Performance evaluation of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fed diets supplemented with Lactobacillus plantarum, Bacillus subtilis and Candida infanticola.

Aquaculture is the fastest-growing agricultural activity globally, providing healthy food with comparatively low environmental impact. However, high stocking densities can generate excessive organic matter, causing stress and increasing pathogen susceptibility in fish. This study evaluated the effects of dietary supplementation with Candida infanticola UFSJ7A, Bacillus subtilis ATCC 19,659, and Lactobacillus plantarum UFSJP2 on Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) performance, intestinal morphology, in vitro antagonistic activity against fish pathogens, and pond water quality. Supplementation

Drug repurposing-inspired design of miconazole-based 1,2,3-triazoles as antichagasic agents.

Drug-repurposing strategies have been widely explored to accelerate the development of new treatments for Chagas disease, leveraging compounds with previously established safety profiles. Among these, azole antifungals have attracted attention due to their inhibitory activity against 14-α-lanosterol demethylase (CYP51), an enzyme also present in Trypanosoma cruzi and essential for its ergosterol biosynthesis. Inhibition of this pathway compromises parasite membrane integrity and function and several azoles, including posaconazole, ravuconazole, and miconazole, have demonstrated significant in

Antifungal activity of propolis against Candida spp.

Fungal infections caused by Candida species remain a major clinical and pharmacological challenge, ranging from superficial mucocutaneous disease to invasive infections associated with considerable morbidity. Vulvovaginal candidiasis is among the most common manifestations and is frequently recurrent. Increasing antifungal resistance has reduced the effectiveness of azoles and other standard therapies, highlighting the need for alternative or complementary treatment strategies. This systematic review aimed to synthesize recent evidence on the antifungal activity of propolis and its mechanisms

Profile of Invasive Fungal Infections in a Paediatric Haemato-Oncology Unit: A Five-Year Retrospective Cohort Study From a Tertiary Care Centre in South India.

BACKGROUND: Invasive fungal infections (IFIs) are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in paediatric haemato-oncology (PHO) patients. Empirical antifungal therapy in high-risk children must be informed by local epidemiological, species-level and antifungal-susceptibility data, yet contemporary Indian paediatric cohort data remain limited. OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical, microbiological, therapeutic and outcome profile of probable and proven IFI in a tertiary care South Indian PHO unit over five years, and to benchmark the findings against contemporary international literature. MET

Antifungal Activity Assessment of Postbiotic Mediators Derived From Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG and Lactobacillus reuteri Against Candida albicans.

The rise of antimicrobial resistance has increased interest in safe alternative therapeutic agents, including postbiotic mediators (PMs), which are sterile, cell-free, filter-sterilized preparations derived from probiotics. This study investigated the antifungal and antibiofilm activity of PMs derived from Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) and Lactobacillus reuteri (LR) against Candida albicans, an opportunistic pathogen implicated in oral infections. PMs were prepared from LGG and LR cultures. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) against C. albi

Association of quantitative sputum Candida load with respiratory dysbiosis and airway inflammation in suspected invasive pulmonary candidiasis.

UNLABELLED: The clinical significance of Candida species isolation from sputum remains ambiguous due to the colonization-infection dilemma. Integrating quantitative culture with microbiome profiling may clarify its role, yet systematic evidence is scarce. In this exploratory study (June 2023-June 2026), we enrolled 140 hospitalized patients suspected of invasive pulmonary candidiasis (IPC) and stratified them into possible IPC (n = 36), probable IPC (n = 71), and negative control (n = 33) groups based on clinical criteria. All underwent quantitative fungal culture of sputum and metagenomic nex

Investigation of suspected Candidozyma auris outbreaks in Malaysia using integrated genomic, clinical and antifungal susceptibility analyses (Investigation of Candidozyma auris outbreaks in Malaysia).

Candidozyma auris (formerly Candida auris) is an emerging multidrug-resistant fungus with limited genomic epidemiological data from Malaysia. This study investigated the genomic epidemiology, clinical characteristics and antifungal susceptibility of C. auris outbreak isolates using an integrated whole-genome sequencing (WGS) approach. Eleven clinical C. auris isolates from five healthcare facilities across three Malaysian states were analysed alongside clinical and epidemiological data. Antifungal susceptibility testing was performed for azoles, echinocandins, amphotericin B, flucytosine, and

A gene network regulating echinocandin heteroresistance in Candida glabrata.

