Round ligament varicosities associated with uterine varicosities in pregnancy: a case report.

Round ligament varicosities associated with uterine varicosities are rare during pregnancy. We report the case of a pregnant woman with a painful mass in her left groin at 32 weeks' gestation. Ultrasound revealed multiple distended veins within the left round ligament and over the uterus. The patient was treated by close observation and had a vaginal delivery of a healthy baby.

Round ligament varicosities: a rare cause of groin swelling in pregnancy.

Round ligament varicosities (RLVs) are rare, and only occur in pregnancy. The swelling due to RLVs mimics an inguinal hernia and generally resolves spontaneously after delivery. Distinguishing between varicosities and hernias is critical to avoid unnecessary surgeries on pregnant women. We aimed to determine the significance of RLVs during pregnancy and to review and describe their clinical and sonographic characteristics. All patients were diagnosed by gray scale and color Doppler ultrasonography, managed conservatively, and RLVs regressed spontaneously postpartum.

Suspected inguinal hernias in pregnancy--handle with care!

PURPOSE: With a newly described diagnostic pathway, we aim to avoid unnecessary surgical exploration for suspected symptomatic groin hernias in pregnancy. METHODS: A consecutive series of eighteen pregnant women was referred to our department due to a gradual onset of inguinal swelling and groin ache. In a prospective clinical study, we evaluated these patients clinically and employed grey-scale and colour Doppler sonography (CDS) in all cases--following a newly described pathway. All patients were examined pre- and post-partum by two qualified surgeons. Median follow-up time was 11 months.

Spontaneous rupture of uterine varices in third trimester pregnancy: an unexpected cause of hemoperitoneum. A case report and literature review.

The authors report a case of spontaneous rupture of uterine varices occurring in the third trimester of pregnancy. It was responsible for a collapse in breast hemoperitoneum. The patient, whose pregnancy was a simple, suddenly felt symptoms of preterm labor. There was a rapid onset of maternal collapse with acute fetal distress. Only emergency exploratory laparotomy allowed for etiological diagnosis and treatment.

Cervical varicosities and placenta praevia.

INTRODUCTION: Cervical varicosities (CVs) have been reported infrequently in pregnancy and have been associated with significant antepartum and postpartum haemorrhage. The most common association with CVs in pregnancy in the literature is placenta praevia. AIMS: To further investigate the association between placenta praevia and CVs. METHODS: A retrospective audit of all cases of placenta praevia that had an ultrasound in the Feto-Maternal Unit at Liverpool Hospital over the period January 2001 to January 2012. Patient outcomes were obtained from the hospital paper and electronic medical rec

Management of a Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome in pregnant women with mega-cisterna magna and splenic and vulvar varices at birth: a case report.

Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome (KTS) is a rare, sporadic and complex malformation characterized by the clinical triad of: (i) capillary malformation (port-wine stain); (ii) soft tissue and bone hypertrophy or occasionally, hypertrophy of one lower limb; and (iii) atypical lateral varicosity. The maternal and fetal risks associated with pregnancy in women with KTS are proportional to disease severity, which can be exacerbated by pregnancy. Complications include bleeding, disseminated intravascular coagulation, thromboembolic events and pain. Here, we report the case of a pregnant woman with KTS who

Pregnancy in women with portal vein thrombosis: results of a multicentric European study on maternal and fetal management and outcome.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Women of childbearing age account for approximately 25% of patients with non-cirrhotic portal vein thrombosis (PVT). We aimed at assessing maternal and fetal outcome in pregnant women with known PVT. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of the files of women with chronic PVT in three European referral centers between 1986 and 2010. RESULTS: Forty-five pregnancies, 28 (62%) treated with low molecular weight heparin, occurred in 24 women. Nine (20%) were lost before gestation week 20. Preterm birth occurred in 38% of deliveries: there were 3 births at week 24-25, 7

Vaginal delivery in the presence of huge vulvar varicosities: a case report with MRI evaluation.

Vulvar varicosities are generally not an indication for a caesarean section but in a rare case of severe vulvar varicosities, it would be a controversial issue whether to perform a caesarean section for fear they might rupture during a vaginal delivery. We present a case of huge vulvar varicosities during pregnancy. MRI revealed obstruction of the internal iliac system by the gravid uterus and subsequent incompetence of a collateral pathway via the round ligament vein that emptied into the ovarian vein. The patient went into labour at 38 weeks, and successfully vaginally delivered a baby. The

Incapacitating pelvic congestion syndrome in a patient with a history of May-Thurner syndrome and left ovarian vein embolization.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this article is to report a rare case of unresolved incapacitating pelvic congestion syndrome (PCS) in a patient with a history of May-Thurner syndrome previously treated with stenting and left ovarian vein embolization. Additionally, this article highlights the role of pelvic venography in patients with PCS and reviews the coexistence. METHODS: A 32-year-old woman was referred to us for the evaluation of recurrent pelvic pain and dyspareunia requiring analgesics. Initially, she developed left lower-extremity deep vein thrombosis a few months after her first pregnancy.

Cervical varices complicated by thrombosis in pregnancy.

We present a case of a 36-year-old pregnant woman with varicose veins of the uterine cervix diagnosed during the second trimester. The cervical tissue was completely replaced with dilated venous plexus. Therapeutic decisions were further complicated by the presence of blood clots within the dilated vessels. Pregnancy proceeded uneventfully, no bleeding occurred and the patient underwent a planned Cesarean delivery. This is the first reported case in the medical literature where the rare phenomenon of cervical varices was accompanied by thrombosis.

A case of spontaneous rupture of a uterine superficial varicose vein in midgestation.

A 25-year-old gravida two, nulliparous pregnant woman complained of a sudden onset of severe pain in the right lateral abdominal area and went to hospital at 28 weeks and 5 days' gestation. Since cyclic uterine contractions were observed, a diagnosis of preterm labor was made and tocolysis was carried out by the continuous venous infusion of ritodorine. She was transferred to Hamamatsu University Hospital and an emergency cesarean section was carried out due to non-reassuring fetal status. A hemoperitoneum of 850 mL was observed in the peritoneal cavity and an immature male baby weighing 1140

Cervical varix complicating marginal placenta previa: a unique coexistence.

Uterine cervical varix (CV) is a very rare condition during pregnancy and may cause moderate to severe hemorrhage. We present the third reported case of huge CV coexisting with placenta previa in the English literature. A 40-year-old chronic hypertensive patient with marginal placenta previa also had cervical varix causing hemorrhage. At the 38th gestational week emergent cesarean section was performed because of placental abruption. Placenta previa is a risk factor for CV and patients with placenta previa who have moderate bleeding should be examined for this coexistence. The choice of manage

Round ligament varicosities mimicking inguinal herniae in pregnancy--a diagnostic dilemma.

Round ligament varicosities are rare surgical entities which can occur during pregnancy and mimic inguinal herniae. Correct diagnosis by clinical examination and ultrasonography can avoid an unnecessary surgical operation during pregnancy and its related complications. We present one case of 26 years pregnant lady reporting with bilateral round ligament varicosities.

[Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome and pregnancy. Case report].

The Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome is a rare congenital disorder consisting of: cutaneous vascular nevi, varicose veins or venous malformations and hypertrophy of soft tissue and bone, affecting one or more limbs. The morbidity of the disease is associated with vascular anomalies. Pregnancy is discouraged because this rare disease puts a pregnant woman in an increased obstetric risk, due to pregnancy can exacerbate complications. The pregnancy has been reported rarely in patients with Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome, although the incidence is unknown. Until 2006 there have been only 17 reported cases o
