Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are one of the leading causes of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of each HDP in France and to study their associations. All pregnant women who delivered in France between 2010 and 2018 were included in a cohort and followed during their pregnancy and 6 weeks of postpartum. Each HDP occurring during the follow-up was identified. Prevalence of each HDP and cumulative incidence by gestational age were estimated. Incidence rate ratio (IRR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for preeclampsia among women with pre

Identification of pregnancies at risk of preterm birth (PTB), the leading cause of newborn deaths, remains challenging given the syndromic nature of the disease. We report a longitudinal multi-omics study coupled with a DREAM challenge to develop predictive models of PTB. The findings indicate that whole-blood gene expression predicts ultrasound-based gestational ages in normal and complicated pregnancies (r = 0.83) and, using data collected before 37 weeks of gestation, also predicts the delivery date in both normal pregnancies (r = 0.86) and those with spontaneous preterm birth (r = 0.75). BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Anaemia has been reported to be associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, especially when presenting in the last trimester. In addition to prevalent common causes of anaemia in pregnant women, poor replenishment of iron stores after a pregnancy event is specific to women with higher birth orders. Anaemic women presenting in the third trimester are more prone to maternal complications such as infections, toxaemia, antepartum haemorrhage, cardiac failure, pre-eclampsia as well as fetal hazards too such as low birth weight, pre-term deliveries, developmental anomalies,

OBJECTIVES: Pregnancy complicated by pre-eclampsia (PE) and hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelets (HELLP) syndrome is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular (CV) diseases later in life. Subclinical cardiac alterations precede eminent CV diseases. Speckle-tracking echocardiography (STE) is an effective method to assess subclinical myocardial dysfunction. We performed a myocardial speckle tracking study to investigate the prevalence of subclinical myocardial dysfunction in former PE patients (with and without HELLP syndrome) compared to normotensive women affected by

PURPOSE: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy are still a leading cause of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality worldwide. Women with a history of preeclampsia have an increased risk for future cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease, renal disease as well as diabetes mellitus. There is little knowledge on postpartum risk management. The aim of this study was to assess follow-up care for patients after pre-eclampsia or HELLP syndrome.
METHODS: This questionnaire-based cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the current recommendations of obstetricians in Austria regarding follow-up

Pregnancy at advanced maternal age (age >35 years old) is considered a risk factor for adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes. Yet, pregnancies of advanced maternal age have become more prevalent over the last few decades. Possible maternal complications of pregnancy at age 35 or older include increased risk of spontaneous miscarriage, preterm labor, gestational diabetes mellitus, pre-eclampsia, stillbirth, chromosomal abnormalities, and cesarean delivery. Possible adverse fetal outcomes include infants small for gestational age and intrauterine growth restrictions, low Apgar score, admission

Preeclampsia is a disease exclusive to pregnancy and the immediate postpartum period, occurring in 4.6% of pregnancies worldwide. Preeclampsia and other gestational hypertensive disorders can affect any pregnant woman. The consequences of developing this disease can lead to severe maternal and neonatal morbidities and mortalities, including fetal growth restriction, placental abruption, preterm birth, stillbirth, and maternal death. When pregnant women recover, they are at higher risk of long-term complications such as hypertension, stroke, heart failure, renal disease, and Alzheimer disease.

BACKGROUND: Preconception exposures have been associated with adverse pregnancy, birth and postpartum outcomes. However, the reports, statements and guidelines of national and international health organisations vary in what they recommend individuals should monitor, avoid, reduce or practise in the preconception period.
OBJECTIVES: To synthesise and evaluate the evidence across systematic reviews for associations between exposures before conception and adverse pregnancy, birth and postpartum outcomes.
DATA SOURCES: MEDLINE, Embase, Epistemonikos (to May 2020) and reference lists of included

Pregnancy, labor and childbirth are accompanied by excessive oxidative aggression. The excessive formation of free radicals [reactive oxygen species (ROS), reactive nitrogen species (RNS), chlorine reactive species (CRS)] causes cellular oxidative damage, which can be scavenged by enzymatic or non-enzymatic antioxidants in normal healthy pregnancy, physiological labor and delivery without any complications. An imbalance between the pro-oxidant and antioxidant factors may lead to oxidative stress, which contributes to the development of many diseases. This oxidative aggression can be a precurso

INTRODUCTION: Pregnancy may be associated to unique retinal disorders and is associated to worsening of retinal disease that also occurs in non-pregnant females. We report a case of chorioretinopathy caused by pre-eclampsia associated to HELLP (Hemolysis-Elevated-Liver enzymes and Low Platelet count) syndrome.
METHODS: Multimodal Imaging features of HELLP syndrome-related hypertensive chorioretinopathy including retinography, Spectral Domain-Optical Coherence Tomography (SD-OCT), Fluorescein angiography (FA), Indocyanine-green angiography (ICG) along with OCT-angiography (OCTA) are presented

The purpose of this study was to determine whether maternal urinary phthalate metabolite concentrations are associated with the development of higher blood pressure or pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH). Participants were women without chronic hypertension who enrolled in The Infant Development and the Environment Study, a prospective pregnancy cohort conducted at four U.S. academic medical centers from 2010-2012. Prenatal records were reviewed to obtain blood pressure measurements and diagnoses of PIH (gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, eclampsia, and HELLP syndrome, defined as hemolys

OBJECTIVES: Maternal and fetal complications can occur in pregnant kidney transplant recipients. Since these are high-risk pregnancies, they require a multidisciplinary follow-up to prematurely detect adverse events. Identifying factors that would affect fetal, maternal and graft outcomes is essential to further stratify the risk of pregnant kidney transplant recipients.
METHODS: All pregnancies in kidney transplant recipients followed in a single center for 30 years were included. Data included previous transplant information and blood and urine tests performed before pregnancy. Impact of gr

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Most spontaneous hepatic rupture cases are associated with a pregnancy-induced hypertensive disorder like preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome. Although it is a rare complication, it is still associated with high maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality rates. With this study, we aim to present a case report and review the available literature on hepatic rupture associated with hypertensive disorders of the pregnancy.
METHODS: We present a case report and a review of the literature of the last 20 years on hepatic rupture associated with pregnancy-induced hypertensive

OBJECTIVES: Excessive left ventricular mass (LVM) results in inefficient LV work with energy waste leading to a negative prognostic effect. We aimed at investigating the presence of inappropriate LVM and calculating the myocardial mechano-energetic efficiency index (MEEi) in former pre-eclamptic (PE) women (with or without HELLP syndrome) compared to women who experienced HELLP syndrome without PE.
STUDY DESIGN: In this cross-sectional study, women with a history of normotensive HELLP (n = 32), PE without HELLP (n = 59), and PE with HELLP (n = 101) underwent echocardiography as part of the cl