While pathogenic fungi can acquire resistance to the current arsenal of antifungals through genetic mutations, heteroresistance has emerged as an important new cause of therapeutic failures. Heteroresistance is generally thought to arise in small subpopulations that display phenotypic resistance to antifungals without genetic mutations. This study blurs that line by showing gain-of-resistance (GOR) mutations in FKS2, which encodes a target of echinocandins and fungerps, causing broad heteroresistance in Candida glabrata. Identical gain-of-resistance mutations in FKS1, a paralog of FKS2, caused

ER stress selects for Candida auris survivors with acquired fluconazole resistance and caspofungin tolerance.

Exposure to endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress can drive the emergence of antifungal resistance in pathogenic fungi, but the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we show that treatment of Candida auris B12037 (clade 3) with the ER stressor tunicamycin selects for survivors with acquired resistance to fluconazole and, in a subset, tolerance to caspofungin. Pharmacological inhibition revealed that caspofungin tolerance, but not fluconazole resistance, requires the Hsp90-calcineurin axis. RNA-seq analysis of the parental strain exposed to tunicamycin uncovered a coordinated stress

Eco-phenotypic characterization of Candida palmioleophila from poultry litter and marine environments: implications for One Health.

Candida palmioleophila is an emerging opportunistic yeast frequently misidentified within the Meyerozyma guilliermondii complex, potentially obscuring its clinical and ecological relevance. Although its clinical significance is increasingly recognized, the phenotypic characteristics of environmental isolates remain poorly explored. This study evaluated the eco-phenotypic profiles of 14 C. palmioleophila isolates recovered from two anthropogenically influenced environmental sources: poultry litter (n = 6) and urbanized coastal environments (n = 8). Antifungal susceptibility testing revealed hig

Oxidative stress-responsive cell wall remodeling depends on phosphate in Candida albicans.

The growing number of patients susceptible to invasive Candida albicans infections has intensified the need for effective antifungal targets in pathways essential for fungal growth and pathogenesis. Among these pathways, phosphate homeostasis has emerged as a significant determinant of virulence, yet how phosphate availability shapes cell wall structure in response to host-derived oxidative stress remains unclear. During commensal growth, C. albicans cells typically enjoy phosphate repletion and a neutral redox environment. Transitioning to invade host tissues, they simultaneously experience p

Molecular Identification and Enzymatic Characterization of Fungi Isolated During Beef Aging.

Dry-aged beef is valued for its distinctive flavor and tenderness, but the fungal communities associated with the product and its aging environments remain insufficiently characterized. This study characterized the culturable fungal community of dry- and wet-aged beef from Albera and Bruna dels Pirineus cattle, as well as the aging chambers where the beef was produced, and assessed the proteolytic and lipolytic potential of the isolated fungi. Meat samples and chamber air were analyzed using culturomics and ITS sequencing. Among 291 fungal isolates, yeasts predominated in meat samples, with Ca

Corticosteroids drive oral candidiasis by impairing type-17 immunity without inducing interferon-gammopathy.

Oral candidiasis arises from either genetic immune defects or iatrogenic immune suppression, most commonly due to corticosteroid therapy. Although the cortisone acetate mouse model is widely used to study corticosteroid-associated oral candidiasis, the underlying mechanisms of susceptibility remain poorly defined. Here, we show that corticosteroid-induced susceptibility to oral candidiasis is driven primarily by impairment of type-17 immunity. In contrast, interferon-gammopathy, another immune state known to promote oral candidiasis, does not contribute to disease in the cortisone model. Moreo

Clinical Practice Recommendations for the Treatment of Candida auris Infection in Korea.

Candida auris is an emerging multidrug-resistant fungal pathogen associated with invasive infections and high mortality. In Korea, C. auris infections have historically been caused predominantly by Clade II isolates; however, recent reports of invasive infections due to Clade I indicate an evolving epidemiology with potential implications for antifungal resistance and treatment strategies. To provide practical guidance for clinicians, we developed evidence-based recommendations for the management of C. auris infections in Korea through review of current international guidelines and available e
