Advanced abdominal pregnancy secondary to tubal pregnancy: a rare case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: A pregnant woman was found to have a left tubal pregnancy on transabdominal ultrasound (9 weeks 5 days by CRL). However, she refused any treatment and left the hospital. Nearly 3 months later, this woman was admitted to the emergency room due to severe abdominal pain. The emergent ultrasound scan revealed an abdominal ectopic pregnancy at 22 weeks’ gestation. The placenta covered the left abdominal wall and was implanted into the omentum, intestinal wall, and bladder wall. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) confirmed the diagnosis. The location and relationship of the placenta to its

Abdominal Pregnancy in the Right Uterosacral Ligament: A Novel Case Report.

Abdominal pregnancy is a rare type of ectopic pregnancy, accounting for about 1% of ectopic pregnancies. Early diagnosis of abdominal pregnancy is challenging and may lead to serious complications. This article reports a case of a patient who was 58 days postmenopausal and presented with acute lower abdominal pain. The patient's preoperative ultrasound suggested ectopic pregnancy. Laparoscopy and therapeutic surgery were performed. During the surgical procedure, the gestational sac was identified in the right uterosacral ligament, and the gestational tissue was successfully removed with minima

Expectant management of advanced abdominal pregnancy with successful outcome: A case report and literature review.

Abdominal pregnancy is a rare form of ectopic pregnancy associated with increased maternal and perinatal risks. In low-resource countries, diagnostic challenges complicate management. Prompt diagnosis requires a high level of suspicion. We report a 34-year-old, G3P1A+1SA, referred as a suspected abdominal pregnancy. Despite several ultrasounds and clinical signs, the diagnosis was delayed until 29 weeks' gestation with a live fetus. She was managed conservatively. A live infant was successfully extracted via laparotomy at 32 weeks of gestation. This case highlights diagnostic delays and diffic

Lithopedion in a 70-year-old woman: incidental finding in the greater omentum.

Lithopedion is a rare outcome of ectopic pregnancy in which a nonviable fetus undergoes calcification and is retained within the abdominal cavity, often remaining asymptomatic for decades. Some 330 cases have been reported in the medical literature. While modern imaging techniques and early surgical intervention have made the condition extremely rare, it persists in populations with limited healthcare access. We present the case of a 70-year-old woman undergoing omentoplasty for postoperative mediastinitis, during which a lithopedion of approximately 12- to 13-weeks' gestational age was incide

Rare Presentation of a Viable Secondary Abdominal Ectopic Pregnancy in the Rudimentary Horn of a Bicornuate Uterus: A Case Report.

An advanced abdominal in a rudimentary horn pregnancy is rare and difficult to diagnose, especially in late gestation. Accurate early recognition, multidisciplinary planning, and preoperative vascular interventions are critical. With precise surgical management, even in high-risk scenarios, favorable maternal and neonatal outcomes can be achieved despite significant complications.

Risk factors and imaging features of a rudimentary horn pregnancy: A case report and literature review.

A rudimentary horn is a type of congenital uterine anomaly associated with a unicornuate uterus. Rudimentary horn pregnancies (RHPs) are extremely rare and the majority of cases result in second trimester rupture necessitating emergent laparotomy with associated high maternal morbidity and delivery of a previable fetus. We report the case of a 33-year-old G5P0131 female who presented at 15 weeks and 4 days gestational age with pelvic and back pain and imaging favoring an abdominal pregnancy. The patient underwent an exploratory laparotomy with left salpingectomy and excision of an unruptured e

Lithopedion in a 74-year-old woman: a rare sequela of undiagnosed abdominal pregnancy - case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Lithopedion (Greek for "stone baby") is an extremely rare complication of undiagnosed abdominal pregnancy where a dead fetus becomes calcified and retained for decades. This phenomenon demonstrates both a unique obstetric event and global disparities in prenatal care access. CASE PRESENTATION: A 74-year-old post-menopausal woman presented with vague abdominal discomfort. Imaging revealed a calcified mass resembling a fetal skeleton in the pelvic cavity. Her obstetric history indicated a pregnancy several decades earlier with reported intrauterine fetal death that

Primary splenic pregnancy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal pregnancy refers to the implantation of a fertilized egg in the abdominal cavity outside of the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries; splenic pregnancy is a rare type of abdominal pregnancy. CASE PRESENTATION: Our patient was a 24-year-old Han Chinese female individual who presented to our hospital with left lower abdominal pain for 12 days. The patient complained of 59 days of amenorrhoea and a small amount of vaginal bleeding 2 weeks earlier, and had previously undergone tubal recanalization for "bilateral tubal obstruction." There was no other significant medical hist

Open abdomen negative pressure wound therapy for intractable hemorrhage in advanced abdominal pregnancy: a case report.

Advanced abdominal pregnancies are rare in obstetrics. They have the potential for implantation of the placenta on highly vascular intra-abdominal structures leading to morbidity and mortality. This report presents the case of a 32-year-old woman who underwent delivery at 31 weeks of gestation of a heterotopic twin pregnancy (intrauterine and intra-abdominal). Delivery was complicated by life-threatening hemorrhage of the placental bed, which was managed with abdominal packing and open abdomen negative pressure wound therapy for temporary abdominal closure. She subsequently underwent primary a

Detection of a lithopedion coexisting with a 12-week viable intrauterine pregnancy: a rare case report.

