The Clinical and Diagnostic Spectrum of Esophagitis Dissecans Superficialis: A Comprehensive Retrospective Case Series and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Esophagitis dissecans superficialis (EDS), also known as sloughing esophagitis, is a rare and likely underdiagnosed desquamative disorder characterized by the exfoliation of large fragments of the esophageal squamous epithelium. Despite its dramatic endoscopic appearance, it is frequently misidentified as candidal or corrosive esophagitis. This study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the clinical spectrum, diagnostic hallmarks, and therapeutic outcomes of EDS through a Moroccan retrospective case series and a literature review. METHODS: We conducted a retrospecti

Candida albicans in oral squamous cell carcinoma: a review of mechanistic pathways and clinical translational strategies.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) develops within a complex mucosal ecosystem in which microbial dysbiosis, epithelial injury, inflammation, and immune remodeling interact with established carcinogenic exposures. Although Candida albicans has repeatedly been associated with OSCC and oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs), its causal and translational significance remains uncertain. This review critically evaluates clinical, microbiological, mechanistic, and translational evidence, with particular attention to the distinction between association, biological plausibility, and causal infe

Risk of skin and subcutaneous diseases in paediatric HIV-exposed uninfected individuals in the USA.

HIV-exposed uninfected (HEU) children experience increased early-life morbidity, but dermatological outcomes have not been well studied. In this retrospective cohort study of 262 HEU individuals matched to 499 HIV-unexposed uninfected controls, HEU participants had significantly higher prevalence of candidiasis, eczema, seborrhoeic dermatitis and skin/soft tissue infections. These findings highlight dermatological disease as an under-recognized contributor to HEU morbidity and underscore the need to explore underlying mechanisms.

Systematic analysis of echinocandin-associated adverse reactions using the FAERS database: identification of unique DRESS and resistance signals.

AIM: This pharmacovigilance study analyzed echinocandin-related adverse events (AEs) using the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database to identify agent-specific safety signals and inform clinical decision-making. METHODS: AE reports were extracted from FAERS covering Q1 2004 to Q4 2025. Four disproportionality algorithms-reporting odds ratio (ROR), proportional reporting ratio (PRR), information component (IC025), and empirical Bayesian geometric mean (EBGM05)-were applied. Positive signals were defined when all four methods yielded positive results. RESULTS: A total of 5,298 ca

Green synthesis of a manganese oxide-selenium nanocomposite using watermelon peel waste with antimicrobial and mosquitocidal activities.

The present study demonstrates the successful green biosynthesis of a manganese oxide-selenium nanocomposite (MnO2-Se NC) using watermelon peel waste extract, providing a sustainable approach for valorizing agro-industrial waste into a multifunctional nanomaterial. The biofabricated nanocomposite was characterized by UV-Vis, XRD, FTIR, DLS and TEM analysis. TEM analysis revealed predominantly spherical nanoparticles with an average size of approximately 55 nm, while UV-Vis spectra displayed two distinct absorption peaks at 266 and 300 nm, confirming successful nanocomposite formation. The MnO2

Metschnikowia okinawaensis sp. nov. and Metschnikowia ryukyuensis sp. nov., two novel yeast species isolated from flowers and young fruits in Okinawa, Japan.

Two novel yeast species belonging to the genus Metschnikowia were isolated from flowers and young fruits in Okinawa, Japan. Five strains (JCM 35539, JCM 36740T, JCM 36743, JCM 36744, and JCM 36747) and four strains (JCM 35542, JCM 35544T, JCM 36745, and JCM 38279) were repeatedly isolated from samples collected over 2-3 y. Because BLAST analysis of D1/D2 large subunit ribosomal DNA sequences did not clearly resolve their phylogenetic placement and intragenomic polymorphisms were detected in the internal transcribed spacer region, their relationships were further assessed by whole-genome phylog

Multifunctional NaNbO3: Photocatalytic Degradation of Methylene Blue and Intrinsic Antimicrobial Activity against Enterococcus faecalis and Candida albicans.

