BACKGROUND: Nausea and vomiting occur in more than 70% of pregnant women,1 and only 2% of these females progress into hyperemesis gravidarum (HG).2 HG is the persistent and excessive vomiting before the 22nd week of gestation. HG patients can develop life-threatening electrolyte disturbances or thromboembolism. Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a thromboembolism that blocks and stops blood flow to an artery in the lung. Both HG and PE increase morbidity and mortality in pregnant patients. HG patients developing PE are reported only in two patients with fatal outcomes in the literature. We report a ca

Postpartum venous thromboembolism (VTE), encompassing deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), is a critical complication occurring in the postpartum period. The pathogenesis involves a hypercoagulable state induced by pregnancy-related physiological changes, venous stasis from reduced mobility and pelvic compression during delivery, and endothelial injury. Postpartum VTE is a leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality, necessitating heightened clinical vigilance. Understanding the risk factors, implementing prophylactic measures, and ensuring timely intervention are para

Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a critical medical condition characterized by the obstruction of pulmonary arteries due to blood clots. The incidence of PE is heightened during pregnancy, primarily due to physiological changes such as altered blood flow and a hypercoagulable state. This case report details a pulmonary embolism diagnosed immediately following a preterm delivery, despite the patient receiving prophylactic treatment with low molecular weight heparin (LMWH). The prompt initiation of therapeutic dosing of LMWH was vital in mitigating potentially fatal outcomes. Accurate and timely diagn

BACKGROUND: Pharmacological prophylaxis during hospital admission can reduce the risk of acquired blood clots (venous thromboembolism) but may cause complications, such as bleeding. Using a risk assessment model to predict the risk of blood clots could facilitate selection of patients for prophylaxis and optimise the balance of benefits, risks and costs.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to identify validated risk assessment models and estimate their prognostic accuracy, evaluate the cost-effectiveness of different strategies for selecting hospitalised patients for prophylaxis, assess the feasibility of u

Objective and aim Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is a rare condition with significant morbidity and mortality risk involving the thrombosis of cerebral veins and dural sinuses. Its symptoms vary widely, ranging from headaches to focal neurological deficits, posing significant challenges to its diagnosis. Various contributing factors are involved in its etiology, some of which are gender specific. The clinical presentation varies widely and differs based on geographic distribution. This diversity makes CSVT challenging to diagnose, as it manifests in different ways and requires keen medical o

INTRODUCTION: Sinus of Valsalva aneurysm (SOVA), a rare cardiac malformation, is usually congenital and rarely acquired and most commonly occurring in the right coronary sinus. The clinical presentation of patients with SOVA varies. It is usually asymptomatic when it has not ruptured, and when it compresses neighboring structures or ruptures, it can lead to heart failure or shock, at which point urgent surgical intervention is usually required. Rupture of the sinus of Valsalva aneurysm (RSOVA) during pregnancy is really hard to come by, especially if the clinical presentations resemble that of

Approximately half of pregnant women in India are anemic, representing over 7.5 million women. Few studies have assessed the relationship between multiple micronutrient deficiencies and anemia during pregnancy or the trajectory of hemoglobin (Hb) during pregnancy in low-resource settings. We enrolled 200 pregnant women from the Maternal and Newborn Health (MNH) registry, a population-based pregnancy and birth registry in Eastern Maharashtra, India to address these gaps. The women provided capillary (finger-prick) and venous blood specimens at enrollment (<15 weeks), and a second capillary spec

BACKGROUND: Maternal infections caused by the ToRCH complex, comprising Toxoplasma gondii (T.gondii), Rubella Virus (RV), Cytomegalovirus (CMV), and Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV), are significant contributors to Bad Obstetric History (BOH). These infections can vertically transmit through the placental barrier, leading to complications in fetal development. This study investigates the histopathological changes induced by ToRCH pathogens in placental tissues and their association with post-obstetric complications in Pakistani women.
METHODOLOGY: A total of 83 women were enrolled in the study and

Grapefruit juice can alter oral drug pharmacokinetics by different mechanisms. Irreversible inactivation of intestinal cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A4 is produced by commercial grapefruit juice given as a single normal amount (e.g. 200-300 mL) or by whole fresh fruit segments. As a result, presystemic metabolism is reduced and oral drug bioavailability increased. Enhanced oral drug bioavailability can occur 24 hours after juice consumption. Inhibition of P-glycoprotein (P-gp) is a possible mechanism that increases oral drug bioavailability by reducing intestinal and/or hepatic efflux transport. Rece