INTRODUCTION: A lithopedion ('stone baby') is a rare complication of abdominal pregnancy from calcification of a deceased fetus. Coexistence with a viable intrauterine pregnancy is extraordinarily rare. CASE PRESENTATION: A 27-year-old lady (G2P1L1) with a history of cesarean section presented with acute abdominal pain at 12 weeks of gestation. Ultrasonography revealed a single viable intrauterine fetus and a complex extrauterine mass containing calcified fetal structures with posterior acoustic shadowing suggestive of a dead fetus corresponding to 22 weeks of gestation, consistent with litho

Abdominal complete hydatidiform mole following uterine evacuation: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Hydatidiform mole (HM) is a form of gestational trophoblastic disease that most commonly develops within the uterine cavity. Ectopic hydatidiform mole is exceedingly rare, and abdominal implantation represents one of its rarest presentations. Due to nonspecific clinical manifestations and the lack of characteristic imaging features, abdominal HM poses significant diagnostic challenges and is frequently diagnosed only after surgical exploration. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 24-year-old woman with a history of polycystic ovary syndrome who conceived following ovulation

Near-term extrauterine pregnancy secondary to uterine rupture in a mare.

Uterine rupture is an uncommon but life-threatening complication of equine reproduction, typically associated with dystocia, uterine torsion, fetal manipulation, or hydrops. Tears may occur in either the uterine horns or body, although involvement of the ventral uterine body is rare. This case report describes an 11-year-old Arabian mare at 350 days of gestation that developed abdominal pregnancy secondary to uterine torsion and full-thickness ventral uterine rupture, resulting in fetal death and the free presence of the fetus within the peritoneal cavity. Surgical removal of the fetus and pri

Ruptured rudimentary horn pregnancy mimicking abdominal gestation: A case report.

A unicornuate uterus with a rudimentary horn, resulting from incomplete development of one of the Müllerian ducts, is a rare anomaly seen in about 0.4% of women and carries a high risk of ectopic pregnancy and uterine rupture, particularly when the horn is noncommunicating. A 27-year-old primigravida at 16 weeks' gestation presented with symptoms of hypovolemic shock and peritonitis. Abdominopelvic ultrasound demonstrated an empty uterine cavity with a viable extrauterine fetus, leading to a presumed diagnosis of abdominal pregnancy, and emergency laparotomy confirmed a ruptured pregnancy in a

Rare Ectopic Pregnancies, Cases, Confusions, and Clues.

Ectopic pregnancies are implanted outside the normal location within the uterus; mostly (about 95%) within the fallopian tube but might also rarely be seen within abnormal locations in the uterus, in the ovaries, peritoneal cavity, or even retroperitoneally. These pregnancies are particularly challenging to diagnose. The outcome in most ectopic pregnancies is guarded unless an early diagnosis is made and dealt with by an experienced multidisciplinary team. The management of rare ectopic pregnancies is further complicated by difficulties in diagnosis, delay in diagnosis, and greater risk of ble

Abdominal Pregnancy at Advanced Gestational Age in Lagos, Nigeria.

Abdominal ectopic pregnancy is an uncommon form of ectopic pregnancy with few cases reported in Nigeria. We present a case report of abdominal ectopic pregnancy with haemoperitoneum in an unbooked multipara at advanced gestational age. She subsequently had an emergency exploratory laparotomy and right salpingectomy. Diagnosis of this condition can be challenging due to non-specific clinical symptoms, while definitive management can also pose a challenge due to the site of placental attachment.

Third trimester abdominal pregnancy presenting as partial small bowel obstruction in a resource-limited setting: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal pregnancy is a rare and potentially life-threatening form of ectopic gestation in which the embryo implants within the peritoneal cavity. Diagnosis is often delayed, especially in low-resource settings, owing to limited access to early imaging and nonspecific clinical signs. While gastrointestinal symptoms may occur, intestinal obstruction is an extremely rare presentation of abdominal pregnancy. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of an 18-year-old African Black primigravida who presented to our facility at approximately 30 weeks' gestation with decreased fetal moveme

Retroperitoneal Ectopic Pregnancy Involving the Renal-Adrenal Region.

Abdominal ectopic pregnancy is a rare and potentially life-threatening form of extrauterine gestation. Retroperitoneal implantation is exceptionally uncommon, and involvement of the renal-adrenal region has been only rarely described. We report the case of a 43-year-old woman who presented with acute abdominal pain, abnormal uterine bleeding, and a positive pregnancy test. Initial imaging demonstrated abundant intraperitoneal fluid without evidence of an intrauterine or adnexal gestation. Following the onset of hemodynamic instability, emergency exploratory laparotomy was performed, precluding

Advanced primary abdominal pregnancy with a live birth: a case report.

OBJECTIVES: Advanced primary abdominal pregnancy, an extremely rare condition, poses diagnostic challenges and carries a risk of serious maternal and perinatal complications. In the absence of evidence-based protocols, current management approaches are predominantly guided by anecdotal reports and individual clinical judgment. We report a case of primary advanced abdominal pregnancy in a primigravida. CASE PRESENTATION: A 26-year-old asymptomatic woman at 31 + 6/7 weeks' gestation was referred for routine third-trimester ultrasonography, which revealed a non-gravid uterus, a viable extrauteri
