BACKGROUND: Malassezia furfur is a member of the human skin microbiomes that can cause various skin diseases. Dimorphism plays a role as the yeast phase predominates during skin colonisation whereas mycelial forms are observed in the scales of patients with pityriasis versicolor (PV). However, due to their condition-dependence for growth, it is difficult to culture M. furfur and this is an additional challenge for studying the pathogenicity of this fungus.
OBJECTIVE: To describe different media suitable for culturing Malassezia from the yeast phase into mycelial forms, with a particular focus

Mycoviruses are viruses that selectively infect and multiply in fungal cells. Malassezia is the most abundant fungus on human skin and is associated with a variety of conditions, including atopic eczema, atopic dermatitis, dandruff, folliculitis, pityriasis versicolor, and seborrheic dermatitis. Here, we conducted mycovirome studies on 194 public transcriptomes of Malassezia (2,568,212,042 paired-end reads) screened against all available viral proteins. Transcriptomic data were assembled de novo resulting in 1,170,715 contigs and 2,995,306 open reading frames (ORFs) that were subsequently trac

BACKGROUND: Hypopigmented patches in patients with skin of color are usually a cause of concern. Pityriasis alba is a common skin condition that causes visible patches of hypopigmentation in children and adolescents. In addition to the cosmetic impairment, parents are concerned about the diagnosis of vitiligo and leprosy which also cause hypopigmented patches and have negative social implications. Dermoscopy is a useful diagnostic aid that is acquiring prominence in diagnosing a variety of skin diseases. Few studies exist that validate the use of dermoscopy as an effective tool in the diagnosi

Tinea versicolor (TV) is a superficial fungal disease caused by Malassezia furfur, most commonly affecting adolescents and adults. TV is uncommon among newborns, particularly those aged under one year. Poor hygiene and perspiration, immunosuppression, the use of oils and greasy lotions, hyperhidrosis, and corticosteroids may all contribute to the appearance of the condition. It is clinically distinguished by hypopigmentation or hyperpigmentation. Most often, it occurs over the trunk. Treatment for TV usually begins with the use of a topical antifungal. This case report presents a rare TV in a

Confluent and reticulated papillomatosis (CARP) is a rare disorder mostly seen in young adults. It is characterized by persistent dull-brown, centrally confluent, peripherally reticulate macules and papules, which coalesce to form patches and plaques on the upper trunk and neck. It is commonly confused with pityriasis versicolor and acanthosis nigricans (AN). We report the case of a 15-year-old male with multiple pigmented confluent and reticulated patches and plaques on the neck, trunk, and chin for 3 years, which was successfully treated with oral minocycline, resulting in complete resolutio

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Morbidity and mortality of opportunistic fungal infections in COVID-19 patients are less studied and defined. The patients receiving immunosuppressive therapy, broad-spectrum antibiotics, corticosteroids, and invasive and non-invasive ventilation are the high-risk groups.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The demographic profile as well as clinical and radiological findings of all the patients with COVID-19 suspected of Mucormycosis (MM) were recorded. The tissue samples from all the patients were sent for microbiological (KOH mount and culture) and histopathological analysis for

INTRODUCTION: Malassezia spp. are a group of lipid-dependent basidiomycetes yeasts acting as commensal organisms of the human and animal skin. However, under some not well-defined circumstances, these yeasts may switch to opportunistic pathogens triggering a number of skin disorders with different clinical presentations. The genus comprises of 18 lipid-dependent species with a variable distribution in the hosts and pathologies thus suggesting a host- and microbe-specific interactions.
AREA COVERED: This review highlighted and discussed the most recent literature regarding the genus Malassezia

This narrative review presents a comprehensive overview of the diagnosis and management of pityriasis versicolor (PV), a common superficial fungal infection caused by the yeast Malassezia. PV is characterised by scaly hypopigmented or hyperpigmented patches, primarily affecting the upper trunk, neck, and upper arms. Regarding commensal interactions, Malassezia utilises nutrient sources without affecting the human host. In cases of pathogenicity, Malassezia can directly harm the host via virulence factors or toxins, or indirectly by triggering damaging host responses. The diagnosis typically re

Epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EV) is a rare inherited immune disease characterized by pityriasis versicolor-like macules, hyperpigmented or hypopigmented warty papules and irregular reddish-brown plaques, mainly on the face, neck and extremities. Some therapeutic options include medications, lifestyle changes, ALA-PDT, surgery and so on. But there is no cure for EV and thus the clinical management is challenging. We report a case of EV that was refractory to multiple therapies and achieved an encouraging result with a combination therapy of surgery and 5-aminolevulinic acid photodynamic the

A 38-year-old Hispanic man without comorbidities presented to our dermatology clinic for the evaluation of an asymptomatic dark macule on his left hand, which had gradually grown since he was a child. The hyperpigmentation involved the dorsum and palm (Figure 1). The patient was right-handed and denied previous trauma, inflammation, occupational exposure to chemicals, or using any medications. During physical examination, no other similar pigmentation was found on the rest of his body. An incisional biopsy of the left palm was performed (Figure 2). The histopathology revealed the presence of s

Fenticonazole is an imidazole derivative with a broad spectrum of antimycotic activity against dermatophytes and yeasts in in vitro and clinical studies. Fenticonazole exerts its unique antimycotic mechanism of action in the following three ways: (i) inhibition of the secretion of protease acid by Candida albicans; (ii) damage to the cytoplasmic membrane; and (iii) by blocking cytochrome oxidases and peroxidises. Fenticonazole has also been shown to exhibit antibacterial action, with a spectrum of activity that includes bacteria commonly associated with superinfected fungal skin and vaginal in

BACKGROUND: Gut microbiota (GM) is closely associated with the onset of depression, in which inflammation plays an essential role. Identifying specific GM associated with depression and their mechanisms, based on the principles of predictive, preventive, and personalized medicine (PPPM), is a critical step toward achieving targeted prevention and personalized treatment for depression.
WORKING HYPOTHESIS AND METHODOLOGY: We hypothesized that both gut microbiota (GM) and cytokines influence the onset of depression, with cytokines acting as mediators of GM effects on depression. To test this hyp

Malassezia (M.) genus includes commensal yeasts of increasing medical importance, as they result in many diseases, ranging from pityriasis versicolor (PV) to systemic infections. Previous studies reported geographical variations in distribution of Malassezia species in PV lesions. The aims of the current study were to define the clinico-demographic features of PV in Tunisia, to characterize Malassezia isolates using phenotypic and molecular techniques and to find out any association between species and clinico-demographic parameters. In total, 120 PV patients were enrolled in this study. Skin
