Prevalence of vulvovaginal candidiasis among pregnant women in Africa: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is a yeast infection of the vulva, which is caused by Candida species and affects women worldwide. Pregnant women are more vulnerable to VVC due to certain risks. Moreover, their offspring are also exposed to the risk of preterm birth. In this context, ascertaining the burden of VVC is of paramount importance and this meta-analysis was conducted to estimate the occurrence of VVC among pregnant women in Africa. METHODOLOGY: Database search was carried out through PubMed, Scopus, Science-Direct, and Google Scholar from the date of inception until Dec

Advanced Solid Formulations For Vulvovaginal Candidiasis.

Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is an opportunistic and endogenous infection caused by a fungus of the Candida genus, which can cause pruritus, dysuria, vulvar edema, fissures and maceration of the vulva. The treatment of vaginal candidiasis is carried out mainly by antifungal agents of azole and polyene classes; however, fungal resistance cases have been often observed. For this reason, new therapeutic agents such as essential oils, probiotics and antimicrobial peptides are being investigated, which can be combined with conventional drugs. Local administration of antimicrobials has also been c

Guideline: Vulvovaginal candidosis (AWMF 015/072, level S2k).

Approximately 70-75% of women will have vulvovaginal candidosis (VVC) at least once in their lifetime. In premenopausal, pregnant, asymptomatic and healthy women and women with acute VVC, Candida albicans is the predominant species. The diagnosis of VVC should be based on clinical symptoms and microscopic detection of pseudohyphae. Symptoms alone do not allow reliable differentiation of the causes of vaginitis. In recurrent or complicated cases, diagnostics should involve fungal culture with species identification. Serological determination of antibody titres has no role in VVC. Before the ind

Evaluation of overtime phenotypic variation of yeasts in chronic vulvovaginal candidosis cases.

Chronic vulvovaginal candidosis results either from reinfection or from the ability of Candida spp. to persist in the vulva and/or vagina. Persistence is usually associated with increased antifungal (mainly azoles) resistance rates, which can explain treatment failure, and/or increased expression of virulence factors by Candida spp. The aim of this study was to assess the mechanisms leading to Candida spp persistence, by studying sequential isolates from women with chronic vulvovaginal candidosis, focusing on strains genotypes, azole resistance, and ability to form biofilms along the period of

Allergic vulvovaginitis: a systematic literature review.

PURPOSE: Despite the vaginal mucosa is able to respond to allergenic stimuli, vaginal allergic responses have been under investigated in clinical practice. Thus, we aimed to identify the most frequent etiological agents responsible for vulvovaginal allergies, the prevalent signs/symptoms, and the diagnostic tests applied in this clinical condition. METHODS: Literature search was performed on PubMed, Scopus, Scielo, Web of Science, and EMBASE. The study protocol was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42020167238). Studies were divided in two groups depending on allergen exposure route. Due to a signif

Vulvar pruritus-Causes, Diagnosis and Therapeutic Approach.

BACKGROUND: In Germany, 17-23% of the population suffers from chronic itching of the skin; in 5-10% of cases, the female genitalia are affected, specifically, the vulva. Vulvar pruritus is thus a common symptom that often markedly impairs the affected women's quality of life. METHODS: This review is based on pertinent publications that were retrieved by a selective search in MEDLINE/PubMed for articles on the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of vul- var pruritus. The search terms were (in German and English) "vulvärer Juckreiz," "pruritus vulvae," and "genital itch," alone and in combin

Forming diagnostic criteria for vulvar lichen planus.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Vulvar lichen planus is a debilitating skin condition usually complicated by delayed diagnosis due to its highly variable clinical appearance and inconsistent histopathological characteristics. This study aims to devise a clinical diagnostic tool for the disease and to correlate this with histopathology findings. METHODS: The retrospective single-centre chart review was conducted for patients presenting between January 2010 and December 2019. Clinical features were compared between 243 women with clinically suspected vulvar lichen planus with available histopathology, 5

Evaluation of vulvovaginitis in the adolescent patient.

Vulvovaginitis, referring to inflammation of the vulva and vagina, is a commonly reported concern among adolescents and young women presenting for gynecologic care. Symptoms of vulvovaginitis may include vaginal discharge, odor, itching, pain, dysuria, skin irritation, burning, and dyspareunia. Vulvovaginitis may result from infectious or non-infectious causes. Bacterial vaginosis, vulvovaginal candidiasis, and trichomoniasis represent the three most common infectious causes of vulvovaginitis in adolescents and young adults. Additionally, non-infectious causes such as the presence of a foreign

Comparison of p53 immunohistochemical staining in differentiated vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (dVIN) with that in inflammatory dermatoses and benign squamous lesions in the vulva.

AIMS: Differentiated vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (dVIN), the precursor lesion to human papillomavirus-independent vulvar squamous cell carcinoma (VSCC), can be difficult to distinguish from vulvar inflammatory dermatoses. Our goal was to determine if p53 could be a useful biomarker for dVIN, by characterizing p53 percentage, intensity and patterns of staining in dVIN and its histological mimics. METHODS AND RESULTS: We studied p53 immunohistochemical staining patterns in 16 dVIN cases and 46 vulvar non-neoplastic squamous lesions [12 lichen sclerosus (LS); seven lichen simplex chronicus;

Treating vaginitis with probiotics in non-pregnant females: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Vaginitis, also known as vulvovaginitis, is an inflammation of the vagina and vulva and a common disease in females. It is thought to be caused by vaginal dysbiosis and improved by probiotics. Bacterial vaginosis (BV) and vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) are the major types of vaginal infections. The present systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to clarify the efficacy of probiotics in the treatment of common vaginal infections in non-pregnant females. Literature on randomized controlled trials and two-armed prospective studies on any intervention with probiotics published until December 24t

Vulvovaginitis is a commonly encountered problem in general practice. It usually presents with irritation and vaginal discharge A thorough examination is essential in order not to miss the less common causes. Investigations may be needed to confirm the diagnosis Candidiasis and bacterial vaginosis are the most common causes. Antifungals and antibiotics are therefore used in management Not all causes are infective. Several skin disorders can affect the vulva Ongoing or recurrent symptoms require careful evaluation and further investigation

Vaginitis: Review on Drug Resistance.

Female genital tract infections have a high incidence among different age groups and represent an important impact on public health. Among them, vaginitis refers to inflammation of the vulva and/or vagina due to the presence of pathogens that cause trichomoniasis, bacterial vaginosis, and vulvovaginal candidiasis. Several discomforts are associated with these infections, as well as pregnancy complications and the facilitation of HIV transmission and acquisition. The increasing resistance of microorganisms to drugs used in therapy is remarkable, since women report the recurrence of these infect

Ultraviolet A/blue light-emitting diode therapy for vulvovaginal candidiasis: a case presentation.

Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is a frequent infection of the female genitourinary tract. It is considered the second most common genital infection in women, after bacterial vaginosis. VVC is treated with oral or topical azole derivatives. However, these agents may lead to adverse reactions and their chronic use might lead to resistance to antifungal agents. Given that the ultraviolet A/blue light-emitting diode (LED) is an electromagnetic radiation source with antimicrobial properties, it is hypothesized that this resource may be a non-drug alternative to the treatment of vulvovaginitis. A te
