A 16,16 dimethyl prostaglandin E2 p-benzaldehyde semicarbazone ester was used for termination of pregnancy in 54 late first trimester and second trimester patients. The drug (750 microng in gelatine glycerine pessaries) was administered every four hours. Fifty patients (92-5%) aborted during the 36 hours treatment. Side effects were mild and consisted of vomiting in five patients, diarrhoea in three patients and transient pyrexia in two.

Associations between previous induced abortion and demographic and health factors in pregnancy were measured in 9 874 women who gave birth and who had been interviewed during pregnancy. Mid-trimester abortion was successfully induced in 70 of 71 patients by administration of vaginal PGE2 suppositories. The one patient who failed to abort with this method was pregnant in the blind horn of a duplex uterus. The mean abortion time for the successful inductions was 11.88 hours.
