Optimising gravimetric method interpretation using population-specific blood densities among Indonesian pregnant women: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) depends heavily on accurate and timely blood loss assessment, yet no gold standard assessment method is available. Gravimetric methods are recommended for low-resource settings, but they require an accurate blood density value for interpretation. Currently, there are no data on the blood density of pregnant or labour women. OBJECTIVE: This study measured the blood density of Indonesian pregnant women to improve the reliability of the gravimetric results in estimating postpartum blood loss. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was condu

A case report of pregnancy complicated by diffuse alveolar hemorrhage: An unexpected link to untreated Graves' disease.

BACKGROUND: Diffuse Alveolar Hemorrhage (DAH) is a life-threatening condition characterized by widespread bleeding within the alveoli, often resulting from pulmonary capillaritis, bland pulmonary hemorrhage, or diffuse alveolar damage. It presents with hemoptysis, dyspnea, hypoxemia, and anemia, and can lead to respiratory failure. This case report highlights a rare instance of DAH in a pregnant woman with untreated Graves' disease, emphasizing the importance of considering uncommon etiologies in the absence of typical triggers. CASE PRESENTATION: A 36-year-old pregnant woman at 37 weeks of g

The influence of thrombophilia and low molecular weight heparin on D-Dimer levels in women with high-risk pregnancy.

INTRODUCTION: Pregnancy is a hypercoagulable state that raises the risk of venous thromboembolism VTE), particularly in women with thrombophilia. D-Dimer levels increase during the activation of the coagulation cascade and are used to exclude VTE in non-pregnant women. This study aimed to analyze the influence of thrombophilia and the use of low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) on D-dimer levels in pregnant women. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed data from pregnant women presenting at the hemostaseology outpatient clinic of the University Hospital of Leipzig between July 2016 and June 2023

Incidence and Predictors of Necrotizing Enterocolitis Among Low-Birth-Weight Neonates Admitted to Southern Ethiopian Public Hospitals.

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) has emerged over the past 25 years as the most common gastrointestinal emergency in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) worldwide. Despite significant improvements in survival among premature and low-birth-weight (LBW) neonates due to advances in neonatal intensive care, the incidence of NEC remains persistently high, largely because of the physiological vulnerability associated with LBW and prematurity. The purpose of this study was to assess the incidence and identify predictors of NEC among LBW newborns in South Ethiopia. A hospital-based prospective cohort

Pathologic abnormalities of deep placentation in the great obstetrical syndromes: Implications for understanding the pathophysiology, risk assessment in early pregnancy, and personalized prevention.

The concept of the Great Obstetrical Syndromes was introduced to explain the unique nature of obstetrical disease, which differs fundamentally from disorders in other areas of medicine. These syndromes, including preeclampsia, fetal growth restriction, fetal death, and spontaneous preterm birth, represent clinical endpoints rather than single diseases and share defining characteristics: they arise from multiple etiologies, have a prolonged subclinical phase, involve the fetus as an active participant, are adaptive in nature, and result from complex genetic and environmental interactions betwee

Multi-omics analysis reveals steroid hormone biosynthesis as a key pathway in advanced maternal age threatened abortion†.

Advanced maternal age (≥35 years) is increasingly common and associated with a higher risk of threatened abortion, yet its molecular basis remains unclear. To elucidate the underlying mechanisms of advanced maternal age-related threatened abortion (AMA-TA) by integrating metabolomics and transcriptomics. Untargeted serum metabolomics was performed in nine AMA-TA patients and seven age-matched healthy pregnant women. An AMA-TA mouse model was established using mifepristone (4 mg/kg) to assess embryo resorption, placental morphology, and serum hormone levels. Serum metabolomics and placental tra

First-Trimester Serum Omentin Levels as a Predictor of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a frequent metabolic complication of pregnancy associated with significant maternal and neonatal morbidity. Its prevalence is notably higher among South Asian women, likely due to increased baseline insulin resistance and genetic predisposition. Conventional screening using the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), typically performed at 24-28 weeks of gestation, often identifies GDM after metabolic alterations are already established, thereby limiting opportunities for early intervention. This has led to growing interest in identifying reliable

Hemodynamic effects of umbilical cord milking versus early cord clamping in nonvigorous intrauterine growth restricted neonates: a randomized controlled trial.

UNLABELLED: The effect of placental transfusion on the nonvigorous intrauterine growth restricted (IUGR) neonates with pre-existing subclinical myocardial dysfunction and altered cerebral hemodynamics is largely unknown. The present study was planned to evaluate the effect of umbilical cord milking (UCM) on left ventricular output (LVO) of nonvigorous IUGR neonates of > 28-weeks' gestation. In the present randomized control trial, 74 nonvigorous IUGR neonates were randomly allocated to UCM (4-times squeezing of 20-cm intact cord, n = 37) and ECC (cord clamping within 30 s, n = 37). The primary

Electroacupuncture for diminished ovarian reserve-associated infertility with a live birth: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Diminished ovarian reserve (DOR) refers to a decrease in the quantity and/or quality of oocytes in the ovaries, resulting in decreased fertility. DOR is one of the primary causes of infertility in women. Electroacupuncture therapy has been widely used in gynecological diseases. To our knowledge, there are currently no published case reports of electroacupuncture for two intermittent treatments of DOR-associated infertility. We present a case of electroacupuncture in two separate treatment sessions for DOR-associated infertility, resulting in a successful live birth following an i

Re-assessment of the therapeutic LH window in normogonadotropic IVF patients.

INTRODUCTION: Previous research has proposed a luteinizing hormone (LH) threshold and ceiling level, below which oestradiol production is not adequate and above which LH may be detrimental to follicular development. This therapeutic LH window was mainly supported by clinical research in anovulatory patients but observations in normogonadotropic women were controversial. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A literature narrative review from 1985 through 2025. Studies evaluated included i) preclinical studies using in vivo superovulation models in rodents and ii) clinical studies in normogonadotropic IVF pa
