This report is based on 416 infertile female patients who were treated for 1,033 cycles with gonadotropins. 28.6% of the patients conceived after hMG/hCG treatment in 79.8% of these pregnancies, healthy children were born. Spontaneous abortion or premature birth occurred in 20.2% of the cases. The twin rate was 28.6%, the triplet rate 5.5%. Most of the abortions occurred in the first trimester (52.2%). A literature review of the occurrence of multiple pregnancies associated with artificial induction of ovulation is reported. This report considers three treatment schedules: (1) clomiphene citrate; (2) human pituitary gonadotrophin with human chorionic gonadotrophin; and (3) human menopausal gonadotrophin with human chorionic gonadotrophin. A patient with persistent ovarian cysts subsequent to clomiphene-induced severe hyperstimulation was found to have borderline ovarian carcinoma. Since several endocrine and epidemiological studies implicate hormonal factors in the genesis of ovarian tumors, a possible association between ovarian hyperstimulation and neoplasia is suggested.

A rare genital anomaly is described, consisting of a right hemiuterus with a rudimentary horn and a remotely located left fallopian tube, totally disconnected from the pelvic genitalia, and ruptured by an ectopic pregnancy. An associated finding was a unilateral hyperstimulated ovary (post HMG-HCG therapy), confined to an accessory ovary on the left.
