Vaginal bleeding during pregnancy is a risk factor for adverse pregnancy outcome. Beyond 20 weeks of gestation, the most frequent causes of bleeding associated with maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality are placenta previa and placental abruption. Cervical varix during pregnancy is a rare condition. To our knowledge, only six cases have been reported in the literature. Clinical presentation of vascular disorders of female pelvis including placental adhesion, retained product of conception, ovarian venous thrombosis, varices, torsion and haemorrhagic infarct of ovary is often non-specific. Because of its availability, safety, and cost-effectiveness, ultrasound is the first investigation of choice. Computed tomography and MRI clearly depict the pelvic and retroperitoneal anatomy. This pictorial essay illustrates the complementary role of US, CT, and MRI in diagnosing vascular disorders of female pelvis.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the long-term clinical outcome of transcatheter embolotherapy in women with chronic pelvic pain caused by ovarian and pelvic varices.

We report a case of spontaneous rupture of uterine varicose vein revealed by a massive peritoneal hemorrhage in a 34-year-old patient at 27th weeks of gestation. Laparotomy enabled diagnosis and treatment of this complication. The pregnancy was continued without any problem with a normal delivery at term of a healthy child.

Groin swelling first evokes inguinal or femoral hernia but many other conditions may account for it. We describe varicosities of round ligament in a 27-year-old pregnant woman. She presented with a groin mass mimicking an inguinal hernia. Diagnosis was made during surgical exploration. This case report strengthens the fact that varicosities of the round ligament, favoured by hormonal and mechanical factors, should be evoked in a pregnant woman complaining of a groin mass. Ultrasonographic examination of the groin should be performed in such cases to avoid unnecessary surgery.

We report a case of spontaneous rupture of a uterine varicosis in the third trimester of pregnancy resulting in massive peritoneal hemorrhage and maternal shock. This patient with an uncomplicated pregnancy presented symptoms suggestive of abruptio placenta with foetal distress. A caesarean section was performed identifying the cause and permitting the treatment of this syndrome. Since 1950, only 8 cases have been reported.

We report an unusual etiology for third-trimester bleeding. A pregnant patient underwent sonographic evaluation after presenting in the third trimester with uterine contractions and bleeding per the vagina. Massive cervical varices were identified on prenatal sonography as the cause of the bleeding and resulted in cesarean delivery and gravid hysterectomy. Cervical varices may result in significant maternal morbidity despite prenatal diagnosis.

A case of uncomplicated round ligament varices mimicking an irreducible inguinal hernia in the third trimester of pregnancy is presented. The authors treated in 1983-1993 72 patients with vulvar varicosities who suffered particularly during pregnancy. Typical symptoms are pruritus, pain caused by pressure in the vulvar area and the sensation of prolapse. According to the authors surgical treatment is unnecessary and involves risk.
