Concentrations and ecological risk assessment of pesticide residues on soil biota in irrigated soil of Ziway, Ethiopia.

Pesticide residues in soil samples were analyzed by a gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer. To evaluate the ecological risks posed to significant soil organisms, including earthworms (Eisenia fetida), springtails (Folsomia candida), and nitrogen-mineralizing microorganisms, we employed toxicity exposure ratios and risk quotients to assess potential impacts. The rank order of pesticides in soil based on their concentration was p,p'-DDE (dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene) (M ± SD; 37.48 ± 16.76 μg kg-1) > propoxur (23.94 ± 10.71 μg kg-1) > propargite (22.09 ± 9.88 μg kg-1) > α-endosulfan (11.56 ±

Host and environmental factors associated with upper respiratory tract mycobiota in healthy individuals: a cross-sectional observational study.

BACKGROUND: Although the bacterial microbiome in the respiratory tract is well-characterised, the fungal microbiome or mycobiome remains underexplored. We aimed to characterise the upper respiratory tract mycobiome within the general population, assess its variation across niches and in relation to host and environmental factors, and evaluate its role as a source community for the fungal pathogens Candida auris (also called Candidozyma auris), Candida albicans, and Aspergillus fumigatus. METHODS: In this cross-sectional population-based observational study, we characterised paired nasopharyng

Development and preclinical evaluation of a copper-based acidic hydrogel for atopic dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) features impaired skin barrier, elevated cutaneous pH, and Staphylococcus aureus overcolonization. Restoring acidic skin pH while suppressing microbial overgrowth represents a promising non-steroidal strategy. To develop a copper-based acidic hydrogel and evaluate its properties, antimicrobial activity, efficacy, and safety. A hydrogel with 0.115% copper ions was prepared from basic copper carbonate, acetic acid (6% w/w), and xanthan gum, formulated at a final pH of ∼3.2, and characterized by rheology and stability testing. Antimicrobial activity was evaluated by a quant

Peptic perforation due to Candida spp.

The incidence of peptic perforation has not decreased despite the successful management of Helicobacter pylori (HP), suggesting other mechanisms are involved in the pathological process. Our findings support the relevance of Candida spp. in these types of perforations. These findings provide insight into the management of peptic perforations complicated by fungal infections and highlight the importance of routinely performing peritoneal culture and biopsies in these patients. We propose that Candida coinfection be considered an independent risk factor in the mortality of patients with peritoni

Molecular characterization of Candida boidinii GTS1 and its role in yeast proliferation in the phyllosphere.

Gts1 is a pleiotropic regulator for stress response and metabolism in yeast. Here, we identified and characterized CbGTS1 from the methylotrophic yeast Candida boidinii. Deletion of CbGTS1 reduced yeast proliferation on plant leaves and decreased tolerance to high-salt stress. These findings demonstrate that CbGts1 contributes to yeast adaptation and survival under challenging phyllosphere environments.

Upcycling rice husk ash into antiseptic-encapsulated ordered mesoporous silica materials for antimicrobial applications.

Rice husk ash (RHA), an abundant agricultural and industrial waste, was upcycled into functional mesostructured silica encapsulating cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), an FDA-approved antiseptic. Sodium silicate was efficiently extracted from RHA and leveraged as a biosourced silica precursor for the aqueous sol-gel synthesis of mesostructured hybrid silica at 30 °C. Micelles of CPC simultaneously acted as structure-directing agents and as integrated antimicrobial cargo, enabling the direct formation of ordered hybrids in one-pot. The condensation pH influenced the synthesis yield, the bonding co

An introduction to BASIC Guide: human biomonitoring and surveillance of chemical exposure in occupational settings.

Human biomonitoring (HBM) complements air and surface measurements by integrating exposure from all routes and sources, strengthening occupational exposure assessment and control. In occupational settings, HBM can quantify exposure during routine work and nonroutine activities, evaluate controls, investigate incidents (potential overexposures), and support medical surveillance. To use HBM to its full potential, occupational health and safety professionals (OHPs) should adopt harmonized biomonitoring approaches reflecting best practice. This short communication presents the BASIC Guide series (

The tale of two seas -The Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea regarding clinically important fungi.

Seawater and freshwater of rivers or lakes and their surrounding sand or soil have been shown to harbour bacteria and fungi. Among these microorganisms, the fungi of clinical interest can impact human health in various ways, posing an important risk to public health. In this article, we will present data of a 2-year survey of fungal contamination of seawater and sand on multiple beaches from Romania and Israel, and discuss the possible effects of the various climatic factors with respect to the mycobiota found in the two sites: the Black Sea versus the Mediterranean Sea. The samples were colle

Can Chlorhexidine Bathing Reduce Candidozyma auris Shedding?

This settle plate study demonstrated rapid Candidozyma auris shedding during nursing home caregiving activities, with an 80% reduction when residual chlorhexidine gluconate concentrations ≥156 µg/mL. Findings highlight high-contact care as key transmission points and provide novel evidence that chlorhexidine-based decolonization can effectively mitigate C. auris transmission risk in long-term care.

Genomic insights into adaptative traits of phyllosphere yeasts.

BACKGROUND: Yeasts are ubiquitous microorganisms thriving in diverse environments. They are prevalent members of the phyllosphere microbiome, but genomic studies of plant-associated yeasts remain limited. RESULTS: We established a taxonomically diverse yeast culture collection from flag leaves of field-grown wheat. This collection captured between 48-56% of the genus-level diversity detected by ITS amplicon sequencing conducted over two consecutive years, including the core members Aureobasidium, Dioszegia, Filobasidium, Papiliotrema, Sporobolomyces, and Vishniacozyma. De novo sequencing of 9

Grease trap waste, a renewable resource for biosynthesis of long-chain dicarboxylic acids using Candida tropicalis ATCC 20962.

Long-chain dicarboxylic acids (LCDAs) are valuable chemicals with a variety of industrial applications. However, since they are typically fossil-derived, there is a need for renewable feedstocks. This study investigated grease trap waste (GTW), an underutilised waste stream, for LCDA production using Candida tropicalis. Several experiments optimised glucose and GTW feed rates and pH, resulting in a final titre of 34.7 g/L LCDAs with a productivity of 0.42 g/(L·h) and a yield of 76 % after 140 h. Optimal conditions included a glucose feed rate of 0.38 g/(L·h), as lower feed rates resulted in gl

Candida Albicans and Escherichia Coli Superinfection in Emphysematous Pyelonephritis: A Case Report of A Challenging Presentation and Management.

Emphysematous pyelonephritis is a rare, life-threatening infection of the kidney characterized by necrosis and gas formation within the renal parenchyma, collecting system, and perinephric tissue. It commonly occurs in patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and in those with obstructive nephropathy. The most frequent causative pathogen is Escherichia coli, while Candida albicans is rarely implicated. This condition carries a high fatality rate, and early, aggressive medical interventions are recommended. We report a 66-year-old female with uncontrolled T2DM who present