In this paper, sodium niobate (NaNbO3) was synthesized by the microwave-assisted hydrothermal method at 150 °C for 70 min, followed by calcination at 550 °C for 2 h. X-ray diffraction revealed the coexistence of orthorhombic P21ma and Pbma phases, while scanning electron microscopy showed a one-dimensional rod-like morphology with an average diameter of about 200 nm. The material exhibited a specific surface area of 5.45 m2/g, a pore volume of 0.0269 cm3/g, and an average pore diameter of 20.52 nm. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated the presence of defect-related species, while photolu

Vaginal formulations selectively target Lactobacillus iners and Candida spp. while preserving Lactobacillus crispatus.

Vaginal eubiosis is associated with low bacterial diversity and Lactobacillus crispatus dominance, whereas Lactobacillus iners often persists after antibiotics. We evaluated complementary approaches to inhibit L. iners and Candida spp. while preserving L. crispatus. Carbohydrate screening of five strains per Lactobacillus species showed insufficient selectivity. Oleic acid showed the widest susceptibility differential: minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations were 0.4/0.8 mM for L. iners versus 1.6 to > 6.4 mM for L. crispatus. After 24 h, a mixture of 0.25% oligomeric proanthocyanid

The impact of beer-spoiling yeast on flavour development in non-alcoholic beers.

No- and low-alcohol beverages reflect a commercially important and rapidly expanding market. These products represent a unique environment that differs nutritionally and environmentally from standard product types and are generally regarded as being at higher risk of spoilage. Beer-spoiling yeasts represent a particular risk within the brewing chain, typically impacting the sensorial properties of the final beverage. However, little is known about their effects in no- and low-alcohol products. This study aimed to determine the impacts of beer-spoiling yeasts on the flavour profiles of non-alco

UHPLC/MS-MS Profiling, Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Properties of Atriplex halimus L. and Marrubium deserti De Noé Extracts: In Vitro and In Silico.

This study aims to evaluate the chemical composition and both in vitro and in silico antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of Atriplex halimus L. and Marrubium deserti De Noé, collected from Algeria. UHPLC‑MS/MS analysis revealed that the major compounds in the tested extracts are protocatechuic aldehyde, caffeic acid, cynaroside, and cosmosiin. The data demonstrated that the dichloromethane fraction was richer in polyphenols and flavonoids than the aqueous fraction. The extracts exhibited greater antioxidant capacity against ABTS compared to DPPH and FRAP assays. Antimicrobial activity was

Tight junction suppression by candidalysin promotes gut-to-blood dissemination of Candida albicans.

BACKGROUND: The commensal fungus Candida albicans, a natural inhabitant of the human gut, can transition to a pathogenic state and disseminate into the blood. Disruption of the intestinal mucosal barrier, particularly through the impairment of epithelial cell integrity and intercellular junctions, is a critical step in this dissemination process. While candidalysin is a pore-forming cytolytic peptide encoded within ECE1 (extent of cell elongation 1 gene), its relationship to the abundance and organization of specific intestinal tight-junction proteins during dissemination remains incompletely

Elevated in vitro activity of ibrexafungerp against azole-resistant Candida isolates from Vulvovaginal Candidiasis (VVC): a multicentric study from India.

Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is complicated by an increase in non-albicans Candida (NAC) species, biofilm formation and rising fluconazole resistance, limiting the effectiveness of conventional therapies. Ibrexafungerp, a newer antifungal, offers a novel therapeutic option owing to its distinct mechanism of action against azole-resistant isolates. A total of 400 isolates from four centres (PGIMER, Chandigarh; RIMS, Imphal; BHU, Varanasi and MGMMC, Indore) were included in this study. Species identification was performed by MALDI-TOF MS, and antifungal susceptibility testing (AFST) as per Cli
