Trichosporon cutaneum (Trichosporon asahii) infection mimicking hand eczema in a patient with leukemia.

Trichosporon Cutaneum is a yeast-like fungus that causes white piedra and onychomycosis. Recently, it has also been recognized as an opportunistic pathogen in immunocompromised hosts. We describe a 64-year-old woman who developed a superficial Trichosporon infection mimicking hand eczema during chemotherapy for her chronic myelocytic leukemia. To our knowledge, no cases of superficial infection like this one have previously been reported. This case suggests that careful examination is required in diagnosing Trichosporon infection in immunocompromised hosts, because the infection can be invasiv

[Cutaneous manifestations during disseminated trichosporonosis in an AIDS patient].

BACKGROUND: Trichosporon beigelii, causal agent of white piedra can cause disseminated infection in immunodepressed subjects. Systemic infections due to this pathogen have been reported mainly in neutropenic patients and rarely in AIDS patients. CASE REPORT: A 36-year-old HIV+ man from Senegal was hospitalized for fever and meningoencephalitis associated with skin lesions. T. beigelii was isolated from skin biopsies and cerebrospinal fluid cultures. The patients was treated with amphotericin B with regression of the skin lesions. The diagnosis of disseminated T. beigelii infection was retaine

[White piedra. Report of a case].

The most common superficial mycosis caused by Trichosporon beigelii is white piedra. We report a 18 years old male that had in several hairs of the scalp, white-yellowish nodules of 1 mm diameter, agglutinated or forming chains, even forming threads, with a greasy aspect. Trichosporon beigelii was identified in cultures. Oral and topical antimycotics were prescribed and the patient was lost from follow up.

[White genital piedra].

White piedra is a rare hair infection of man and certain animals, caused by the widespread Trichosporon fungi. The infection is characterized clinically by whitish, soft and easily removable coating of the hair shafts; however, the shafts may be destroyed by the pathogens invading at localized points. While all body hair may be affected, the pubic hair is most frequently affected. This paper is the first report genital white piedra in a 34-year-old Central European man. In all, 22 cases have been described world-wide in young men ranging in age from 20 to 40 years. Only 2 men, aged 42 and 53 y

Trichosporon on humans: a practical account.

Six human pathogenic Trichosporon species are described with respect to criteria for routine identification, epidemiology and clinical origin: T. ovoides, T. inkin, T. asahii, T. asteroides (Fissuricella filamenta), T. cutaneum, and T. mucoides. These species are causative agents of white piedra and cutaneous infections and are involved in systemic, localized or disseminated mycoses, particularly in patients with underlying haematological malignancy. Data on in vitro sensitivity to antifungal drugs are provided.

White piedra and Trichosporon species in equatorial Africa. I. History and clinical aspects: an analysis of 449 superficial inguinal specimens.

White piedra is a hair infection characterized by nodules composed of fungal elements which envelop the hair shaft. Classically, this infection was considered to be produced by an asexual yeast-like fungus, Trichosporon beigelii. At present, in accordance with studies carried out previously, this species is subdivided into six newly defined distinct species (T. asahii, T. ovoides, T. inkin, T. mucoides, T. asteroides and T. cutaneum), all belonging to the class Basidiomycetes. Although widespread, white piedra has not previously been described in tropical regions of Africa. The present study,

White piedra and Trichosporon species in equatorial Africa. II. Clinical and mycological associations: an analysis of 449 superficial inguinal specimens.

Eighty-one of 449 Gabonese female patients examined were found to be positive for genitopubic white piedra. The association with trichobacteriosis is frequent (53 cases), and mostly seen with inguinal intertrigo. Fifty-two strains belonging to the genus Trichosporon were isolated from genital hairs as well as from inguinal intertrigo lesions. These strains were identified in accordance with previously defined morphological and biochemical criteria. Three species were recognized: T. mucoides (25 strains), T. inkin (20 strains) and T. asahii (seven strains). Their macroscopic and microscopic mor

White piedra and Trichosporon species in equatorial Africa. III. Identification of Trichosporon species by slide agglutination test.

Fifty-two Trichosporon strains isolated from Gabonese female patients 15-60 years, were studied. The identity of these strains was established by two different methods: the method proposed by Guého et al. (1992), based on mycological criteria, and a slide agglutination method performed with monospecific antisera prepared in our laboratory. The final results show a perfect correlation between the two methods, which allowed us to identify 25 strains of T. mucoides, 21 strains of T. inkin and seven strains of T. asahii. The results of the agglutination tests performed with 24-h-old subcultures gr

A new Brevibacterium sp. isolated from infected genital hair of patients with white piedra.

