Exploring undergraduates' knowledge, attitude, and perception of male infertility in Osun State University: a mixed method study.

BACKGROUND: Infertility has traditionally been seen as a female problem, causing misconceptions, stigma, and limited attention to male infertility. This study examined undergraduates' knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of male infertility at Osun State University, Nigeria, and associated factors. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional mixed-methods design was used. Quantitative data came from 300 undergraduates selected by multistage sampling using a self-administered questionnaire; qualitative data came from focus group discussions. Quantitative analysis used IBM SPSS Statistics 27; quali

Male and female factors associated with infertility among couples attending an assisted reproductive technologies clinic in Harare, Zimbabwe.

Characterising causes of infertility is crucial to inform interventions that maximise chances of conception. In this descriptive cross-sectional study, we analysed records of 276 couples who visited an ART centre in Harare to determine the proportions of male and female factor infertility. We summarised categorical variables using percentages and determined associations between male and/or female causes of infertility and exploratory variables using the chi-square test. Around 67% of men had abnormal spermiograms; the commonest were oligoasthenozoospermia (28%) and teratozoospermia (24%). Arou

Social Norms and Supportive Communication in Infertility: Public Attitudes Toward Women's Reproductive Challenges.

PURPOSE: Infertility is an increasingly common women's health concern with well-documented mental health consequences, yet little research has examined how public communication and stigma shape the social support available to women experiencing fertility challenges. Supportive communication is a critical component of social support and may mitigate infertility-related distress, whereas stigmatizing attitudes and misconceptions may contribute to harmful or dismissive responses. This study examined potential attitude-based variables associated with helpful and unhelpful infertility-related commu

Delays in male infertility evaluation and their financial and emotional impact on couples.

BACKGROUND: Although male and female factors contribute equally to infertility, evaluation pathways frequently prioritize female-focused care, delaying appropriate assessment of male-factor infertility. This study aims to assess the impact of delayed urologic care for male-factor infertility couples by assessing emotional and financial well-being and evaluating how gendered assumptions influence the diagnostic and treatment pathways in their care. METHODS: An anonymous, electronic Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) survey was distributed from January 2023 to June 2025 to patients seeki

Reproductive outcomes after expectant management and 5- versus 15-minute laparoscopic ethanol sclerotherapy for ovarian endometriomas: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic ethanol sclerotherapy is a fertility-preserving alternative for ovarian endometriomas, but the appropriate ethanol exposure duration remains uncertain. We compared expectant management with 5- and 15-minute ethanol retention protocols. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 333 infertile women with ovarian endometriomas ≥4 cm and complete cumulative reproductive follow-up: expectant management (n=125), 5-minute (n=124), or 15-minute (n=84) laparoscopic ethanol sclerotherapy. Multinomial propensity scores and inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW)

Molecular stratification of ovarian insufficiency via novel MicroRNA signatures and target gene suppression.

INTRODUCTION: Diminished ovarian reserve (DOR) and premature ovarian failure (POF) are ovarian dysfunctions before age 40, with miRNAs implicated in their pathophysiology. This study evaluated IGF1R, POU2F, and potential regulators miR-507, miR-761, and miR-4770 across healthy, DOR, and POF groups. METHODS: Follicular fluid (FF), granulosa cells (GCs), and blood serum (BS) were obtained from 25 healthy controls undergoing ART for male-factor infertility, 25 DOR, and 15 POF patients. IGF1R/POU2F expression in GCs and miRNA levels in all samples were assessed by qRT-PCR. RESULTS: All miRs were

Male infertility remains underrepresented on French assisted reproduction centers' websites.

INTRODUCTION: Male infertility contributes to approximately half of infertility cases, yet patient-oriented information provided by assisted reproductive technology (ART) centers may remain predominantly focused on female factors. This study assessed the availability and scope of information on male infertility and the representation of urologists/andrologists on French ART center websites. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a nationwide cross-sectional content analysis of the official patient-oriented websites of all clinical ART centers listed in the 2026 national registry of the Agence de

Advanced paternal age affects miscarriages and live birth outcomes in oocyte donation cycles.

STUDY QUESTION: Does advanced paternal age affect miscarriage and/or live birth outcomes following the first transfer attempt in oocyte donation cycles? SUMMARY ANSWER: Paternal age has a gradual but cumulative effect that becomes apparent above 45 years of age, where it evidently increases miscarriage rates and decreases live birth rates following the first transfer in oocyte donation cycles. WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN: Donor oocyte cycles are becoming a common strategy for addressing female age-related infertility, offering high success rates (∼60% ongoing pregnancies) attributed to superior oo

Desire for future children and interest in consultation with a fertility specialist among adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer patients.

