Efflorescence of acquired epidermodysplasia verruciformis due to immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome-like mechanisms following anti-HPV vaccination in a HIV-positive patient.

Epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EV) is a rare cutaneous pre-cancerous condition characterized by presence of flat, scaly macules, verruca-like papillomatous papules, seborrheic keratosis-like lesions, and pink-red pityriasis versicolor-like macules. The disease is caused by abnormal susceptibility to certain specific beta-HPV subtypes, most commonly 5 and 8. Classic EV is genetically determined, but in immunocompromised individuals, an acquired form can occur. Only 48 cases of acquired EV (AEV) in people living with HIV have been described. We describe a case of AEV in a 36-year-old HIV-posit

Immunophenotyping comparison of inflammatory cells between Malassezia folliculitis and pityriasis versicolor lesions.

UNLABELLED: Immunophenotyping of inflammatory dermal infiltrates in Malassezia folliculitis (MF) and pityriasis versicolor (PV) lesions is less reported. Immunohistochemistry was performed on 21 MF lesions, 10 PV lesions, and 10 control skin. CD3+, CD4+, CD8+, CD20+, CD68+, and CD117+ cells were increased in MF compared with PV and normal skin (P < 0.01-0.05), while CD3+, CD4+, and CD20+ cells were higher in PV than in normal skin (P < 0.05). Dermal CD1a+ cells were higher only in PV (P < 0.05). Although both cellular and humoral immune responses are involved in pathogenesis of MF and PV, thei

Lepromatous leprosy in a case of epidermodysplasia verruciformis - A coincidence or a result of defective cell-mediated immunity?

Epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EDV) is a rare, autosomal recessive, genetic disorder of immune dysregulation characterized by increased susceptibility to cutaneous human papilloma virus infections. It was first described by Lewandowsky and Lutz in 1922 as a form of epidermal nevus. Its association with skin cancers was proposed by Sullivan and Ellis in 1939. Initial lesions often occur in childhood and are of two types; lifelong eruptions of pityriasis versicolor like lesions and flat wart like papules. The latter is characterized by malignant transformation in 35%-50% of patients especially

Molecular miR-19a in Acute Myocardial Infarction: Novel Potential Indicators of Prognosis and Early Diagnosis.

OBJECTIVE: Due to the increasing annual incidence rate of disability and mortality in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI), the need for an appropriate diagnostic tool has become a crucial urgent issue. An increase in biomarkers and protein levels in response to AMI can be used as a predictive biomarker with different sensitivities and specificities. This study aimed at investigating the role of miR-19a as a biomarker with acceptable sensitivity and specificity for early diagnosis of AMI. METHODS: We studied 175 patients with AMI admitted within 12 h of symptom onset and 90 healthy

308-nm excimer laser: a hopeful and optional therapy for pityriasis versicolor.

BACKGROUND: Pityriasis Versicolor (PV) is known as a superficial fungal infection. It is suggested that resistant strains to azoles may be developed and hence, the treatment would be difficult. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of excimer laser (308 nm) as an alternative therapy for PV. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a prospective intra-patient left-to-right, randomized, placebo-controlled study conducted on 26 patients with bilateral lesions which are not responding to the PV standard treatment. Patients were randomly assigned to right or left-side therapy for a duration of 8 weeks w

Tinea InVersicolor: A Rare Distribution of a Common Eruption.

Tinea versicolor (TV), or pityriasis versicolor, is one of the most commonly occurring superficial mycoses. Typically, this condition is characterized by fine scaly hyper or hypopigmented macules and patches distributed on the trunk and upper extremities. Diagnosis is often based on clinical presentation. A Wood's lamp examination or potassium hydroxide (KOH) preparation test is performed for confirmation. To date, numerous morphologic variants of this condition have been described. Here we present an inverse papular variant that, to our knowledge, has only been previously reported once. This

Comparative study between topically applied irradiated human amniotic membrane in combination with tea tree oil versus topical tioconazole in pityraisis versicolor treatment.

Pityriasis versicolor (PV) is a chronic skin disease caused by virulence activities of Malassezia, a genus of skin-associated yeasts. Traditionally, Tioconazole is used as a topical antifungal for curing PV. Previous investigations cited that human amniotic membrane (HAM), a placental tissue, has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities and is useful as a dressing for healing skin lesions. Moreover, tea tree oil (TTO) has a potent antifungal efficacy. This clinical trial aims to achieve an alternative therapeutic treatment able to kill Malassezia and heal PV lesions using TTO-saturated H

Successful treatment of Pityriasis Versicolor by photodynamic therapy mediated by methylene blue.

BACKGROUND: Although systemic therapies are recommended for severe or recalcitrant cases of pityriasis versicolor (PV), they are not free of important side effects and drug interactions. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) utilizes the action of singlet oxygen and free radicals produced by a light-activated photosensitizer to kill viruses, bacteria, or fungi. In this study, the effect of a PDT mediated by methylene blue (MB) in PV was evaluated. METHODS: Five women with PV disseminated on the back and diagnosed by fresh microscopic analysis were treated with a solution of MB (2%) applied to the PV les

Malassezia-Associated Skin Diseases, the Use of Diagnostics and Treatment.

Yeasts of the genus, Malassezia, formerly known as Pityrosporum, are lipophilic yeasts, which are a part of the normal skin flora (microbiome). Malassezia colonize the human skin after birth and must therefore, as commensals, be normally tolerated by the human immune system. The Malassezia yeasts also have a pathogenic potential where they can, under appropriate conditions, invade the stratum corneum and interact with the host immune system, both directly but also through chemical mediators. The species distribution on the skin and the pathogenetic potential of the yeast varies between differe

Galleria mellonella as a Novelty in vivo Model of Host-Pathogen Interaction for Malassezia furfur CBS 1878 and Malassezia pachydermatis CBS 1879.

Malassezia furfur and Malassezia pachydermatis are lipophilic and lipid dependent yeasts, associated with the skin microbiota in humans and domestic animals, respectively. Although they are commensals, under specific conditions they become pathogens, causing skin conditions, such as pityriasis versicolor, dandruff/seborrheic dermatitis, folliculitis in humans, and dermatitis and otitis in dogs. Additionally, these species are associated with fungemia in immunocompromised patients and low-weight neonates in intensive care units with intravenous catheters or with parenteral nutrition and that ar