A new aerobic gram-positive non-sporeforming bacillus has been isolated from infected genital hair of patients with white piedra in association with Trichosporon beigelii. This species has been characterised morphologically, nutritionally, by DNA base composition, cell-wall analysis and cellular fatty-acid profile on the basis of 14 isolates. The G+C content of DNA is 63.05 mol%. Cell walls possess meso-diaminopimelic acid (Type IV) and the sugars glucose, galactose, xylose and ribose; mycolic acids are not present. The species has a distinct colonial and microscopic morphology, is strongly pr

Disseminated infection with Trichosporon beigelii. Report of a case and review of the cutaneous and histologic manifestations.

BACKGROUND: Trichosporonosis is a potentially life-threatening disseminated infection with Trichosporon beigelii, the causative agent of the white piedra. Systemic infection by this fungus has been most frequently described in immunocompromised hosts with neutropenia, but one case has been reported in the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome setting. We report a second case of trichosporonosis in a patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and review the clinical and histologic characteristics of cutaneous involvement with this opportunistic fungal pathogen. OBSERVATIONS: Trichosporonosis

Neotypification of the genus Trichosporon.

The currently accepted type species of the genus Trichosporon Behrend is T. beigelii. This species has formerly been regarded as identical to T. cutaneum. However, these fungi are now known to represent separate species with different ecology. The first species described in Trichosporon was T. ovoides, an agent of human white piedra. A neotype strain is designated for this species, while a lectotype strain is indicated for T. cutaneum. The name T. beigelii is considered as doubtful and consequently cannot be maintained.

White piedra.

A 39-year-old Thai man had eczema on the left groin accompanied by asymptomatic white nodules on the public hair for two weeks. Examination with the Wood's lamp, microscopic examination, culture and biochemical testing showed organisms compatible with Trichosporon beigelii. The diagnosis of "White Piedra" was made, and this is the first case of White Piedra to be reported in Thailand.

Cepholosporium acremonium. A new strain of fungus causing white piedra.

A strain of fungus (CZ408) was isolated from white piedra of a female child. Mycological identification showed that it is the first case in the world. Asymptomatic white nodules were noted on the hair of the scalp, and they were distributed irregularly along the shaft 4-10 cm from the scalp. The nodules, hard, not easily broken or removed, consist of hyphae, spores and metabolic materials around the hair. Oral antimycotic drugs are effective in treating this disease.

Fungal infection as a cause of skin disease in the eastern province of Saudi Arabia: prevailing fungi and pattern of infection.

A total of 4,294 clinically suspected cases of dermatomycoses belonging to 26 different nationalities were examined between April 1984 and April 1988. Fungi were demonstrated in routine potassium hydroxide/dimethyl sulfoxide mount in 3,814 cases (88.8%) and the etiology was determined by culture in 2,458 cases (57.2%). Tinea versicolor was the predominant fungal infection (30.9% of all infections). Onychomycosis and paronychia ranked second in prevalence (16.8%). Candidal onychomycosis was the most common type of infection. Scalp ringworm among children ranked third (15.3%), Microsporum canis

White piedra: ultrastructure and a new microecological aspect.

White piedra or trichosporosis is a superficial mycosis of the hair shaft, caused by the yeast Trichosporon beigelii; it has been found in all continents and may involve the hair of any part of the body. We report a case of white piedra on the hairs of the inguinal fold with ultrastructural studies. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the nodules have the same morphological aspects as the fungus in culture (hyphae and arthrospores) except for the presence of a cementant substance. By scanning electron microscopy the elimination of spores was seen on the nodule surface. Interestingly s

White piedra: evidence for a synergistic infection.

To determine the relative roles of coryneform bacteria and Trichosporon beigelii in the pathogenesis of genital white piedra, scrotal hair from 10 subjects was studied. Hairs were examined by light microscopy to determine the relative proportions of each organism, and were also cultured for coryneforms and yeast. Histologically, hair nodules from five out of nine cases showed a mixture of yeasts and bacteria, four had bacteria alone, and none showed yeast alone. Five strains of T. beigelii were cultured, two strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and 22 strains of coryneforms. The isolates were t