PURPOSE: Adolescent and young adult (AYA) patients (18-39) with cancer experience psychosocial challenges upon being diagnosed with cancer. AYAs are also at risk of potential infertility due to certain cancer treatments. We examined factors associated with desire for future children among AYAs. Among those interested in having future children or were unsure if they wanted children, we examined factors associated with interest in fertility consultations. METHODS: Patients completed an electronic patient questionnaire (EPQ) which included items assessing physical/mental health, desire for futur

Father and son with a pathogenic variant c.614dup p.(Gln206Thrfs*20) in the NR5A1 gene: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Steroidogenic factor 1 (SF-1), encoded by the NR5A1 gene, is a critical transcriptional regulator of adrenal and gonadal development. Pathogenic NR5A1 variants lead to a broad phenotypic spectrum characterized by insufficient virilization, including gonadal and testicular dysgenesis, ambiguous genitalia, hypospadias, micropenis, cryptorchidism, anorchia, and male infertility. This case report characterizes the clinical and genetic findings in a boy and his father with differences of sex development (DSD) caused by a heterozygous NR5A1 frameshift variant, thereby expanding our under

Factors Associated With Male-Factor Infertility Risk Perceptions Among Young Adults in Ontario.

Understanding male-factor infertility (MFI) risk perception among emerging adults can inform development of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) interventions. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of sociodemographic characteristics on perceptions of substance use behaviors and bioenvironmental risks to male fertility. An online survey was administered to Ontario post-secondary students from May ̶ October 25, 2022, assessing their perceptions of 15 MFI risk factors. Associations between sociodemographic characteristics and high-risk perceptions were first assessed by bivariate analyses,

Transcript profiling and gene regulation of the human pre-implantation embryo: parental effects and impact of ARTs.

BACKGROUND: Infertility is a growing global challenge, with ARTs significantly improving birth rates for infertile couples. However, ART conceptions are associated with a higher risk of negative obstetrical and perinatal outcomes, with potential long-term effects on offspring health. Many pre-implantation embryos exhibit abnormal morphokinetics, implantation failure, or arrested development. ART procedures and parental factors are suspected to perturb the embryonic transcriptome, potentially affecting molecular and epigenetic events during gametogenesis and early development. The timing and me

Efficacy of Gonadotropin Therapy to Induce Spermatogenesis and Fertility in Men with Pathologic Gonadotropin Deficiency.

CONTEXT: Gonadotropin treatment to induce spermatogenesis for gonadotropin-deficient men is the only medically treatable cause of male infertility. However, time-dependent analyses of fertility outcomes in large cohorts are lacking. We evaluated the time to, and determinants of, fertility outcomes in men with pathologic gonadotropin-deficiency undergoing gonadotropin treatment. METHODS: Consecutive infertile men (n = 99) with congenital or acquired pathologic gonadotropin deficiency were treated with urinary or recombinant human chorionic gonadotropin and FSH according to a standardized proto

Family planning of infertile couples: a systematic review of intentions regarding parenthood and return to ART.

STUDY QUESTION: What motivations and barriers influence family planning decisions among infertile individuals? SUMMARY ANSWER: In studying the family planning of infertile couples, this review found that a significant gap persists between desired and achieved family size. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: While ART has traditionally focused on live birth rate (LBR) as a primary success parameter, growing attention has been paid to whether treatments help couples achieve their desired family size. Evidence suggests that many infertile couples do not return to ART for subsequent children, despite having

Is Male Infertility an Early Warning of More Serious Diseases?

About 12% of couples worldwide are infertile. Male factor infertility causes or is contributory to a couple's ability to conceive in approximately 50% of cases. Evidence has emerged that infertile men have poor overall health and increased morbidity and mortality, yet the causes for this are poorly understood. Although these men may appear healthy, research shows that they can harbor a wide variety of systemic diseases and illnesses that may share common links with the causes of their infertility. In fact, as semen parameters decline, their risks of several health conditions increase. In the e

Gender differences in the association between alcohol use disorder and infertility: a nationwide population-based cohort study in Taiwan.

Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) has been associated with reproductive dysfunction, yet evidence regarding its long-term impact on infertility and whether this association differs by sex remains limited and methodologically inconsistent. To investigate the association between AUD and infertility in men and women using nationwide population-based data, and to formally evaluate whether this association differs by sex. We conducted a retrospective cohort study using Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Research Database. Individuals aged 15–49 years with newly diagnosed AUD were matched to non-AUD contro

Beijing's ART insurance coverage: enhancing outpatient visit frequency and reducing out-of-pocket costs.

BACKGROUND: The incorporation of assisted reproductive technology (ART) into Beijing’s medical insurance (MI) represents a significant policy change aimed at alleviating the declining fertility rates, with unknown effects on outpatient demographics and associated out-of-pocket cost (OOP), which refers to the medical expenses occurred since ART such that patients must cover themselves - within the parameters of the medical insurance catalog-without reimbursement. This study investigates and compares the changes in the demographic characteristics and OOP of outpatient visits before and after the

A KAP model-based retrospective study on the association between fertility stress and marital adjustment in patients undergoing assisted reproductive technology.

Patients undergoing assisted reproductive technology (ART) often experience considerable fertility-related stress, which may adversely affect their marital adjustment. The Knowledge-Attitude-Practice (KAP) model provides a theoretical framework for understanding patient cognition and behavior. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between fertility-related stress and marital adjustment, as well as its influencing factors. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 200 ART patients, divided into a high-stress group (n = 100) and a low-stress group (n = 100) based on the median fertili
