Emerging trends in pediatric candidemia: mapping the rise in Candida parapsilosis incidence and antifungal resistance in Turkey.

Candidemia is emerging as a significant concern in children, particularly among those with underlying conditions like malignancies or prematurity. The interpretation of epidemiological data on candidemias and their antifungal resistance plays a vital role in aiding diagnosis and guiding clinicians in treatment decisions. From 2014 to 2021, a retrospective analysis was conducted in İstanbul, Turkey; comparing Candida albicans and non-albicans (NAC) spp in both surviving and deceased groups. Furthermore, an examination of Candida parapsilosis and other species was performed, assessing various cl

Nanorobots to Treat Candida albicans Infection.

Candida albicans is an opportunistic fungal pathogen of humans. It causes a variety of infections ranging from superficial mucocutaneous conditions to severe systemic diseases that result in substantial morbidity and mortality. This pathogen frequently forms biofilms resistant to antifungal drugs and the host immune system, leading to treatment failures. Recent research has demonstrated the potential of nanorobots to penetrate biological barriers and disrupt fungal biofilms. In this perspective paper, we provide a brief overview of recent breakthroughs in nanorobots for candidiasis treatment a

Candida auris: Understanding the dynamics of C. auris infection versus colonization.

Candida auris is a pathogen of growing public health concern worldwide. However, risk factors contributing to C. auris infection in patients colonized with C. auris remain unclear. Understanding these risk factors is crucial to prevent colonization-to-infection transition and devise effective preventive strategies. This study aimed to investigate risk factors associated with C. auris infection compared to colonization. The study included 97 patients who acquired laboratory-confirmed C. auris in either matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry or V

Phylogenomic analysis of the Candida auris-Candida haemuli clade and related taxa in the Metschnikowiaceae, and proposal of thirteen new genera, fifty-five new combinations and nine new species.

Candida is a polyphyletic genus of asexually reproducing yeasts in the Saccharomycotina with more than 400 species that occur in almost all families of the subclass and its name is strongly connected with the infectious disease candidiasis. During the last two decades, approximately half of the Candida species have been reassigned into more than 36 already existing genera and 14 newly proposed genera, but the polyphyletic feature of the genus largely remained. Candida auris is an important, globally emerging opportunistic pathogen that has caused life-threatening outbreaks in healthcare facili

Mechanistic insights into antifungal potential of Alexidine dihydrochloride and hexachlorophene in Candida albicans: a drug repurposing approach.

Candida albicans has been listed in the critical priority group by the WHO in 2022 depending upon its contribution in invasive candidiasis and increased resistance to conventional drugs. Drug repurposing offers an efficient, rapid, and cost-effective solution to develop alternative therapeutics against pathogenic microbes. Alexidine dihydrochloride (AXD) and hexachlorophene (HCP) are FDA approved anti-cancer and anti-septic drugs, respectively. In this study, we have shown antifungal properties of AXD and HCP against the wild type (reference strain) and clinical isolates of C. albicans. The mi

Microbicidal Polymer Nanoparticles Containing Clotrimazole for Treatment of Vulvovaginal Candidiasis.

Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) alters the innate cervicovaginal immunity, which provides an important barrier against viruses and other infections. The incidence of this disease has not decreased in the last 30 years, so effective treatments are still needed. Nanoparticles (NPs) of cellulose acetate phthalate (CAP) and clotrimazole (CLZ) were prepared by the emulsification-diffusion method. NPs were characterized using dynamic light scattering, atomic force microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry; their release profile was determined by the dialysis bag technique and mucoadhesion was

Antifungal and antibiofilm activities of flavonoids against Candida albicans: Focus on 3,2'-dihydroxyflavone as a potential therapeutic agent.

Effective management of microbial biofilms holds significance within food and medical environments. Candida albicans, an opportunistic fungus, forms mucosal biofilms closely linked to candidiasis and drug-resistant infections due to their drug tolerance. Morphologic change from yeast to filamentous cells is a key virulence factor and a prerequisite for biofilm development. This study investigated the anti-fungal and antibiofilm activities of 20 flavonoids against C. albicans. With their known antioxidant capabilities, flavonoids hold promise in combating infections associated with biofilms. Am
