Tackling the dual burden of malnutrition in pregnancy - pregnancy after weight loss surgery.

The dual burden of malnutrition is characterised by the coexistence of undernutrition alongside overweight/obesity and diet-related noncommunicable diseases. It is a paradox which disproportionately affects women and is applicable to those who become pregnant after weight loss surgery. Obesity before and during pregnancy is associated with increased risk of adverse perinatal outcomes in both mother and child. Overall lifestyle interventions targeting weight loss in the preconception period have not proven effective, with people, and women in particular, increasingly seeking weight loss surgery

Child Survival Crisis Due to Maternal Undernourishment During the COVID Era.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused a global crisis, creating the most challenging times faced by any country. The pandemic created a situation that shocked the whole world. It led to a condition of fear, and the ones to take the major hit were the vulnerable groups: children, pregnant women, and the elderly, as well as those belonging to low socio-economic groups who lost their source of daily income. It increased the pressure on already burdened healthcare and information systems and led to a situation where the well-being of even children and pregnant women could not be

A False-Positive Case of Methylmalonic Aciduria by Tandem Mass Spectrometry Newborn Screening Dependent on Maternal Malnutrition in Pregnancy.

Methylmalonic Acidurias (MMAs) are a group of inborn errors of metabolism (IEMs), specifically of propionate catabolism characterized by gastrointestinal and neurometabolic manifestations resulting from a deficiency in the function of methylmalonyl-CoA mutase, methylmalonyl-CoA epimerase, and cobalamin metabolism. In Expanded Newborn Screening (NBS), increased levels of propionylcarnitine (C3) and/or of its ratios by MS/MS analysis of dried blood spots (DBS) samples are suggestive for either Propionic Acidemia or MMAs. C3 elevation is not considered a specific marker for these disorders, resul

Burden and determinants of malnutrition among pregnant women in Africa: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition in pregnancy remains unacceptably high across all regions of Africa though promising progresses have been made globally. Primary studies might not be sufficient to portrait a comprehensive picture of malnutrition during pregnancy and its main risk factors. Therefore, we intended to review the burden of malnutrition, for this specific review implies to protein energy malnutrition, during pregnancy in Africa to present its magnitude and determinant factors. METHODS: We did a systematic review of observational studies published from January 1/2008 to January 31/2018. The

Growth prediction of small for gestational age infants within the first weeks after birth.

Being born small for gestational age (SGA) in length is a sign of growth failure due to malnutrition in pregnancy or other serious disorders. In previous publications it was shown that SGA born neonates may experience a compensatory growth spurt (catch-up growth) in infancy and childhood (Olbertz et al. in press). The timing of this growth spurt, however, was not well described. We analyzed longitudinal data of 5,138 SGA infants and children, collected by licensed physicians in Germany and centrally stored in the Database Management System of CrescNet at the University of Leipzig. We confirm t

How maternal malnutrition affects linear growth and development in the offspring.

Maternal malnutrition is common in the developing world and has detrimental effects on both the mother and infant. Pre-pregnancy nutritional status and weight gain during pregnancy are positively related to fetal growth and development. Internationally, there is no agreement on the method of diagnosis or treatment of moderate or severe malnutrition during pregnancy. Establishing clear guidelines for diagnosis and treatment will be essential in elevating the problem. Possible anthropometric measurements used to detect and monitor maternal malnutrition include pre-pregnancy BMI, weight gain, and

Malnutrition in pregnancy following bariatric surgery: three clinical cases of fetal neural defects.

OBJECTIVE: Bariatric surgery results in decreased food intake and a variable degree of malabsorption. Without adequate supplementation, the most common complications of this surgery are nutritional disorders. Pregnancy following surgery for obesity is a particular condition requiring strict monitoring of nutrient intake necessary for fetal development and a favourable neonatal prognosis. PATIENTS: Malnutrition in pregnancy and congenital neural malformations are reported in three women who had previously undergone bariatric surgery (1, 5 and 18 years before pregnancy, respectively). Two patie

Sudden infant death syndrome requires genetic predisposition, some form of stress and marginal malnutrition.

Over the past 30 years or more, the problem of sudden, unexplained death in infants (SIDS) has made little headway. Many hypotheses have been offered but the basic cause remains elusive. The only successful prevention has been made by the supine sleeping posture. There is still, however, a hard core of unexplained incidents. There is evidence that certain stress factors are involved, and there is good evidence that the tragedy has a familial or genetic tendency. The third factor necessary for the event is inefficient oxidation in brain cells induced most commonly by marginal malnutrition in pr

Infant mortality and famine: a study in historical epidemiology in northern England.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether periodic variations in annual infant mortality were associated with malnutrition and the poor quality of the food supply available to the community. DESIGN: Retrospective study of historical epidemiology of infant mortality by time series analysis and family reconstitution of parish registers of burials and baptisms. SETTING: Penrith, Cumbria, England, 1557-1812. SUBJECTS: A total of 17,500 births during 1557-1812. RESULTS: This community in the Eden Valley, Cumbria, close to the Scottish borders, was living under marginal conditions with high mortality and lo

The effects of alcohol induced malnutrition in pregnancy on offspring brain and behavioral development.

Alcohol is known to have various deleterious effects in all animals including man. The present study was designed to establish whether the effects of moderate EtOH intake during pregnancy on offspring are due to toxic effects of the substance or to nutritional changes; whether effects are long lasting or limited in duration; and whether effects are due to the prenatal action of the substance or effects persisting into the postnatal period. The findings show that the effects obtained in our study are due to malnutrition engendered in the prenatal period and are of limited duration. Since much e
