INTRODUCTION: Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome (KTS) is a rare congenital malformation characterized by a clinical triad: capillary malformations, varicose veins, and hypertrophy of soft tissues or bones in one or more limbs. Differential diagnosis from Parkes Weber syndrome is crucial; the primary distinguishing feature is the presence of arteriovenous fistulas. KTS is progressive. Management of KTS is predominantly conservative, involving lifelong elastic compression therapy and regular courses of venotonics. This case report presents the clinical follow-up of a patient with KTS over a period of m

IMPORTANCE: Superficial vein thrombosis (SuVT) is characterized by thrombus in the superficial veins, typically in the lower or upper extremities, and has an estimated annual incidence of 64 to 131 per 100 000 person-years. Approximately 10% of patients with SuVT progress to deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE).
OBSERVATIONS: Endothelial injury (caused by infection or intravenous devices), venous stasis (such as from chronic venous insufficiency or prolonged immobility), and hypercoagulability (due to cancer or pregnancy) are pathophysiologic factors associated with SuVT. Cli

ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of sublingual varicosity and lower limb varicosity in pregnant women, and to analyze the relationship between these variables.MethodsThis was a descriptive, analytical cross-sectional study conducted through clinical examinations of the oral cavity and lower limbs of pregnant women. The sample consisted of 193 pregnant women receiving care through a prenatal program. Sublingual varicosity was categorized using a dichotomous scale: grade 0 and grade 1. Lower limb varicosities were classified based on the CEAP clinical classification s

Varicose veins are associated with conditions that impair venous return, such as pregnancy, physical inactivity, valve failure and post-thrombotic syndrome. We report the case of a 50-year-old female patient with history of intermittent calf pain, worsening with prolonged standing posture. She had no previous medical history of either lower extremity trauma or infection. Physical examination showed medial pretibial soft tissue swelling. CT and MRI showed images suggestive of anomalous intraosseous venous drainage with associated bone edema and periosteal reaction. Knowledge of this rare entity

Objective: To compare the effectiveness of cellular tissue products (CTP) versus standard care in U.S. Medicare beneficiaries with diabetic lower extremity ulcers (DLEUs) or venous leg ulcers (VLUs). Approach: We performed a retrospective cohort study using real-world evidence from U.S. Medicare claims for DLEUs or VLUs between 2016 and 2020. There were three cohorts evaluated: viable cryopreserved placental membrane (vCPM) or viable lyopreserved placental membrane (vLPM); other CTP; and standard care. Claims were collapsed into episodes of care. Univariate and bivariate statistics were used t

BACKGROUND: National survey data exploring the patient experience with lipedema are lacking.
METHODS: We conducted national surveys from 2016 to 2022 of women with lipedema as well as female controls. Surveys collected information on symptomatology, pain, and therapies. We performed logistic regression comparing symptoms among those with lipedema versus controls adjusting for age and BMI.
RESULTS: A total of 707 women with lipedema and 216 controls completed the surveys. Those with lipedema had a mean age of 48.6 years and mean BMI of 40.9 kg/m2. Lipedema symptom onset occurred frequently at

BACKGROUND: Primary varicose veins (PVV) represent the most prominent clinical manifestation of chronic venous disease (CVD) and has a complex pathophysiological background. The aim of our study was to investigate the impact of sonographic hemodynamical and contemporary epidemiological factors on the clinical severity of PVV.
METHODS: We analyzed the sonographic hemodynamical and clinical parameters from 159 consecutive CVD patients and 233 lower limbs with PVV of clinical stages C2, C3 and C4. Univariate and logistic regression analysis was performed between patients of C2 (N.=70 - 30.0%) an

Pulmonary embolism (PE) is one of the most common fatal complications in a wide variety of pathologies along the most common death causes of the population - diseases of the circulatory system and oncology. The development of PE in the postoperative and postpartum periods can also be fatal. The diagnosis of PE is very difficult and in 50-80% of cases it is not diagnosed at all. During autopsies it is important not only to diagnose PE but also to establish the source of its origin. An example of PE in a 34-year-old pregnant woman is given; the PE source was thrombosis of the right deep femoral

Pregnancy is a period in a woman's life associated with an increased risk of developing lower extremity chronic venous disease (CVD). Pregnancy-associated CVD is associated with changes in placental villi. We investigated angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis in the placental villi of women with CVD during pregnancy compared with healthy controls with no history of CVD (HC). An observational, analytical, and prospective cohort study was conducted on 114 women in their third trimester of pregnancy (32 weeks). Sixty-two participants were clinically diagnosed with CVD. In parallel, 52 controls with

