Invasive Pulmonary Infection of Malassezia Species in a Patient With Ulcerative Colitis: A Case Report.

Malassezia species are lipophilic yeasts recognized for causing skin manifestations, such as pityriasis versicolor. In addition, Malassezia can lead to invasive infection, mostly intravascular catheter-associated sepsis-related lipid-containing total parenteral nutrition in neonates and immunocompromised hosts. We experienced a case of invasive pulmonary Malassezia infection in a patient with refractory ulcerative colitis undergoing immunosuppressive treatment without lipid-containing total parenteral nutrition. Computed tomography (CT) images showed multiple lung nodules with CT halo signs. F

Speciation of Malassezia and determination of sebum and hydration levels in secondary school students in Nigeria.

Pityriasis versicolor (PV) is a common skin condition associated with Malassezia species. Factors influencing PV development, such as sebum and skin hydration levels, are not fully understood, especially among adolescents. This study aimed to determine Malassezia speciation and assess sebum and hydration levels in secondary school students with PV in Ibadan, Nigeria. A cross-sectional study was conducted among secondary school students with PV and a control group. Sebum and hydration levels were measured using a sebumeter and corneometer, respectively. Malassezia speciation was determined thro

Beyond the Surface: Decoding Pityriasis Versicolor Through Clinical, Dermoscopic and Microbiological Exploration.

BACKGROUND: Pityriasis versicolor (PV) is an asymptomatic, superficial fungal infection caused by the Malassezia species and causes discolouration of the skin leading to altered pigmentation. It is usually a clinical diagnosis, but in doubtful cases wherein potassium hydroxide (KOH) mount is unavailable, alternative modalities like dermoscopy aid in the management. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the clinical and dermoscopic patterns in PV and correlate with the associated risk factors and study the fungal culture. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted f

Erythrasmoid pityriasis versicolor: three case reports and review of the literature.

Pityriasis versicolor is clinically characterized by slightly scaly, hyper- or hypopigmented macules usually located on the chest, shoulders, back, and arms. Rare cases of atypical locations of pityriasis versicolor have been described, such as groins, penis, and perineum. We present three cases of pityriasis versicolor located exclusively on the submammary folds, pubis, and inguinal folds (the latter in an 11-year-old girl), respectively. Considering both the location and clinical presentation of pityriasis versicolor in these three patients, we think the diagnosis of erythrasmoid pityriasis

Standardization of polymerase chain reaction for detection of fluconazole resistance targeting Y132F mutation in ERG11 gene in Candida parapsilosis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Candida parapsilosis is the third most commonly isolated species from candidemia patients admitted to Indian intensive care units. Outbreak of infection and emergence of fluconazole resistance associated with this particular species has been increasingly documented since 2018. Worldwide data has documented that Y132F substitution in the ERG11 gene is the predominant fluconazole resistance mechanism among C parapsilosis. Hence, this study aimed to detect fluconazole resistance by targeting Y132F mutation in the ERG11 gene in C. parapsilosis, by conventional polymerase ch

Tinea Nigra: Clinical and Diagnostic Guidance.

Tinea nigra is a rare superficial fungal infection characterized by asymptomatic, unilateral, well-defined brown to black macules predominantly affecting the palms and soles. Diagnosis is often challenging due to its rarity and resemblance to other pigmented lesions. This report presents a clinical case, a diagnostic algorithm, and treatment recommendations, emphasizing the role of thorough examination and questioning. We describe the case of a 64-year-old woman of Amerindian (Maya) heritage from Yucatan, Mexico, who presented with a three-month history of a slowly growing dark spot on her lef

The Likelihood of Resistant Tinea Capitis Caused by Hortaea Werneckii: A Case Report.

This case study illustrates a 24-year-old Chinese man who presented with tinea capitis associated with a fungal infection. He was administered a therapeutic regimen consisting of terbinafine, ketoconazole cream, and miconazole shampoo for 2 months. However, the symptoms recurred 3 months after the treatment ended. Fungal culture and sequencing confirmed the infection of Hortaea werneckii. Drug sensitivity testing showed that the infecting strain of the patient remained sensitive to the five commonly used antifungal drugs in vitro. While most cases infected by Hortaea werneckii present with Tin

Dermoscopic Examination of Tinea Nigra on the Plantar Foot Unveils a Parallel Ridge Pattern Mimicking Acral-Lentiginous Melanoma.

A man in his thirties patient visited his previous physician with the chief complaint of a pigmented macule on the sole of his left foot that had steadily grown over the past two years. A dermoscopic examination of the lesion showed a parallel ridge pattern (PRP); therefore, acral-lentiginous melanoma (ALM) was suspected, and the patient was referred to our hospital for a more detailed examination. On closer inspection, PRP had a well-defined and irregular border with no variation in color, which is atypical for ALM which is characterized by asymmetrical structure and variation in colors. Ther

Strategies for genetic manipulation of the halotolerant black yeast Hortaea werneckii: ectopic DNA integration and marker-free CRISPR/Cas9 transformation.

Hortaea werneckii is a halotolerant black yeast commonly found in hypersaline environments. This yeast is also the causative agent of tinea nigra, a superficial mycosis of the palm of the hand and soles of the feet of humans. In addition to their remarkable halotolerance, this black yeast exhibits an unconventional cell division cycle, alternating between fission and budding cell division. Cell density and the salt concentration in their environment regulate which cell division cycle H. werneckii uses. Although H. werneckii have been extensively studied due to their unique physiology and cell

Dermatology in black skin.

The vast majority of publications in dermatology refer to lightly pigmented skin, with few addressing the peculiarities of black skin. In addition there is no consensus on what it means to be black in different regions of the world. The lack of knowledge on the subject makes it difficult to recognize and manage dermatoses in this type of skin. This article aims to review the literature on intrinsic characteristics, as well as epidemiological and clinical aspects of the cutaneous manifestations of different dermatoses in black skin. It was found that there are sometimes striking differences, in

Antifungal susceptibility profile of Trichosporon inkin: About three cases of White Piedra.

Trichosporon spp. usually cause systemic or superficial infections. Three cases of White Piedra produced by Trichosporon inkin are described. The in vitro antifungal activity to fluconazole, amphotericin B, ketoconazole and caspofungin against the three clinical isolates were evaluated. Sensitivity to fluconazole and ketoconazole was evidenced. However, the treatment of this mycosis is still a challenge.

This study analyzes the clinical characteristics of patients diagnosed with White Piedra through a systematic review of cases in the literature. A sample of 131 subjects was considered, of which 91.6% were female and most were 18 years of age or younger. Most studies were conducted in Brazil, followed by India, and Mexico. The most common etiologic agent found was Trichosporon spp (34.3%). Most affected patients were asymptomatic (94.6%) and predisposing factors included long hair, use of a hair band or hair accessories, and wet hair. The most common clinical feature was the presence of nodule

Post-Inflammatory Hypopigmentation: Review of the Etiology, Clinical Manifestations, and Treatment Options.

Post-inflammatory hypopigmentation is a common acquired pigmentary disorder that is more prominent in skin of color, leading to great cosmetic and psychosocial implications. Often, a diagnosis with a pigmentary disorder can negatively impact an individual's health-related quality of life and may result in stigma. Although most cases of post-inflammatory hypopigmentation resolve spontaneously over time, a systematic diagnostic approach can help with identifying the underlying etiology and informing treatment strategies. It can be due to cutaneous inflammation, sequelae of inflammatory or infect
