Preventing obesity: a life cycle perspective.

Traditional approaches to treating overweight and obese adults by focusing on individual weight loss have not been effective in stemming the tide of obesity in the population. Recent research has identified critical factors that, as they accumulate and interact over an individual's life span, may put a person at risk for obesity. These factors include rapid weight gain in infancy and childhood, early puberty, and excessive weight gain in pregnancy. Based on this research, a life cycle perspective can be used to develop comprehensive interventions that address the multiple determinants of obesi

Factors influencing inadequate and excessive weight gain in pregnancy: Colorado, 2000-2002.

OBJECTIVES: To identify the biological, psychosocial, and behavioral characteristics that are associated with inadequate and/or excessive weight gain in pregnancy. METHODS: Univariate, bivariate, and multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted using data from Colorado's 2000-2002 Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS). Independent variables included biological risk factors (prepregnancy BMI, parity, preterm labor, maternal morbidity), psychosocial risk factors (pregnancy intention, WIC and Medicaid enrollment, area of residence, age, race/ethnicity, education, and stress

Pregnancy outcomes of First Nations women in relation to pregravid weight and pregnancy weight gain.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of pregravid weight and pregnancy weight gain on pregnancy outcomes in Cree women. METHODS: We reviewed maternal and infant outcomes of the first pregnancy in Cree women living in James Bay, Quebec, from 1994 to 2000. We examined data from women who had a full-term singleton birth and a maternal pregravid body mass index (BMI) > or = 18.5 kg/m2 and whose weight had been recorded in the first trimester and within one month prior to delivery. Weight in the first trimester was used to estimate pregravid BMI. RESULTS: Data were available for 603 women. At the b

The impact of pregnancy on eating behaviour and aspects of weight concern.

BACKGROUND: Excessive weight gain in pregnancy and retention of this weight gain is a well known problem. How women with a history of dietary restraint adjust to being pregnant, is of interest, as pregnancy epitomises many of the factors known to trigger overeating. OBJECTIVE: To examine the impact of pregnancy on eating behaviour and weight concern and the role of dietary restraint in mediating any changes. METHODS: Primigravid (n = 50) and non-pregnant nulliparous (n = 50) women completed a questionnaire to describe their profile characteristics, current health behaviours, eating behaviour

[Retrospective study of 33 cases of obstetric paralysis of the brachial plexus].

Thirty-three cases of obstetrical paralysis of the brachial plexus have been seen in 15 years in the gynaecological and obstetrical department of the University Hospital Pitié Salpêtrière. The authors, from studying these cases, work out the factors that tend to bring about this pathological condition. They are: multiparity, excessive weight gain in pregnancy, fetal excessive growth, prolonged second stage of labour, instrumental delivery and shoulder dystocia in cephalic presentations. In breech presentations it is mainly faulty performance of the manoeuvres that are needed to deliver the sho

[The relationship of maternal obesity, excessive weight gain in pregnancy and pre-eclampsia].

The records of 2,671 pregnancies were reviewed regarding maternal obesity, excessive weight gain in pregnancy and pre-eclampsia. Pre-eclampsia is significantly more frequent in maternal obesity. Correlation between excessive weight gain in pregnancy and pre-eclampsia is only found for the signs of edema and hypertension. Edema and excessive weight gain in pregnancy are related to each other, since edema frequently induces the excessive weight gain. Overall, maternal obesity perior to pregnancy is much more important in the development of pre-eclampsia than excessive weight gain during pregnanc