OBJECTIVES: To analyze the effect of graduated compression stockings on the venous reflux in the lower limbs of pregnant women.
METHOD: A controlled randomized clinical trial was performed with sixty women: intervention group (n = 30), who used compression stockings, and control group (n = 30). Using duplex-ultrasound, the reflux time and peak reflux velocity in the great saphenous vein and small saphenous vein were analyzed.
RESULTS: Great saphenous vein reflux times in the intervention group were 0.13 s at the beginning (initial) and 0.04 s at the end of pregnancy (final) in the right leg

Venous ulcers are the most common type of chronic lower extremity ulcers, affecting 1% to 3% of the U.S. population. Venous hypertension as a result of venous reflux (incompetence) or obstruction is thought to be the primary underlying mechanism for venous ulcer formation. Risk factors for the development of venous ulcers include age 55 years or older, family history of chronic venous insufficiency, higher body mass index, history of pulmonary embolism or superficial/deep venous thrombosis, lower extremity skeletal or joint disease, higher number of pregnancies, parental history of ankle ulcer

The problem of chronic venous insufficiency in women during pregnancy is of current concern. A total of 115 pregnant women in the first, second and third trimesters of gestation were examined in a stage-wise manner. During the first stage we conducted a comprehensive clinical study with the obligatory consultation by the obstetrician-gynaecologist. At the second stage, all women were subjected to ultrasonographic examination of the venous system of both lower extremities and the small pelvis. Studying the diameters of the deep veins of the right and left lower limbs, as well as the paired vein

Haemodynamic changes produced during pregnancy lead to elevated venous pressure in the legs and an increased resting consumption of oxygen. These events can cause varicose veins, or venous insufficiency (VI), which by creating an environment of hypoxia could affect the structure and function of the placental barrier. This study assesses the remodelling state of the placental villi by examining differences in collagens with a known role in villus structure and in placental barrier permeability between patients with and without VI. Samples of 67 placentas from women with VI (n=24) and without VI

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a common complication after surgical treatment of fractures, which is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Identifying the risk factors for VTE is important for preventive strategies to reduce the incidence of VTE. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the incidence of VTE and the risk factors influencing the development of VTE in patients who underwent surgery for fractures below the hip. Vulvar varicosities are often asymptomatic, and they may be associated with varicose veins of the lower extremity. Also, they may be a part of pelvic congestion syndrome and usually occur during pregnancy. We present a case of a huge isolated and disfiguring vulvar varicosities in a non-pregnant women managed successfully by combination of surgery and sclerotherapy.

This article is to summarise key concepts for the health of the midwife with particular focus on standing for prolonged periods. One of the resultant factors relating to standing postures is the slow but avoidable progression of varicose veins. There is a strong genetic bias to these veins, which can be distressing, but here we will highlight awareness and current research.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy is presumed to be a major contributory factor in the increased incidence of varicose veins in women, which can in turn lead to venous insufficiency and leg oedema. The most common symptom of varicose veins and oedema is the substantial pain experienced, as well as night cramps, numbness, tingling, the legs may feel heavy, achy, and possibly be unsightly. Treatments for varicose veins are usually divided into three main groups: surgery, pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments. Treatments of leg oedema comprise mostly symptom reduction rather than cure and use of

BACKGROUND: Common discomforts of pregnancy experienced in the lower extremity include sciatica, leg cramps and varicose veins. Whilst research attention has focused on aetiology and outcomes, the health service utilisation of pregnant women suffering from these complaints has been largely overlooked.
AIM: To examine the health status and health service utilisation profile of pregnant women experiencing sciatica, leg cramps or varicose veins.
METHODS: Linear and logistic regression was applied to a cross-sectional survey of a pregnant women drawn from the 1973 to 1978 cohort (aged 31-36 year

INTRODUCTION: A new consensus on the management of superficial thrombophlebitis (STP) from the Central European Vascular Forum (CEVF) for the diagnosis and treatment of STP recommends anticoagulation treatment either with Fondaparinux 2.5 mg for at least 45 days or with low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) for 4 weeks in patients with thrombosis of GSV/SSV proven by duplex ultrasonography (DUS) and with thrombus length exceeding 5 cm. The dosage and duration of anticoagulation treatment depend on the associated diseases and other risk factors for TVE. Many options for doses an duration of treat
