High Prevalence of F2 20210G > A in Splanchnic Vein Thrombosis and Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis: A Retrospective Cohort Study of Patients with Thrombosis in Atypical Sites.

INTRODUCTION: Atypical sites for thrombosis include deep vein thrombosis (DVT) of the upper extremity (UE-DVT), splanchnic vein thrombosis (SVT), and cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST). In addition to specific pathogenic factors, their underlying mechanisms share similarities with typical venous thromboembolism (VTE), namely, DVT of the lower extremity and/or pulmonary embolism, but are less understood. METHODS: Records of unselected patients with a history of typical VTE (n = 2,011), UE-DVT (n = 117), SVT (n = 83), and CVST (n = 82), who were referred to the Institute in Bonn for ambula

From varicose veins to venous thromboembolic events.

Varicose veins (VVs) mostly represent benign disease. However, in some cases, they can lead to serious complications including deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). Besides deteriorated blood flow caused by VVs inflammation is most probably a common denominator of VVs and DVT, which promotes a procoagulant state and thrombus formation also in deep veins. Patients with VVs have increased levels of interleukins, the most specific inflammatory markers of vascular wall inflammation that promote coagulation. The studies showed that VVs may increase the risk for DVT. However, the

Fibrin monomer complex as a potential thrombosis marker related to venous thromboembolism risk in pregnant women.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy is a risk factor for venous thromboembolism (VTE) due to increased coagulation factor activity and decreased protein S activity. However, thrombosis markers for predicting VTE in pregnancy remain controversial. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between VTE risk and thrombosis markers in pregnant women and to identify markers related to VTE risk. METHODS: Archived plasma samples from 107 pregnant women were used in this study, and the concentrations of D-dimer, fibrin monomer complex (FMC), plasmin-plasmin inhibitor complex, prothrombin time, activated part

A Comprehensive Review of Risk Factors for Venous Thromboembolism: From Epidemiology to Pathophysiology.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is the third most common cause of death worldwide. The incidence of VTE varies according to different countries, ranging from 1-2 per 1000 person-years in Western Countries, while it is lower in Eastern Countries (<1 per 1000 person-years). Many risk factors have been identified in patients developing VTE, but the relative contribution of each risk factor to thrombotic risk, as well as pathogenetic mechanisms, have not been fully described. Herewith, we provide a comprehensive review of the most common risk factors for VTE, including male sex, diabetes, obesity, sm

Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells accelerate angiogenesis in pregnant experimentally induced deep venous thrombosis rat model via up-regulation of pro-angiogenic secretogranin II.

The present study investigated whether bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSCs) facilitate angiogenesis and improve outcomes of pregnancy with obstetric deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and explored the underlying mechanism. A pregnant DVT rat model was established using a "stenosis" method on the lower segment of the inferior vena cava (IVC). The extent of vascularization in thrombosed IVC was examined by immunohistochemistry. In addition, the effect of BMMSCs on DVT pregnancy outcomes was evaluated. We also characterized the effect of BMMSC-derived conditioned medium (BM-CM) on the im

Multidisciplinary care of the pregnant patient with or at risk for venous thromboembolism: a recommended toolkit from the Foundation for Women and Girls with Blood Disorders Thrombosis Subcommittee.

The care of pregnant persons with/at risk of venous thromboembolism is complex and often challenging. Although guidelines have been published regarding the use of specific therapies, such as anticoagulants; in this population, none have provided guidance on how to coordinate multidisciplinary care of these patients. Here we provide an expert consensus on the role of various providers in the care of this patient population, as well as necessary resources and suggestions for best practices.

[Application progress of high-throughput sequencing in antiphospholipid syndrome].

Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is characterized by arterial and venous thrombosis and(or) morbid pregnancy, accompanied by persistent antiphospholipid antibody (aPL) positivity. However, due to the complex pathogenesis of APS and the large individual differences in the expression of aPL profiles of patients, the problem of APS diagnosis, prognosis judgment and risk assessment may not be solved only from antibody level. It is necessary to use new technologies and multiple dimensions to explore novel APS biomarkers. The application of next generation sequencing (NGS) technology in diseases with

Rare diagnosis of coexistent antiphospholipid syndrome and systemic lupus erythematosus in a male patient with successful management: a case report.

UNLABELLED: Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) are two autoimmune disorders that can develop together or separately. Similarities in the pathogenesis have been discovered, including the production of autoantibodies that target subcellular antigens and shared elevated risk of cardiovascular morbidity, which may be caused by common pathologic pathways. CASE PRESENTATION: A 28-year-old male, referred to our hospital for the assessment of chest pain. Past medical history was significant for extensive deep venous thrombosis despite the appropriate management wit

Association between serum alkaline phosphatase levels in late pregnancy and the incidence of venous thromboembolism postpartum: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Two previous studies found alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels were related with the development of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in hospitalised patients. VTE is a leading cause of death during pregnancy and postpartum. No prior study has investigated the associations of ALP levels and VTE postpartum, and the related mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the associations between ALP levels and VTE postpartum, and to reveal the potential mechanisms. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we included pregnant women who planned to deliver at the Department of

Heparin induced thrombocytopenia in pregnancy: A therapeutic challenge case report and literature review.

The anticoagulants of choice for the prevention and treatment of venous thromboembolic disease during pregnancy are unfractionated heparin and low-molecular-weight heparin. Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is introduced as a rare but critical side effect of heparin products raising the thromboembolic event paradoxically. Here, we present a case of HIT in pregnancy with challenging management due to coincidence of lupus anticoagulant (LA) and limited anticoagulant options in the pharmaceutical market of our country of residence. We describe a 6-week pregnant patient with deep venous throm

Knowledge Levels and Predictors of Venous Thromboembolism among Pregnant Women in Nigeria: A Cross-Sectional Survey for the 'Move for Flow' Programme.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy is a significant risk factor for Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) which results in high maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality rates. Awareness creation is one of the preventable strategies of VTE. To this effect, we designed the 'Move for Flow' program aimed at maternal health education on VTE, its symptoms and preventive strategies. For the best implementation of this program, the current knowledge level of the relevant population is of great interest in guiding the program design and implementation. AIM: To assess the knowledge levels of VTE among Nigerian pregnan
