Herpes Gestationis (HG) is an autoimmune disorder that rarely complicates pregnancy. Its pathogenesis has not been clarified yet, as it derives from a complex interplay between immunologic, genetic, and hormonal factors. We present a case of HG occurring in a surrogate mother whose pregnancy was achieved via egg donation and in vitro fertilisation (IVF). The disease appeared at 26 weeks and 6 days of gestation and subsequently worsened despite the administration of oral and topic corticosteroids. A healthy baby was delivered at 35 weeks and 2 days of gestation by elective cesarean section and

BACKGROUND: Pemphigoid gestationis (PG), also known as herpes gestationis, is an uncommon autoimmune blistering disease that almost always occurs in the third trimester of pregnancy. The sudden emergence of the disease, its clinical appearance and the course create great stress on the pregnant woman and the fetus. The disease has been associated with premature delivery and small-for-gestational-age infants. Corticosteroids remain the mainstay of therapy.
CASE: A pregnant woman presented with a diffuse blistering and intensely pruritic urticarial plaques that occurred periumbilically and sprea

BACKGROUND: Pemphigoid gestationis (PG), also known as herpes gestationis, is a rare autoantibody-mediated bullous disease, usually associated with pregnancy and the postpartum period. However, infiltrating cells have recently been suggested to also contribute to the pathogenesis of cutaneous lesions.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the immunophenotype of T cells infiltrating the PG lesional skin and their prevalent cutaneous cytokine expression, as well as the presence and distribution of mast cells, eosinophils and neutrophils. Methods We performed an immunohistochemical study with a large panel of

Pemphigoid gestationis (PG) or herpes gestationis is a rare autoimmune subepidermal blistering disorder associated with pregnancy. The condition typically develops during the second or third trimester of pregnancy, but has been rarely reported in the first trimester and postpartum period. Here, we report a case of PG that presented for the first time in the postpartum period, associated with a low birth weight baby.

INTRODUCTION: Supporting individuals as they disclose their HIV serostatus may lead to a variety of individual and public health benefits. However, many women living with HIV are hesitant to disclose their HIV status due to fear of negative outcomes such as violence, abandonment, relationship dissolution and stigma.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of studies evaluating interventions to facilitate safer disclosure of HIV status for women living with HIV who experience or fear violence. Articles, conference abstracts and programme reports were included if they reported post-interventi

Complement is one of the most important mechanisms of natural resistance preventing infections in humans and animals. It is actively involved in the pathogenesis of several diseases, including skin diseases, characterized by the presence of autoantibodies, foreign microorganisms, altered tissue cells, and the presence of mannan. Complement is intended to kill invading microorganisms but it can also destroy the organism's own damaged or altered cells. It is characterized by vigorous activity and is also potentially harmful for the host if triggered in its own body. This review discusses the sig

The specific dermatoses of pregnancy represent a heterogeneous group of pruritic skin diseases that have been recently reclassified and include pemphigoid (herpes) gestationis, polymorphic eruption of pregnancy (syn. pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy), intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy, and atopic eruption of pregnancy. They are associated with severe pruritus that should never be neglected in pregnancy but always lead to an exact work-up of the patient. Clinical characteristics, in particular timing of onset, morphology and localization of skin lesions are crucial for d

Pemphigoid gestationis (PG) is a rare autoimmune bullous dermatosis associated with pregnancy. Its previous designation, herpes gestationis, is obsolete. PG is characterized by a subepidermic separation induced by the presence of peripheral blood autoantibodies against two hemidesmosomal antigens: BPAG1 and BPAG2. Clinical diagnosis is confirmed by histology and positive cutaneous immunofluorescence tests. The most discriminant examination for other pruritic dermatoses of pregnancy is the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (Elisa) NC16A BP 180. First-line treatment is local corticosteroid thera

Nongenital herpes simplex virus type 1 is a common infection usually transmitted during childhood via nonsexual contact. Most of these infections involve the oral mucosa or lips (herpes labialis). The diagnosis of an infection with herpes simplex virus type 1 is usually made by the appearance of the lesions (grouped vesicles or ulcers on an erythematous base) and patient history. However, if uncertain, the diagnosis of herpes labialis can be made by viral culture, polymerase chain reaction, serology, direct fluorescent antibody testing, or Tzanck test. Other nonoral herpes simplex virus type 1

INTRODUCTION: Pemphigoid gestationis, also known as herpes gestationis, is a rare autoimmune blistering disease associated with pregnancy. It usually occurs during the second or third trimester, but it may be present at any stage of pregnancy or the puerperium. The clinical, histologic, and immunopathological features of pemphigoid gestationis are similar to those of the pemphigoid group of disorders.
METHODS: We hereby report seven patients who were diagnosed with pemphigoid gestationis and followed at the Autoimmune Blistering Disease Clinic in the Department of Dermatology of the Universit

Pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy (PUPPP) are among the most common pruritic dermatoses observed in pregnant women. PUPPP appears most frequently in the third trimester, in primigravidas, and in multiple gestation pregnancies. The eruption of changes occurs initially on the abdomen and extends over the thighs, legs, back, buttocks, arms, and breasts. Skin changes typical for PUPPP are erythematous, urticarial plaques, and papules. Rash regression is usually observed within 6 weeks postpartum. Immunologic mechanisms, hormonal abnormalities, and abdominal skin distension have

Herpes gestationis is a rarely seen autoimmune vesiculobullous and pruritic dermatosis of pregnancy. Neonatal morbidity associated with maternal herpes gestationis is controversial. The authors report the first case of neonatal convulsion with abnormal electroencephalography findings and transient vesicular eruption due to maternal herpes gestationis.

BACKGROUND: Herpes gestationis (HG) is a rare, autoimmune, bullous disease that occurs during the second or third trimester and usually resolves over weeks or months after delivery. Neonates with HG are rare (estimated at 1 per 100,000 cases). Although anti-180-kDa bullous pemphigoid (BP180) autoantibody and transfer of this autoantibody are known as the cause, to our knowledge, no coordinated analysis of clinical symptoms and anti-BP180 antibody enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay titers has been reported in a mother and neonate with HG.
OBSERVATIONS: We describe a 33-year-old woman with HG an

Herpes gestationis, coined by Milton in 1872, or gestational pemphigoid is the most clearly characterized dermatosis of pregnancy. It is a rare vesiculo-bullous eruption that develops during the last trimester or even postpartum and creates severe pruritus. Its etiology is unknown, but it is considered as an autoimmune-mediated dermatosis closely related to the pemphigoid group. Herpes gestationis is associated with a positive C3 deposition along the base of the epidermis in salt-split skin, with increased frequency of HLA-DR3 and also the combination DR3 and DR4. It has a high risk of prematu
