Prenatal Origin of Childhood Overweight, Obesity and Insulin Resistance, with Special Emphasis on Maternal Diabetes, Excessive Weight, Nutrition and Hormone Imbalances.

Overweight in childhood, adolescence and adulthood is now a world-wide epidemic. A variety of preventive and therapeutic measures are being developed with partial success. Since the pioneering studies of D.J. Barker linking maternal famine in pregnancy to long-term undesirable effects on the offspring-the "metabolic syndrome" that stems from long-lasting epigenetic changes, it became evident that there are many undesirable events which affect in-utero fetal growth and development. They often persist postnatally, through childhood and adulthood. The purpose of this review is to discuss the pren

Increasing Birth Weight above 4,000 Grams Is Associated with Adverse Outcomes among Births without Diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the association of increasing birth weight above 4,000 grams and adverse obstetric outcomes and explore the influence of key maternal risk factors, including prepregnancy body mass index (BMI) and gestational weight gain (GWG), among births not complicated by diabetes. STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort study of singleton, non-anomalous, live births between 37 and 42 weeks' gestation in the United States between 2012 and 2021. Births complicated by diabetes or with birth weights less than 3,000 g were excluded. Births were stratified into fou

Is it possible to detect women at higher risk of intrapartum stillbirth? An area-based prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study is to perform an overview of intrapartum stillbirth (SB) at term, assessing risk factors, causes of death and quality of pregnancy care. METHODS: This is an area-based, prospective cohort study on pregnant women at ≥37 weeks from 2014 to 2021. We compared intrapartum SB' information to alive birth and to antepartum deaths of the same period. Results of logistic regression are reported as the Odds Ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (95% CI) and the P value. A descriptive analysis about the causes of death and quality of pregnancy care is performed. RESULT

Pregnancy conditions and complications associated with the development of varicose veins.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy is a known risk factor for developing varicose veins (VV). However, pregnancy is often considered a homogeneous entity and few studies have examined if specific characteristics and complications of pregnancy may influence VV formation. This study sought to identify which pregnancy-specific factors are associated with the development of VV. METHODS: All women who gave birth (live or still) between 1998 and 2020 within a multicenter health care system were identified retrospectively and followed through all hospital encounters (inpatient and outpatient). The primary outcom

Overweight, obesity and excessive weight gain in pregnancy as risk factors for adverse pregnancy outcomes: A narrative review.

The global prevalence of overweight and obesity in pregnancy is rising and this represents a significant challenge for the management of pregnancy and delivery. Women who have a pre-pregnancy body mass index greater than 25 kg m-2 are more likely than those with a body mass index in the ideal range (20-24.99 kg m-2 ) to have problems conceiving a child and are at greater risk of miscarriage and stillbirth. All pregnancy complications are more likely with overweight, obesity and excessive gestational weight gain, including those that pose a significant threat to the lives of mothers and babies.

The association between food insecurity and gestational weight gain: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Gestational weight gain has been one of the most important risk factors for adverse maternal, perinatal, and long-term outcomes. Our systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to incorporate the evidence regarding the association between gestational weight gain and food insecurity (FI). We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis on the possible association between FI and insufficient or excessive gestational weight gain by conducting a systematic search in PubMed, Scopus, ISI, and Google Scholar from January 1, 1990 until February 1, 2022. Odds Ratio (OR) was pooled using a random-effec

Excess pregnancy weight gain in latinas: Impact on infant's adiposity and growth hormones at birth.

Excess maternal weight gain during pregnancy has been associated with childhood overweight and obesity both in mothers with and without obesity. Latinx children are at higher risk for earlier obesity compared with other population groups. A cohort of 82 self-identified pregnant Latina women were recruited at the prenatal clinics of Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG) prior to delivery during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy in 2011 and 2012. Maternal pre-pregnancy weight and weight prior to delivery were collected by self-report to calculate maternal pre-pregnancy body

A randomized controlled trial of daily weighing in pregnancy to control gestational weight gain.

BACKGROUND: Excessive gestational weight gain is a modifiable risk factor for the development of obstetric and neonatal complications, and can have a lifelong impact on the health of both mother and offspring. The purpose of this study was to assess whether in addition to standardized medical advice regarding weight gain in pregnancy (including adherence to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) guidelines) (IOM (Institute of Medicine) and NRC (National Research Council, Weight Gain During Pregnancy: Re-examining the guidelines, 2009)), the addition of daily weighing would provide a low cost and simp

Development of a dietary screening questionnaire to predict excessive weight gain in pregnancy.

Excessive gestational weight gain (GWG) is a risk factor for several adverse pregnancy outcomes, including macrosomia. Diet is one of the few modifiable risk factors identified. However, most dietary assessment methods are impractical for use in maternal care. This study evaluated whether a short dietary screening questionnaire could be used as a predictor of excessive GWG in a cohort of Icelandic women. The dietary data were collected in gestational weeks 11-14, using a 40-item food frequency screening questionnaire. The dietary data were transformed into 13 predefined dietary risk factors fo

Change in active transportation and weight gain in pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy is characterised by large weight gain over a short period, and often a notable change in mode of transportation. This makes pregnancy suitable for examining the plausible, but in the scientific literature still unclear, association between active transportation and weight gain. We hypothesize that women continuing an active mode of transportation to work or school from pre- to early pregnancy will have a lower gestational weight gain (GWG) than those who change to a less active mode of transportation. METHODS: We analysed prospective data from the Norwegian Fit for Deliv

Factors Associated With Excessive Gestational Weight Gain: Review of Current Literature.

BACKGROUND: Excessive gestational weight gain (EGWG) places women at increased risk for complications during pregnancy and also increases the likelihood that they will remain overweight after pregnancy. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) has recommended weight gain guidelines based on pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI), but evidence-based strategies to achieve these goals are limited. OBJECTIVE: This review discusses factors associated with EGWG with the goal of identifying targets for future intervention. METHODS: A search was performed using the PubMed database to identify all English-langua

Can a health coaching intervention delivered during pregnancy help prevent excessive gestational weight gain?

This study evaluated: (1) the efficacy of a health coaching (HC) intervention designed to prevent excessive gestational weight gain (GWG); and (2) whether there were improved psychological, motivational, and behavioural outcomes for women in the HC intervention compared to a "usual care" control group. In this quasi-experimental study, 267 pregnant women ≤18 weeks gestation were recruited between August 2011 and June 2013 from two hospital antenatal clinics in Melbourne, Australia. Intervention women received four individual HC and two group HC/educational sessions informed by theories of beha

Diet or exercise, or both, for preventing excessive weight gain in pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: This is an update of a Cochrane review first published in 2012, Issue 4. Excessive weight gain during pregnancy is associated with poor maternal and neonatal outcomes including gestational diabetes, hypertension, caesarean section, macrosomia, and stillbirth. Diet or exercise interventions, or both, may reduce excessive gestational weight gain (GWG) and associated poor outcomes; however, evidence from the original review was inconclusive. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness of diet or exercise, or both, interventions for preventing excessive weight gain during pregnancy and
