The incidence rate of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in pregnancy is currently on the increase. GDM is associated with short and long-term adverse outcomes for mothers, fetuses and newborns. The aim of the present study was to compare the incidence of adverse perinatal outcomes in women with and without GDM, in addition to comparing the morbidity and mortality rates of preterm infants born to women with and without GDM. A retrospective analysis of 640 preterm infants admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Qilu Hospital of Shandong University (Qingdao, China) between January 2019

PURPOSE: Sleep quality is an important indicator of individual quality of life, which not only affects people's mental health but is also closely related to the occurrence of many diseases. Sleep disorders associated with diabetes in pregnancy can greatly endanger the health of both mothers and babies, and their hazards are strongly associated with blood glucose levels. This study explored the quality of sleep and sleep disorders in pregnant women with diabetes.
METHODS: From June 2020 to July 2021, a total of 693 patients diagnosed with diabetes during pregnancy in Gansu Provincial Maternal

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the association between a history of recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA) and adverse outcomes in women with spontaneous conception.
METHODS: A search strategy from the inception to March 3, 2023 was run in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases. The odds ratio (OR), and the 95% confidence interval (CI) or point estimation were used as the evaluation indexes. Each outcome measure tested was assessed for heterogeneity using the Cochran Q test. Sensitivity analyses were performed to test the credibility of the meta-analysis resu

Babies born to severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus-2 (SARS-CoV-2)-infected mothers are at greater risk for perinatal morbidity and more likely to receive a neurodevelopmental diagnosis in the first year of life. However, the effect of maternal infection on placental function and neonatal outcomes varies depending upon the patient population. We set out to test our hypothesis that maternal SARS-CoV-2 infection in our underserved, socioeconomically disadvantaged, mostly unvaccinated, predominantly African American and Latina population in the Bronx, NY would have effects evident at bi

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (ED) are severe psychiatric disorders, commonly debuting early. Aberrances in the intrauterine environment and at birth have been associated with risk of ED. Here, we explore if, and at what effect size, a variety of such exposures associate with offspring ED, that is, anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), and eating disorder not otherwise specified (EDNOS).
METHODS: This population-based cohort study, conducted from September 2021 to August 2023, used Finnish national registries of all live births in 1996-2014 (N = 1,097,753). Cox proportional hazards mode

Maintaining a healthy weight during pregnancy is critical for both women's and children's health. Excessive gestational weight gain (GWG) can lead to complications such as gestational diabetes, hypertension and caesarean delivery. Insufficient GWG can cause fetal growth restriction and increase infant mortality risk. Additionally, postpartum weight retention raises risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes and other chronic diseases for both mother and child. This review seeks to identify current obstacles in weight management research during and after pregnancy and explore evidence-based strategies to

IMPORTANCE: Poor prepregnancy cardiovascular health (CVH) and adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs) are key risk factors for subsequent cardiovascular disease (CVD) in birthing adults. The postpartum visit offers an opportunity to promote CVH among at-risk individuals.
OBJECTIVE: To determine prevalence, predictors, and trends in self-reported CVH counseling during the postpartum visit.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Serial, cross-sectional analysis of data from 2016-2020 from the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS), a nationally representative, population-based survey. The p

PURPOSE: We utilized a population database to address the paucity of data around pregnancy outcomes in women with Down syndrome (DS).
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study using the Health Care Cost and Utilization Project-Nationwide Inpatient Sample Database over 11 years, from 2004 to 2014. A delivery cohort was created using ICD-9 codes. ICD-9 code 758.0 was used to extract the cases of maternal DS. Pregnant women with DS (study group) were matched based on age, race, income, and health insurance type to women without DS (control) at a ratio of 1:20.
RESULTS: There were a total of 9

BACKGROUND: Many of the adverse outcomes of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are linked to excessive fetal growth, which is strongly mediated by the adequacy of maternal glycemic management. The COVID-19 pandemic led to a rapid adoption of virtual care models. We aimed to compare glycemic management, fetal growth, and perinatal outcomes before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted between 2017 and 2020. Singleton pregnancies complicated by GDM were included in the study. The cohort was stratified into "before" and "during" COVID-19 subgroups,

During the last decades, gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) prevalence has been on the rise. While insulin remains the gold standard treatment for GDM, metformin use during pregnancy is controversial. This review aimed to comprehensively assess the available data on the efficacy and safety of metformin during pregnancy, both for the mother and the offspring. Metformin has been validated for maternal efficacy and safety, achieving comparable glycemic control with insulin. Additionally, it reduces maternal weight gain and possibly the occurrence of hypertensive disorders. During the early neona

Background Prenatal glucocorticoids are commonly used in pregnancies before 34 weeks of gestation in women at risk of preterm delivery; however, the effects of these drugs on late preterm infants (those born after the 34th week of pregnancy) are controversial. As a result, we aimed to investigate the effect of a single course of betamethasone (two doses of betamethasone every 24 hours) on the neonatal outcome of late preterm births. Methods We retrospectively assessed all spontaneous late preterm births (34-36+6 weeks of gestation) at a tertiary hospital in Iran over a period of two and a half

BACKGROUND: Craniofacial microsomia (CM) is characterized by changes in the first and second branchial arches. It is a clinical condition whose etiology is still uncertain, but studies have shown that genetic, nutritional, and environmental factors can result in disorders of blastogenesis of the branchial arches. This study evaluates gestational aspects, focusing on possible risk factors associated with CM.
METHODS: This is a case-control study conducted with patients monitored at a medical genetics service and compared to a control group of patients without evidence of malformations, born in

Background and objectives: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is known to be associated with pregnancy complications but there is limited evidence about the strength of these associations in recent clinical practice, especially after the introduction of strict guidelines for the management of pregnancies with GDM in a multidisciplinary team setting. The objectives of our study were to first compare the rates of complications in pregnancies with GDM with those that had pre-existing diabetes mellitus and those without diabetes; and second, to derive measures of effect size expressed as odds rat
