrophic marine environment characterized by extreme conditions, such as increased water temperatures and high salinity compared to other semi-enclosed seas, such as the Mediterranean Sea. Thirty-six black yeast-like isolates were obtained from marine waters surrounding Qatar, representing 4% of all isolated yeasts. DNA sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacers (ITS1, ITS2), the 5.8S rRNA gene, and the D1/D2 domains of the LSU rDNA identified 20 isolates as Hortaea werneckii, and 15 (75%) of them represent previously unknown genotypes wi

Tinea nigra, a rare superficial fungal infection caused by Hortaea werneckii, is often mistaken for a melanocytic lesion. We report a case in Shenzhen, a city in southern China, involving a 31-year-old woman with slowly enlarging brown patches on her left palm over 15 years. The patches were smooth, asymptomatic, and without scaling or travel history to tropical regions. Dermatological examination revealed a 30 mm × 25-mm brown macule with distinct borders. Dermoscopic analysis showed brownish-gray pigmented strands parallel to skin ridges, differing from the pattern in melanoma. Histopatholog

The aim of the present investigation was to determine by questionnaire, UK dentists' perception of Dentine Hypersensitivity (DH) and knowledge of its treatment. A total of 403 questionnaires were sent to a selected group of UK dentists who had either inquired about further postgraduate education or had attended a course at the Eastman Dental Institute/Hospital. A total of 181 of 403 dentists (44.9%) (118M; 36F, 17 no response, mean age 38.2 years [s.d. 8.97]) returned the questionnaire. About 92.8% (n=168) of responding dentists claimed to see patients with DH in their practice. According to t

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the ultrastructure of Piedraia hortae.
OBJECTIVE: To examine a P. hortae colony with scanning electron microscopy and investigate possible contributions to its the pathogenesis of black piedra.
RESULTS: On low magnifications, two distinct aspects of the colony are identified, a compact area and a filamentous area. Analysis of the filamentous area demonstrates hyphae adhered by a thin reticular substance. A recurring finding is the adhesion between the fungal filaments in parallel. On high magnifications, the microfibrillar substance adhering the hyphae to ea

Trichosporon spp. is an emerging opportunistic pathogen and a common cause of both superficial and invasive infections. Although Trichosporon asahii is the most frequently isolated species, Trichosporon cutaneum is also widely observed, as it is the predominant agent in cases of white Piedra and onychomycosis. Trichosporon spp. is a known to produce biofilms, which serve as one of its virulence mechanisms, however, there is limited data available on biofilms formed by T. cutaneum. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the adhesion and biofilm formation of two clinical isolates of T. cutane

This case report describes a rare fungal infection, piedra alba, in a 5-year-old female initially misdiagnosed. Treatment with 2 % ketoconazole shampoo led to significant regression within a week, without the need for hair cutting. We discuss the importance of early and accurate diagnosis, highlighting potential hair damage and complications in immunocompromised cases. Dermatoscopy aided diagnosis, and 2 % ketoconazole demonstrated efficacy, emphasizing the need for a multidisciplinary approach and dermatological follow-up.

The genus Trichosporon are currently recognized as opportunistic pathogens capable of causing superficial "white piedra" infections and potentially fatal invasive diseases (Trichosporonosis). In this work, determine the agent Trichosporon spp. isolated from the skin and appendages of a male population group in the Central-West region of Brazil. The isolates were analyzed by phenotypic, biochemical and molecular methods. Twenty-five strains of Trichosporon were isolated: T. asahii (18; 72%), followed by T. inkin (4; 16%) and T. faecale (3; 12%). Skin infections were the most affected (16; 64%)

Piedras are small nodules found on the hair shafts. White piedra was initially described as caused by Trichosporon beigelii, which was later reclassified in several species. We describe the first case of white piedra caused by Cutaneotrichosporon debeurmannianum. Affected hairs were examined in natura with scanning electron microscopy, after gold metallization. The typical whitish cerebriform creamy colony was obtained in Sabouraud medium. Fungal genomic DNA extracted from cultures and locus was amplified with the NL1/NL4 primer pair from the D1/D2 region of the large ribosomal subunit (LSU) o

INTRODUCTION: Pityriasis versicolor (PV) often exhibits recurrence even despite treatment, and a standardized therapy with a complete cure rate remains elusive. Given the fungicidal property of amphotericin B, its potential for PV treatment warrants investigation.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare the efficacy of topical liposomal amphotericin B and clotrimazole cream in treating PV.
METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was conducted with 44 PV patients, aged 15 to 70 years, who were equally assigned to either the amphotericin or clotrimazole group. The trial was registered at the Ir

Evidence of fungal coexistence in humans points towards fungal adaptation to the host environment, like the skin. The human commensal Malassezia has evolved, especially residing in sebum-rich areas of the mammalian body where it can get the necessary nutrition for its survival. This fungus is primarily responsible for skin diseases like Pityriasis versicolor (PV), characterized by hypo or hyperpigmented skin discoloration and erythematous macules. In this manuscript, we report a 19-year-old healthy female who presented with a one-year history of reddish, hypopigmented, asymptomatic lesions ove
