BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Skin diseases are common in children. Epidemiologic studies of skin diseases in schoolchildren performed by direct inspection by dermatologists are limited in Taiwan. The current study surveyed the prevalence of selected childhood dermatoses in Magong City, Penghu, the largest offshore island of Taiwan.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out in June 2005, in which a total of 3273 children aged 6-11 years living in Magong were examined by at least two board-certified dermatologists, with regard to the point prevalence of acne, ephelides, atopic dermatitis, warts,

Tinea nigra is an asymptomatic superficial fungal infection caused by Phaeoannelomyces werneckii, generally affecting the skin of the palms and characterized by deeply pigmented macular non-scaly patches. These lesions are quite characteristic. However, they can be misdiagnosed as a malignant melanoma or a junctional melanocytic nevus and unnecessary biopsies may be performed. Thus, dermoscopy is a fast, useful, clinical adjunctive tool in differentiating tinea nigra from melanocytic lesion.

BACKGROUND: There is upcoming evidence that dermoscopy facilitates the in vivo diagnosis of skin infections and infestations. As such, dermoscopy connects the research fields of dermatologists and entomologists, opening a new research field of 'entodermoscopy'.
OBJECTIVE: To provide an overview on the current applications of entodermoscopy.
METHODS: Systematic review of the English- and German-language literature by searches of Medline, Medscape and abstracts of the 1st World Congress of the International Dermoscopy Society.
RESULTS: Dermoscopic patterns have been described for viral warts,

A 81-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of bloody sputum. Chest radiograph showed an enhanced right pulmonary hilum shadow. Computed tomography (CT) revealed localized bronchiectasis of the right lower lung and a nodule protruding into the bronchus. A parenchymal shadow was also seen distal to the nodule. Transbronchial biopsy revealed a cluster of yeast-like fungi and the bronchial lavage culture showed several olive-black colored colonies on Sabouraud agar. Before culture, we empirically administered fluconazole (400 mg/day) on the assumption of candida infection based on th

Tinea nigra is a superficial mycosis associated with a dematiaceous fungus called Phaeoannellomyces werneckii. It is clinically characterized by asymptomatic non-scaly brown and black macules, the most common localization is the palmar region. Only one bilateral case occurring on the plantar skin and four palmar bilateral cases have been reported. We report the case of a 5-year-old boy presenting two hyperpigmented lesions with an irregular contour in both palmar regions, which appeared three months prior to presentation. Topical treatment with ketoconazole was effective.

A clinical case of a female patient with a black spot on the palm of her left hand is presented. The infection was due to a black fungus identified as Hortaea werneckii, the aetiological agent of tinea nigra palmaris. This infection can be easily diagnosed and it is important to establish the differential diagnosis from other skin pathologies. Normally, the treatment has a successful outcome. In this case, the patient was treated with econazole locally applied during one month, with complete remission of the lesions. In conclusion, the early diagnosis of this disease is very important since th

The genus Cladosporium is restricted to dematiaceous hyphomycetes with a coronate scar type, and Davidiella teleomorphs. In the present study numerous cladosporium-like taxa are treated, and allocated to different genera based on their morphology and DNA phylogeny derived from the LSU nrRNA gene. Several species are introduced in new genera such as Hyalodendriella, Ochrocladosporium, Rachicladosporium, Rhizocladosporium, Toxicocladosporium and Verrucocladosporium. A further new taxon is described in Devriesia (Teratosphaeriaceae). Furthermore, Cladosporium castellanii, the etiological agent of

A 48-year-old white woman presented with the abrupt onset of an asymptomatic but cosmetically distressing eruption on the palm. Physical examination disclosed a 2.5 x 2.0-cm macular brown patch on the central left palm (Figure 1). Potassium hydroxide examination revealed brown-pigmented, septate, branching filamentous hyphae. Clinical and microscopic findings were classic for tinea nigra palmaris. Medical, family, and social history were all unremarkable. The patient applied ciclopirox olamine gel, 0.77% b.i.d. for 3 days. Following this brief therapeutic intervention, the lesion resolved comp

The common cause of skin infections are dermatophytes and opportunistic fungi. Aim of this study was to isolate and identify the fungal agents from clinical samples from patients with different mycoses. Clinical samples from 165 patients were subjected to potassium hydroxide (KOH) examination and culture isolation; causative agents were identified macroscopically and microscopically. All the 165 specimens were KOH positive and 110/165 (66.7%) samples were culture positive. Of these, highest isolation rate was obtained in opportunistic mycoses such as candidiasis (29/29, 100%). Dermatophytes we

Vitiligo is a common, idiopathic, acquired, depigmenting disease characterized by loss of normal melanin pigments in the skin. The most interesting treatment methods for extensive vitiligo involve psoralen plus ultraviolet A (PUVA) therapy and ultraviolet (UV)-B phototherapy, particularly narrow-band UV-B. In this randomized and comparative study, we investigated the safety and efficacy of narrow band ultraviolet B as monotherapy and in combination with topical calcipotriol in the treatment of generalized vitiligo. Of the 40 vitiligo patients enrolled in the study, 15 were treated with the cal

Hortaea werneckii is an environmental dematiaceous fungus found in the halophilic environment. It causes tinea nigra. We report the isolation of H. werneckii from blood and splenic abscess of two patients with acute myelomonocytic leukaemia. H. werneckii grew at room temperature but not at 37 degrees C, it was identified by biochemical tests, growth characteristics and the presence of conspicuous collarette intercalary on dividing yeast cells. The use of specific oligonucleotide primer Hor-F (5'-TGGACACCTTCA TAACTCTTG-3') and Hor-R (5'-TCACAACGCTTAGAGACGG-3') confirmed the two isolates were H.

