[A case of Candida meningitis in a patient with CARD9 deficiency: an autopsy report].

Here we present the case of a 23-year-old female with a history of onychomycosis and oral thrush since childhood. She presented with a gradual onset of headache, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis on admission revealed an elevated mononuclear cell count. Hydrocephalus was observed on brain MRI. Candida albicans (C. albicans) was detected in the CSF, and antifungal treatment was initiated to diagnose of Candida meningitis. Due to an insufficient therapeutic response, intraventricular administration of liposomal amphotericin B initiated; however, the lesions persisted. Subsequently, the pati

Multiple brain abscesses in a neonate: a rare case report along with review of literature.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Brain abscess (BA) is a pyogenic infection of the brain parenchyma caused by various organisms. Multiple BAs are uncommon in neonates, and Candida albicans as a causative agent is very rare. If left untreated, BAs are invariably fatal. Early diagnosis, prompt surgical intervention, simultaneous eradication of the primary source, and high-dose intravenous antibiotics decrease the incidence of morbidity and mortality. CASE PRESENTATION: A 20-day-old newborn, delivered normally at term with a full APGAR score, presented with a 5-day history of fever, decreased activi

Candidaemia and Central Line-Associated Candidaemia in a Network of Indian ICUs: Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Candidaemia is a potentially life-threatening emergency in the intensive care units (ICUs). Surveillance using common protocols in a large network of hospitals would give meaningful estimates of the burden of candidaemia and central line associated candidaemia in low resource settings. We undertook this study to understand the burden and epidemiology of candidaemia in multiple ICUs of India, leveraging the previously established healthcare-associated infections (HAI) surveillance network. Our aim was also to assess the impact that the pandemic of COVID-19 had on the

Candidemia Following Severe COVID-19 in Hospitalised and Critical Ill Patients: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

RATIONALE: The epidemiology and clinical impact of COVID-19-associated candidemia (CAC) remained uncertain, leaving gaps in understanding its prevalence, risk factors and outcomes. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted by searching PubMed, Embase and Scopus for reports of CAC prevalence, risk factors and clinical outcomes up to June 18, 2024. The generalised linear mixed model was employed to determine the prevalence and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The risk factors and clinical outcomes were compared between patients with and without CAC using the inverse variance

Invasive Fungal Infections in Immunocompromised Conditions: Emphasis on COVID-19.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused death of 6 million lives globally, primarily from respiratory failure, but also a significant number from invasive fungal co-infections in these patients, owing to the immune dysfunction in hospitalized patients. Such complications occurred more often in critically ill, hospitalized patients particularly those admitted in intensive care units and were reported as the major reason associated with a high mortality rate worldwide. Fungal pathogens most commonly associated with COVID-19 patients comprise members of the Mucorales (such as Rhizopus, Mucor, and Lichtheimi

Invasive fungal infections in patients with acute leukemia: A retrospective cohort study at a tertiary-care hospital.

Invasive fungal infection (IFI) is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in acute leukemia patients. In the past few decades, the incidence of IFI has dramatically increased. Nevertheless, the management of IFI has become more complicated owing to changes in the epidemiology of fungal diseases and therapeutic regimens. Therefore, it is important to establish an appropriate strategy for centers that provide the diagnosis and treatment of acute leukemia patients based on scientific data and with available resources. In this study we investigated the incidence of IFI, pathogens, the use o

Improving antifungal lipid-based drug delivery against Candida: a review.

INTRODUCTION: Fungal infections, particularly those caused by Candida spp. have increased in recent years. A primary contributor to this surge was the COVID-19 pandemic, where many hospitalized patients had secondary fungal infections. Additionally, the emergence of resistant and multi-resistant fungal strains has become increasingly problematic due to the limited therapeutic options available in antifungal treatments. AREAS COVERED: This review presents a comprehensive analysis of recent studies focused on the development and characterization of lipid-based nanosystems as an emerging and pro
