Determinants of childbearing intentions among pregnant women with a suspected fetal congenital heart disease.

BACKGROUND: The Saudi population is characterized by a high fertility rate, a conservative sociocultural context, and an ongoing societal and lifestyle transition. Yet, data regarding childbearing intentions and the associated factors is scarce. Furthermore, childbearing intention may be impacted by abnormal pregnancy events, such as the clinical suspicion or diagnosis of a fetal congenital disease and the negative experience that may result from it. OBJECTIVES: The present study explored childbearing intention and determined the sociodemographic and health-related factors discouraging from f

Demographics and deprivation in obstetric brachial plexus palsy: a retrospective cohort study.

The present study analyses the relationships between deprivation and obstetric brachial plexus palsy (OBPP). A retrospective observational study was conducted of infants with OBPP seen between 2008 and 2020 (n = 321). The index of multiple deprivation (IMD) was used to assign an IMD rank to patients based on birth postcode and the relationship with OBPP was analysed, including deprivation, gestational diabetes, age at referral and at first assessment. Quintile-based analysis demonstrated over-representation of patients from more deprived neighbourhoods (n = 109, 39%) living in the top 20% most

Outcomes in Maternal Graves' Disease: A Population-Based Mother-Infant Dyad Cohort Study.

Background: Graves' disease has been associated with adverse pregnancy, labor and delivery, and neonatal outcomes. Thyroid function levels, assessed during newborn screening (NBS), can serve as indicators of the adaptation in the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis. We utilized data from the national thyroid NBS program to investigate the characteristics of the mother-infant dyad of term infants born to mothers with past or active Graves' disease. Methods: The dataset of the Israeli NBS for thyroid function was linked with the electronic records of a tertiary medical center to generate a unifi

Disrupted Balance of the Oxidant-Antioxidant System in the Pathophysiology of Female Reproduction: Oxidative Stress and Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes.

The significance of oxidative stress in the pathophysiology of male reproductive processes has been closely studied in the last two decades. Recently, it has become clear that oxidative stress can lead to numerous pathological conditions during female reproductive processes as well, contributing to the development of endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome and various forms of infertility. During pregnancy, physiological generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) occurs in association with several developmental processes including oocyte maturation and implantation. An overproduction of ROS

Previous traumatic brain injury is associated with an increased odds for gestational diabetes: a nationwide register-based cohort study in finland.

AIMS: Despite recent findings that traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a possible risk factor for type 2 diabetes (DM2) and that a strong association exists between gestational diabetes (GDM) and the risk for the development of DM2, no previous studies have investigated the effects of TBI on the risk for the development of GDM. Therefore, this study aims to determine the possible association between a previous traumatic brain injury and later gestational diabetes. METHODS: In this retrospective register-based cohort study, data from the National Medical Birth Register were combined with data from

Contributing factors of birth asphyxia in Thailand: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Birth asphyxia is of significant concern because it impacts newborn health from low to severe levels. In Thailand, birth asphyxia remains a leading cause of delayed developmental health in children under 5 years old. The study aimed to determine the maternal, fetal and health service factors contributing to birth asphyxia. METHODS: A case-control design was conducted on a sample of 4256 intrapartum chart records. The samples were selected based on their Apgar scores in the first minute of life. A low Apgar score (≤ 7) was chosen for the case group (852) and a high Apgar score (> 7

Effects of the online and offline hybrid continuous group care on maternal and infant health: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The group care is a well-established maternal care model that has been widely used in many developed countries, but in China, it is confined to prenatal care services. In addition, affected by traditional birth culture, Chinese women tend to focus more on their fetuses and newborns but lack attention to their own intrapartum and postpartum care. The aim of this study was to construct and implement a prenatal, intrapartum, and the postpartum continuous group care model that combines online and offline service in Hainan Province, China, and to evaluate the effect on maternal women an

The impact of covid-19 pandemic on pregnancy outcome.

BACKGROUND: The acute respiratory disease caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19) has spread rapidly worldwide yet has not been eliminated. The infection is especially deadly in vulnerable populations. The current studies indicate that pregnant women are at greater risk of getting seriously ill. Even though fetuses protect against disease, the additional finding showed that the COVID-19 pandemic could increase fetal and maternal morbidities. In a situation where COVID-19 and new strains of the virus are still not controlled, scientists predicted that the world might experience another pandemic. C
