OBJECTIVE: Cerebral venous thrombosis is a rare disease with a high mortality rate. Pregnancy can increase the risk of intracranial venous sinus thrombosis formation, and this condition in turn elevates the maternal mortality rate. Therefore, early diagnosis and appropriate treatment of intracranial venous sinus thrombosis during pregnancy are crucial for the prognosis of pregnant women.
CASE REPORT: We present a case of 30-year-old woman who had a spontaneous conception, thrombophilia occurring in the early stages of pregnancy, which was further aggravated by cerebral venous thrombosis. Howe

Headaches in pregnancy are a common occurrence, and most differentials are benign but cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is a life-threatening secondary headache that is more common in pregnancy and postpartum. CVT is caused by an occlusion of the dural venous sinus and/or cerebral veins and presents with various non-specific presentations and has numerous causes and risk factors which make clinical diagnosis difficult. A woman in her late 30s was diagnosed with extensive CVT at 34 weeks gestation after reporting a persistent headache, visual disturbance and intermittent right-sided paraesthesia

Cerebral venous thrombosis in pregnancy in the first trimester is a very rare condition but should not be confused with the clinical presentation of other common conditions in pregnancy such as pre-eclampsia. Although it is rare and difficult to diagnose, it is potentially serious and can increase maternal mortality. Diagnosis by imaging tests such as MRI and early treatment with heparin reduces maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. We present the case of a 39-year-old pregnant woman at 8 weeks' gestation who presented with early onset of severe headache and vomiting; MRI with angiog

BACKGROUND: Intracranial venous thrombosis (ICVT) accounts for around 0.5% of all stroke cases. There have been no previously published studies of the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Edition (ICD-10) validation for the identification of ICVT admissions in adults.
OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to validate and quantify the performance of the ICD-10 coding system for identifying cases of ICVT in adults and to derive an estimate of incidence.
METHOD: Administrative data were collected for all patients admitted to a regional neurosciences centre over a 5-year period. We s

Cerebral Venous Thrombosis (CVT), also known as cortical venous, cerebral sinus, cerebral venous sinus, or dural sinus thrombosis, is an infrequent grave condition affecting pregnant females, resulting from clot formation in one of the many outflow tracts of the brain. Although pregnancy-associated stroke or CVT is uncommon, the risk of stroke is greatly increased above the low baseline rate in young patients during late pregnancy and, even more so, during the puerperium. Haemorrhagic infarction can occur in the acute stage of CVT. The article reports a case of CVT in puerperium in woman witho

Thrombosis of cerebral veins or thrombosis of cortical and deep veins that empty into the sinuses can cause serious neurological syndromes. Cerebral vein thrombosis is seen, especially between the ages of 20-35. The predisposing factors in 80% of patients can be determined. Pregnancy, postpartum period and spinal anaesthesia are among the predisposing factors. Diagnosis of the disease is difficult due to the variety of clinical signs and symptoms. Headache is the most common reason for admission to the hospital. Thromboembolic events in pregnancy are an important reason of maternal morbidity a

Childhood sinovenous thrombosis is rare, making it difficult to study; International Classification of Diseases, ninth revision (ICD-9), code searches across multiple hospitals would permit the identification of large numbers of children with sinovenous thrombosis. However, the accuracy of these codes for identifying childhood sinovenous thrombosis has not been established. We performed a retrospective search of admissions records for Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, Indiana, from January 1999 to June 2005 using ICD-9 codes 325 (cerebral sinovenous thrombosis, excluding nonpyogenic

Pregnancy increases the risk of cerebrovascular accidents to approximately 13 times the expected rate. Most of the cerebrovascular accidents are due to cerebral venous thrombosis. Headache, seizures and focal neurological deficits are some of the symptoms of cerebral venous thrombosis. Headache can also be due to postural puncture, pre eclampsia and eclampsia in the postpartum period. Neuroimaging with MRI with contrast helps in the diagnosis of cerebral venous thrombosis and giving a definite diagnosis, which aids in the treatment and prognosis. The cases presented in this report highlight th

Sudden unexpected death in many instances comes with stimulating or interesting findings, often in contrast to the history provided. Two cases of sudden death in pregnant females with central venous thrombosis are described, because of their rarity. The incidence, etiological factors, predisposing conditions and the ethical and legal questions arising from such deaths are discussed.

We report a 20 year-old, 28 week-pregnant woman, who developed superior sagittal sinus thrombosis, associated with a decreased free protein S level. Her father, who had been a stroke victim, had also significantly lower level of protein S. In very rare cases, a congenital or acquired protein S deficiency leads to cerebral venous thrombosis. The detection of such abnormalities has major practical consequences for the long-term management of patients to prevent further thrombotic episodes.

During a prospective study of cerebrovascular accidents we evaluated 64 cases of cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) in pregnancy and puerperium. CVT made up approximately half of the young strokes and 40% of strokes occurring in females. Majority of them were below 25 years of age, multipara women from rural areas who were delivered at home by untrained dais. While 79.6% cases occurred during first two weeks after delivery, the incidence of antepartum CVT was also higher at 7.8%. Majority of the patients had meningoencephalitic (70.32%) presentation. Others in the spectrum had either acute fulmi

A fatal case of cerebral venous thrombosis associated with protein C deficiency is reported. It occurred at six months of gestation in a 25 year old patient during her first pregnancy. She had generalized seizures. Computed axial tomography displayed cerebral haemorrhagic infarction, and the carotid angiograms signs of superior longitudinal sinus thrombosis. Before the patient's death on the seventh day after admission, protein C deficiency was discovered. The occurrence of thrombosis of the superior longitudinal sinus during pregnancy, as well as that of protein C deficiency in atypical cases
