The concentration of human serum superoxide dismutase-1 (hSOD-1) containing copper and zinc ions were measured by radioimmunoassay healthy nonpregnant women, 15 normal pregnant women, 15 patients with mild to moderate hypertension (MMHSP) and 15 with severe hypertensive syndrome of pregnancy (SHSP). In Ethiopia, pre-eclampsia/eclampsia was reported to be uncommon. A clinical analysis of 327 (4.8%) pre-eclamptic and 21 (0.3%) eclamptic patients in 6766 deliveries at Yekatit 12 Hospital, Addis Ababa was made. Out of 327 pre-eclamptics, there were 52 (15.9%) cases of mild, 142 (43.4%) cases of moderate and 133 (40.7%) cases of severe pre-eclampsia. The authors studied 74 pregnant women with preeclampsia presenting various degrees of gravity. The activity of alkaline phosphatase was determined cytochemically in the leucocytes. It was established that the activity of the enzyme was unchanged in mild preeclampsia and diminished progressively with advancement of the pathological process, compared with the respective values of normally progressing pregnancy at the same gestational period. A cytochemical criterium is proposed for differentiating the mild form of preeclampsia form the moderate form of preeclampsia.

This paper reported the determination of urine E3 in 326 normal pregnancies from 28 to 41 gestational weeks, and 80 abnormal pregnancies by E3-125I-RIA. The results showed that E3 levels in normal pregnancies increased with advance of gestational weeks with their peaks at the 38th week and decreased gradually after the 40th week. Between 1978 and 1983 1240 singleton placentas were examined macroscopically and histologically. In 82 cases (6.6%) a "chronic placentitis" was diagnosed. The pathognomonic inflammatory foci were localized within the placental villi. The vast majority showed mixtures of both fibrohistiocytes and lymphoid cells, which were occasionally interspersed with plasma-cells. Polystyrene tubes were activated by adsorption of placental basement collagen (Type IV collagen). Binding of maternal immunoglobulin from serum samples to immobilized collagen was detected with 125I-labeled Antihuman IgG.
