Isolated pulmonary candidiasis in a patient with diabetes mellitus: A rare case report.

Fungal infections are as a cause of morbidity and mortality in immunocompromise patients. Because the respiratory tract is colonized with Candida, the presence of this agent in respiratory specimens makes the diagnosis of Candida pneumonia problematic. Candida pneumonia is a rare infection, and the majority of cases are secondary to hematogenous dissemination. Furthermore isolated Candida pneumonia originating from endotracheal inoculation is an extremely rare entity. We describe a case of isolated pulmonary candidiasis in the form multiple nodular lesions in a patient with long-term history o

The serum glucan level and pathological changes of antifungal treatment for lower respiratory tract infection of Candida albicans.

Due to the fact that Candida albicans colonizes in the upper respiratory tracts of healthy people, whether or not its isolation from airway secretions is sufficient to warrant treatment remains controversial. The animal models of immunosuppressive rats with pulmonary candidiasis were established by the intratracheal inoculating suspensions of C. albicans, and the animals were divided into the following three groups: (1) antifungal treatment group, (2) saline control group, and (3) blank control group. We noted the following in our studies: (1) The fungal load of the saline control group gradua

Antemortem Diagnosis and Successful Treatment of Pulmonary Candidiasis in a Sun Conure (Aratinga solstitialis).

An adult male sun conure (Aratinga solstitialis) was evaluated because of lethargy, ruffled feathers, and decreased appetite. Physical examination revealed hypothermia, dehydration, dyspnea, and crop distention. Results of a complete blood cell count revealed a marked inflammatory leukogram, and cytologic examination of a crop swab sample identified gram-negative bacilli and occasional yeast organisms. Radiographs demonstrated an opaque, ill-defined, soft tissue structure in the caudal coelom just cranial to the renogonadal silhouette, loss of serosal detail, and splenomegaly. Endoscopic exami

An animal experiment about early pulmonary candidiasis in immunosuppressive rabbits: thin-section CT images dynamically observed and proved by histopathological results.

BACKGROUND: Early detection and treatment of pulmonary fungal infection in immunocompromised patients has a profound impact on mortality. However, information available about the thin-section computed tomography (CT) findings of Candida pneumonia has largely been limited to isolated cases seen in reviews of various infections and to other acute lung diseases seen in immunocompromised patients. PURPOSE: To dynamically observe and evaluate CT findings in immunosuppressed animals with histopathologically confirmed pulmonary candidiasis at the acute stage. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-four New Z

A necrotic lung ball caused by co-infection with Candida and Streptococcus pneumoniae.

INTRODUCTION: A necrotic lung ball is a rare radiological feature that is sometimes seen in cases of pulmonary aspergillosis. This paper reports a rare occurrence of a necrotic lung ball in a young male caused by Candida and Streptococcus pneumoniae. CASE REPORT: A 28-year-old male with pulmonary candidiasis was found to have a lung ball on computed tomography (CT) of the chest. The patient was treated with β-lactams and itraconazole and then fluconazole, which improved his condition (as found on a following chest CT scan) and serum β-D-glucan level. The necrotic lung ball was suspected to ha

Pulmonary candidiasis presenting as mycetoma.

Candida is a saprophytic yeast that is frequently recovered from the respiratory tract. Most mycetoma lesions are due to Aspergillus species growing inside an existing cavity. The saprophytic nature of the Candida species in the human respiratory tract obscures diagnosis of Candida pulmonary infections. Only a few cases of mycetoma due to Can-dida have been reported. We report a case of mycetoma caused by Candida albicans in a diabetic immunocompromised tuberculous patient. Diagnosis was confirmed by biopsy and certain points strongly favoured the diagnosis. The patient was immunocompromised d

Disseminated pulmonary candidiasis complicating hyperimmunoglobulin E (Job's) syndrome.

Hyperimmunoglobulin E (Job's) syndrome is a rare disease characterized by recurrent pneumonia and sinusitis, pneumatoceles, chronic dermatitis, and elevated serum levels of immunoglobulin E. In this report, the author presents a case of disseminated pulmonary candidiasis in a young man with hyperimmunoglobulin E syndrome. His chest radiograph showed reticulonodular opacities in both lungs. Computed tomography scans revealed multiple pulmonary nodules and hilar and mediastinal enlarged lymph nodes.

Risk factors for pulmonary candidiasis in preterm infants with a birth weight of less than 1250 g.

UNLABELLED: To evaluate the epidemiology of pulmonary candidiasis (PC) and to identify risk factors in premature infants during the 1st month of life, all infants with a birth weight <1250 g admitted to our neonatal intensive care unit with PC between January 1994 and December 2001 were retrospectively reviewed. Infants with PC ( n =20) were compared with a control group ( n =20), matched for gestational age and birth weight, with regard to possible perinatal and postnatal risk factors. Among 325 infants with a birth weight <1250 g, 20 out of 233 ventilated infants (8.6%) developed PC. Candida

Strong antifungal activity of SS750, a new triazole derivative, is based on its selective binding affinity to cytochrome P450 of fungi.

SS750 [(R)-(-)-2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)-1-(ethylsulfonyl)-1,1-difluoro-3-(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)-2-propanol] is a new triazole, and its potential as an antifungal agent was evaluated by in vitro and in vivo studies. In a comparison of the MICs at which 50% of isolates are inhibited (MIC(50)s) for all strains of Candida species and Cryptococcus neoformans tested, SS750 was four times or more active than fluconazole and had activity comparable to that of itraconazole. The most important advantage of SS750 was that, when the MIC(90)s were compared, SS750 had 64 and 32 times greater antifungal activ

Pulmonary candidiasis in patients with cancer: an autopsy study.

For patients who had cancer and autopsy-proven pneumonia, we evaluated whether cultures of respiratory secretions (sputum and/or bronchoalveolar lavage) performed < or =4 weeks before autopsy were a reliable basis for the diagnosis of pulmonary candidiasis. Pulmonary candidiasis was identified at autopsy in 36 patients, but common clinical predictors were insensitive for this diagnosis. For sputum culture, the sensitivity, specificity, and the positive and negative predictive values were 85%, 60%, 42%, and 93%, respectively; for bronchoalveolar lavage culture, these values were 71%, 57%, 29%,

Pulmonary candidiasis caused by Candida albicans in a Greek tortoise (Testudo graeca) and treatment with intrapulmonary amphotericin B.

An adult female Greek tortoise (Testudo graeca) presented with dyspnea, lethargy, and anorexia. Severe unilateral pulmonary candidiasis was diagnosed and confirmed by histologic and microbiologic evaluations. Initial treatment with ketoconazole resulted in plasma elevations of aspartate aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase, and bile acids consistent with imidazole-induced hepatotoxicity. Plasma chemistry abnormalities resolved upon withdrawal of the drug. Temporary osteotomy permitted access to the diseased lung and facilitated intrapulmonary catheterization. Intrapulmonary amphotericin B t

Sarcoidosis and common variable immunodeficiency. A case of a malignant course of sarcoidosis in conjunction with severe impairment of the cellular and humoral immune system.

The number of patients with hematological malignancies who develop invasive fungal disease (IFD) has increased dramatically in recent decades. This increase is attributed to impairment of the host immune system due to intensive cytotoxic chemotherapies, use of corticosteroids and profound immunosuppression after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Additionally, the increasing prevalence of fungal infections caused by emerging and rare pathogens, IFD of mixed etiology or of atypical localization is observed. There are also much more patients with IFD who do not belong to a well-desc