Tinea nigra is a superficial mycotic infection produced by Hortaea werneckii, formerly known as Phaeoannelomyces werneckii, formerly known as Exophiala werneckii, and Stenella araguata, the latter autochthonous in Venezuela, it was first described and named as Cladosporium castellanii in 1973. The present report describes 12 cases in the period of 1972-2002, diagnosed at the Medical Mycology Section at the Tropical Institute of the Universidad Central de Venezuela, in Caracas. This mycosis is more prevalent among young people, with fair skin, from 3 to 28 years of age, who visited beaches and

Superficial fungal infections arise from a pathogen that is restricted to the stratum corneum, with little or no tissue reaction. In this Seminar, three types of infection will be covered: tinea versicolor, piedra, and tinea nigra. Tinea versicolor is common worldwide and is caused by Malassezia spp, which are human saprophytes that sometimes switch from yeast to pathogenic mycelial form. Malassezia furfur, Malassezia globosa, and Malassezia sympodialis are most closely linked to tinea versicolor. White and black piedra are both common in tropical regions of the world; white piedra is also end

Hortaea werneckii, a black yeast-like hyphomycete that is widely distributed in tropical and subtropical environments, can cause superficial mycotic infection in humans. This fungus was recently isolated from superficial infectious lesions of a guinea pig in Japan. An oligonucleotide primer set specific for Hortaea werneckii was designed on the basis of the internal transcribed spacer regions of the ribosomal DNA (rDNA). Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with this primer set yielded a 306 bp PCR amplicon from only H. werneckii. This primer set did not amplify DNAs of 42 other related dematiaceou

Tinea nigra, a relatively uncommon mycosis caused by Phaeoannelomyces werneckii, is typically seen as an asymptomatic brown or black macule on the hands and feet. We present two cases of tinea nigra in children in São Paulo, Brazil, and alert readers to the potential for confusion with melanocytic lesions.

Tinea infections are among the most common dermatologic conditions throughout the world. To avoid a misdiagnosis, identification of dermatophyte infections requires both a fungal culture on Sabouraud's agar media, and a light microscopic mycologic examination from skin scrapings. Topical antifungals may be sufficient for treatment of tinea corporis and cruris and tinea nigra, and the shaving of hair infected by piedra may also be beneficial. Systemic therapy, however, may be required when the infected areas are large, macerated with a secondary infection, or in immunocompromised individuals. P

There is increasing evidence that primitive progenitors migrate from the bone marrow (BM) via the peripheral circulation to tissue sites where they undergo in situ differentiation to provide a continued source of effector cells, such as eosinophils, during an allergic inflammatory response. To study mechanisms of progenitor cell mobilization in allergic reactions, we investigated fluctuations in the expression of the eotaxin receptor, CC chemokine receptor 3 (CCR3), on CD34+ cells from stable asthmatics following allergen (i.e. antigen) challenge. BM aspirates were taken from seven early respo

Hortaea werneckii, a black yeast and the causative agent of tinea nigra (a superficial type of dermatomycosis), is a human pathogen and is also found in the environment. It is not highly pathogenic but in the last fifteen to twenty years has been isolated from various human and environmental sources in Japan. As far as we know, there has been no report on the isolation of H. werneckii from animals. Recently, we found a case of a guinea pig with dark superficial lesions on the palm and dorsal areas. Cultural and morphological studies of scrapings from the lesion showed that the causative agent

Axillary granular parakeratosis is an alteration of keratin characterized by a thick parakeratotic horny layer with abundant intracellular keratohyalin granules. It was first described in 1991 and since then 32 cases have been reported from USA, Europe and Australia. Lesions may affect intertriginous areas other than the axilla. The disease has apparently not been previously described in Latin America. Three overweight Colombian women were diagnosed with axillary granular parakeratosis. They presented encrusted, hyperkeratotic, hyperpigmented and pruriginous papules and plaques which affected

Tinea nigra is a relatively uncommon dermatiaceous fungal infection, usually caused by Phaeoannellomyces werneckii, that may mimic a melanocytic lesion. We describe the value of epiluminescent dermoscopy of tinea nigra plantaris compared with other common diagnostic tools and procedures available (clinical appearance, potassium hydroxide [KOH], culture, culture mount preparation, and biopsy). A case of tinea nigra plantaris was evaluated clinically, microscopically with KOH, and dermatoscopically. Dermatoscopic findings were evaluated according to the Stolz system.
